US Open Predictions 2022: SportsTips’ Top Tennis Picks For Women’s Quarterfinals
Tue 6th September 2022

It’s the final eight here at the US Open, and on the women’s side of the draw we still have two Americans left, Gauff and Pegula. There is only one unseeded player standing, and that is Australian, Tomljanović. The world number one, Świątek, has also successfully made it through to the quarterfinals.

With so much to play for, who will rise to the challenge, and who will crack under the pressure? All four matchups are set to be a cracker and you don’t want to miss this, as a spot in the final four is up for grabs.

Enjoy our free tennis picks and predictions for each round at the US Open for the 2022 season.

Ons Jabeur (5) vs Ajla Tomljanović

The fifth seed, Ons Jabeur, will take on unseeded Australian, Ajla Tomljanović, in the quarterfinals at the US Open. Jabeur has been playing very well so far at the Grand Slam, and she has only dropped one set. This will be the first time Tomljanović will face a seeded player, but she did take out Williams in the third round.

Aleksandar Ricliev

The Tunisian tennis star has been one of the brightest spots in the world’s tennis. The results this year have been outstanding. She started the year by winning the Madrid WTA, finishing 2nd in the Rome WTA, and losing to Swiatek. She also made the final of the Berlin WTA. She was winning by 1 set to 0 but had to forfeit the game due to injury. At Wimbledon, she reached another final, which she lost to Rybakina. In the US open so far, she has lost only 1 set in the tournament to Shelby Rogers, who was brilliant on the day. Jabeur comes into this match full of confidence and will look to continue her incredible year.

After beating Serena Williams in a match full of emotions, I thought the adrenaline drop would be more significant, but Alja Tomiljanovic played amazingly versus Samsonova. She won the first set in a tiebreak (10-8), and in the process of winning that hard battle, she completely obliterated Samsonova in the second set by 6-1, in just half an hour. However, I think her story ends here. She lost in the quarterfinals in Wimbledon against Kvitova, and I think getting this far in the tournament is a decent result for her. I believe this will be a good battle, but I go with Jabeur winning the match and moving forward.

Aleksandar’s US Open Pick:

Match Winner – Jabeur (-200)

Ons Jabeur has made a whole continent proud with her achievements in tennis throughout the past couple of seasons. She became the first African to win a WTA title in 2021 and she was the first African to reach a Grand Slam final following her biggest achievement in her career so far at Wimbledon this year. The Tunisian has been playing quite conservatively in New York after difficulties in her preparation for the tournament combined with some tough losses in Toronto, San Jose, and Cincinnati. Even though she topped her best result at the US Open, she seems to be way out of rhythm at the moment.

On the other hand, Ajla Tomljanovic might have just picked up a fantastic momentum after her win over Serena Williams in the third round. The 29-year-old has officially retired the 23-time Grand Slam champion from tennis and this has been a special moment for her. She made sure to avoid being a one-day wonder and fought back to win the opening set after conceding eight set points against Ludmila Samsonova in the following round. Tomljanovic is typically struggling against Jabeur, but I sense that this might be her time to shine and she won’t miss it. Keeping in mind that she tends to play well in the first sets against top 10 players, I will confidently pick Tomljanovic as the one who will have the advantage early on in the quarterfinal.

Looking to put the heartbreak of losing out in the Wimbledon final behind her, Ons Jabeur has set about her business in the best possible way by reaching the quarterfinals of this year’s US Open by only dropping one set so far in her four wins. Understandably, the Tunisian has struggled for a little bit of form since her loss in the Wimbledon final, but looks back to her best here, with her variety causing nightmares for her opponents. Here she faces Alja Tomljanovic who is arguably playing the very best tennis of her career.

Tomljanovic ranked at 46 in the world is the only unseeded player left in the draw. She has had a fantastic tournament showcasing remarkable levels of composure and maturity to knock out Serena Williams in front of a raucous and passionate home crowd. Even more impressively, she backed that performance up with a win over Liudmila Samsonova dispatching the Russian in straight sets. Despite beating Williams, this is her toughest test of the tournament so far and Tomljanovic knows she will have to play the match of a lifetime if she is to overturn a 2-0 head to head record against the Tunisian.

