Detroit Red Wings @ Chicago Blackhawks – 12:30 PM ET

The Red Wings lost the opener of this two-game set with Chicago on Friday night, 4-1. Goal scoring continues to be a major issue for Detroit, as they have 10 goals through the first five contests, and four of those goals came in a victory over Carolina in the second game of the season.

They have been held to two goals or less in three games. Dylan Larkin is the team’s leading scorer with five points. Bobby Ryan has four of the team’s 10 goals with Larkin adding three of them.

Someone else needs to step up on this team. Goaltending has been solid. Jonathan Bernier (2.00 GAA) and Thomas Greiss (2.74 GAA) both have played well in net but are getting no offensive support.

Chicago earned their first victory of the season with the win over the Red Wings. After giving up five goals in each of the first four games, Kevin Lankinen broke the string by stopping 30 of 31 shots in the victory.

Alex DeBrincat and Dylan Strome each had two assists in the victory. The Blackhawks have allowed 21 goals, the most allowed in the Central Division. They are also the top team in the division in terms of goals scored at 13. Patrick Kane, who had a goal and an assist against Detroit is the team’s leading scorer with five points. Eight players have at least three points for Chicago.

Buffalo Sabres @ Washington Capitals – 3:00 PM ET

The Buffalo Sabres lost to the Washington Capitals for the third time this season, falling in a shootout on Friday, 4-3. The loss dropped Buffalo to 1-3-1. The challenge has been goal scoring.

The Sabres have scored 14 goals the season, but six came in a victory over Philadelphia on Monday. That leaves eight goals for the other four contests. Taylor Hall and Jack Eichel lead Buffalo in scoring with six points each.

The goaltending has been good enough. Carter Hutton has been between the pipes for three of the team’s games this season, posting a 2.65 GAA and a .899 save percentage.

Washington kept alive their consecutive point streak with the victory. The Capitals have three victories and have earned points in two overtime losses to Pittsburgh, giving them a 3-0-2 record.

Vitek Vanacek earned the victory, stopping 27 shots. Vanecek now has a 2.90 GAA and a .898 save percentage. Tom Wilson leads the team in points with six with four players close behind with five each. Washington has 19 goals through the first five games but has allowed 17.

Vegas Golden Knights @ Arizona Coyotes – 4:00 PM ET

The mighty Vegas Golden Knights finally lost their first game of the season, losing to Arizona on Friday, 5-2. Vegas had rolled through their first four games, including defeating the Coyotes twice earlier in the week.

However, despite peppering Arizona netminder Darcy Kuemper with 31 shots, they could not stop Arizona’s most productive offensive performance of the year.

The Golden Knights are tied atop the West Division. They have allowed 12 goals the season, led by netminder Marc-Andre Fleury who boasts a 1.51 GAA and a .933 save percentage in starts.

Thanks to a goal and two assists from Conor Garland, Arizona was finally able to knock Vegas from the ranks of the undefeated. Garland now leads the team with six points.

Nick Schmaltz is second with five points, tied with two other players. Phil Kessel is the team’s leading goal scorer with four. The performance by Kuemper was by far his best of the season.

Toronto defeated Edmonton on Friday to move to 4-2-0. They have scored 19 goals while allowing 17. The victory was highlighted by goaltender Frederik Andersen, who had gotten off to a slow start but stopped 30 of 32 shots.

Mitchell Marner had a goal and an assist. He now leads the team with eight points, including four goals, tied for the team lead. John Tavares has seven points and is tied for the team lead in goals with four.

Calgary has only played three games this season and are 2-0-1 with their only loss being an overtime defeat against Winnipeg in the first game of the season. Calgary has been off since Monday, so how well they perform after such a long layoff will be an interesting dynamic to this game.

The Flames are getting outstanding goaltending from Jacob Markstrom who has a 1.99 GAA and a .935 save percentage. Calgary has allowed six total goals the season. Three players have four points to lead the team in scoring.

NHL Pick – Calgary Flames (-115)

However, they have scored only nine goals this year. Three players have two goals