Jack’s US Open Pick:

Coco Gauff (12) vs Caroline Garcia (17)

Young Coco Gauff has made it to her first US Open quarterfinal, and she will take on the 17th seed, Caroline Garcia, for a spot in the final four. The American has been clinical throughout the tournament, and she is yet to drop a set. The same can be said for Garcia, and the closest set she has played ended at 6-4.

Aleksandar Ricliev

Cori Gauff is slowly but surely coming strong on the tennis scene as the next superstar. After Serena Williams lost to Alja Tomiljanovic, Cori Gauff is the fan favorite. The match versus the impressive Zhang was great to watch, with Gauff ending up victorious, 2-0 in sets. She is yet to lose a set in this tournament and continues to impress the audience with her performances. Can she continue living the fairy tale and capture the trophy in her home country, which will certainly mean a lot? Gauff was the betting favorite and won both matches she played against Garcia. In Doha, it was an easy 2-0 win, and in the Indian Wells ATP last year, a hard-fought 2-1 win.

Caroline Garcia is in great form! She is coming to the US Open having won the Warsaw WTA and the Cincinnati WTA. In this stretch since the middle of July, she has lost only one out of 18 matches. An impressive record indeed. In the US Open, she has been completely dominating. She hasn’t lost a single set yet and hasn’t played a match for over one and a half hours. I am not sure if there is a good time to face the fiery Caroline Garcia, but in this form – she is undoubtedly one of the most challenging opponents you can draw. I think this match has all the elements to be one for the ages. Excellent support of the fans, with outstanding performances by both players. I am picking it to go over the games point bracket

Aleksandar’s US Open Pick:

Total Games – Over 21.5 (-125)

This might be Coco Gauff’s biggest opportunity to shine under the spotlight. The 18-year-old American has been part of the WTA Tour for four years already as she paved her way into the top 10 for the first time in her career. She became the youngest home-side tennis player to reach the quarterfinals at the US Open since Melanie Oudin in 2008. Gauff has been incredible in her matches in Flushing Meadows, but Shuai Zhang almost drew some blood in the fourth round. The American is certainly a hidden favorite this year, but she will need to defeat one of the players in top form at the moment.

Caroline Garcia is on a 12-game winning streak after overcoming the competition in Cincinnati for her third WTA 1000 title. She made her way through the top 20 and a win here would put her back in the top 10, giving us glimpses of her performance in 2018 when she was World No.4. Garcia has been devastating to her opponents at the US Open as she dismantled players like Kalinskaya, Andreescu, and Riske. Even though Gauff will be supported by a full Arthur Ashe Stadium, I personally believe that she will fall victim to the high expectations as Garcia will continue chasing her first Grand Slam title.

Denis’ US Open Pick:

Set Betting – Garcia 2-0 (+165)

I, like many, were too hasty in writing off Caroline Garcia. The Frenchwoman who is now 28 is playing the best tennis of her career and the confidence issues that have plagued her career seem to have departed. Garcia has always had a great game. Her forehand is huge and alongside Iga Swiatek is one of the best shots in the women’s game. Since losing in the second round of Wimbledon, Garcia has been playing some wonderful tennis and has lost just three matches, she has picked up titles in Warsaw and Cincinnati, a tournament she had to qualify for! Currently twelve matches unbeaten, she will be looking to make it thirteen wins on the spin with a victory over Coco Gauff.

Coco Gauff has reached her first ever US Open quarterfinal, and alongside Jessica Pegula is one of two Americans left in the draw. Gauff is a sure fire major winner in waiting and a likely future world number one, and there is a good chance she can move significantly towards those goals with a victory here. Gauff has had a breakthrough year, reaching her first major final at the French Open earlier in the season. She knows what it takes to go deep in a slam and there will be no fear when she takes the court against Garcia. Gauff is yet to drop a set at this year’s tournament and holds a 2-0 head to head lead over Garcia. I expect that to read 3-0 once this match is over.

Match Winner – Gauff (+105)

Karolína Plíšková (22) vs Aryna Sabalenka (6)

The 22nd seed, Karolína Plíšková, will look to advance to the final four at the US Open, but she will have to defeat the sixth seed, Aryna Sabalenka, in order to do so. Plíšková has been out on court a lot so far at the US Open, as she has only played one match that has gone two sets. Sabalenka came back from a set down against Collins in the previous round to advance to the quarterfinals.

Aleksandar Ricliev

Karolina Pliskova has had a disappointing season. She lost in the first round in Madrid and Rome WTA and the second round at Roland Garros and Wimbledon. In this tournament, her performances have been far from perfect. She played a tie break in the third set against Linette in the first round to squeeze through the next match. She also played three sets versus Bencic and another Beloruisan – Azarenka. Pliskova has had a lot of unforced errors in every match so far, and that will have to change in this one if she hopes to continue competing in this tournament.

I have been impressed by Aryna Sabalenka in this tournament. She won the first round easily against Harrison. In the second round, she was surprised by the aggressive Kanepi and lost the first set, but she had the mental strength to come back and win the match by playing some great tennis. Her third round was against Burel, who was no match and lost 6-2, 6-0. In the Round of 16, she played against Collins, who had the support of the home crowd. It was a great battle, with Sabalenka ending up victorious. I believe Sabalenka has looked a lot better than Pliskova in this tournament, so I will pick her to win this matchup.

Match Winner – Sabalenka (-150)

Karolina Pliskova has been struggling to find her rhythm in recent years as she has slowly but surely dropped out of the top 20. Back in 2017, she was a world No.1, but the Czech was not able to keep high consistency levels as she was immediately eaten by the fierce competition. Later on, in 2021, she made a return to the top 3, but in the beginning of 2022, Pliskova suffered an unpleasant hand injury that forced her to withdraw from the Australian Open and to start off the season with a win in April. She had a decent North American swing in August as she reached the semifinals in Toronto. Defeating Bouzkova, Bencic, and Azarenka will certainly give her quite enough confidence in the upcoming meeting.

Aryna Sabalenka, however, has also been struggling in the beginning of the season. The Belarusian has had huge difficulties with her double faults which happened to go to 20 at a certain point this year. She managed to deal with that issue, but she hasn’t done anything special in 2022 yet. Sabalenka reached two Finals which kept her chances to retain her spot in the top 10. However, she relies much on her first serve, as her playing style as a baseliner has several drawbacks. That’s why I would rather pick Pliskova as a winner in their Quarter-Final meeting.

Denis’ US Open Pick:

Match Winner – Pliskova (+120)

A battle of the huge hitters awaits as Karolina Pliskova and Aryna Sabalenka meet in what is bound to be a bruising quarterfinal matchup. Both are looking to win their first ever singles Grand Slam and know they are desperately close to achieving something special. I find both of these players incredibly fascinating yet sometimes frustrating to watch. Both are amongst the most talented players in the game, but more often than not their inconsistencies and failure to adapt to other options when things aren’t going their way are the things that let them down. Pliskova has endured a miserable 2022 and finds herself all the way at 22 in the world. Although a former world number one, Pliskova entered this year’s US Open flying hugely under the radar. Pliskova has shown signs of life recently and reached the semifinals of Toronto.

She has had some tough matches en route to the quarterfinals beating the likes of Viktoria Azarenka, Marie Bouzkova and Belinda Bencic. Clearly full of confidence, Pliskova will be a tricky opponent for anyone. Aryna Sabalenka is seeded 6 for this tournament and heads into this match up in a fine mood after a great win in the last round over Danielle Collins. Against one of the most consistent and grittiest opponents on tour, Sabalenka showed fantastic composure and used her booming serve to full effect. Wins over Clara Brunel, Kaia Kanepi and Catherine Harrison have been impressive and she is looking to reach her second successive US Open semifinal. With both players having excellent serves, I expect this to be fast and furious with Sabalenka winning in three sets.

Jack’s US Open Pick:

Set Betting – Sabalenka 2-1 (+310)

Iga Świątek (1) vs Jessica Pegula (8)

The world number one continues her quest for another Grand Slam title, and standing in her way is the local favorite, Jessica Pegula. Świątek faced somewhat of a scare in the Round of 16, as she dropped the first set, but she was able to come back and win the match fairly comfortably, including 6-0 in the third set. The American has only dropped one set on her way to the quarterfinals, and in her last match, she defeated Kvitová.

Aleksandar Ricliev

Jessica Pegula has been impressive at the US Open. She had been having a shaky year before coming to this tournament. After reaching the final at the Madrid WTA and losing to Jabeur 1-2, she lost in the quarterfinals of Roland Garros to Swiatek. At Wimbledon, she managed to win two rounds and lost in the third round to Martic. However, she has been imposing in the last four matches at the US Open. She lost only one set to Yuan and ended up victorious in the other three matches in over an hour. She blitzed Kvitova in the last round and is presenting to be a worthy opponent.

Iga Swiatek has been the most successful player this season. She has won in Stuttgart, Rome, and at the French Open. Swiatek has also been dominating in this tournament, winning the first three rounds by a landslide. However, in the last match versus Niemeier, she showed some weaknesses and struggled in some parts of the game. The powerful attacks of Neimeier proved too challenging for her to handle, and Swiatek lost the first set. In the second and third sets, she consolidated her game and managed to earn the win. I believe this will be a great match to watch, and I predict Swiatek moving forward.

Aleksandar’s US Open Pick:

Match Winner – Swiatek (-210)

Denis Kirilov

Iga Swiatek continues to be a top favorite to win the US Open, but she has shown some concerns in her fourth round match against Jule Niemeier. She lost the first set and was a break of serve down in the second part of their meeting before picking up just enough pace to win 11 of the last 13 games. Swiatek has had a fantastic campaign so far as she took off with 37 straight wins, marking her dominance in the first half of the season. However, her performance took on a slight downfall ever since losing to Alize Cornet at Wimbledon, which might turn out to be decisive in her quarterfinal in New York.

On the other hand, Jessica Pegula seems to be in the form of her life. The 28-year-old American has found her rhythm this year which helped her reach a new career-high of World No. 7. However, she is still looking for her maiden semifinal at a Grand Slam which can be considered a huge step towards the ultimate goal to lift the trophy. Pegula will most likely end up in the top 5 after the US Open, and she might also continue to be American No. 1 in the rankings. Her playing style can help her against Swiatek as she tends to play aggressive from the baseline without many errors. That’s why I think that the current circumstances benefit her as she can pull off an upset against the top favorite.

Denis’ US Open Pick:

Match Winner – Jessica Pegula (+170)

For the third time this season, Jessica Pegula has reached the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam. Her quarterfinal run at this year’s US Open marks her best ever run at her home slam and she will be desperate to reach a first ever Grand Slam semifinal. Pegula has lost just one set so far in her run to the quarters and clearly her game is in excellent working order. Despite heading into this match as the underdog, Pegula will be hoping the passionate home support will lift her to the win of her career.

Standing in Pegula’s way is the impressive Iga Swiatek who is looking to capture her second Grand Slam of the year, following a victory earlier in the season at the French Open. Since losing to Alize Cornet at Wimbledon, Swiatek’s form has been a little indifferent and she survived a huge scare in the last round, eventually ending Jule Niemeier in three sets. That was the first set that Swiatek had dropped all tournament. Surprisingly for a player of her ability, this is Swiatek’s best ever US Open performance and the talented Pole is looking to reach her first ever US Open semifinal. She holds a 2-1 head to head lead over Pegula, and has beaten the American in both Miami and the French Open this season. Often having too much power for the diminutive Pegula, I would be surprised if she didn’t come out on top once again.

Jack’s US Open Pick:

Set Betting – Swiatek 2-0 (+110)
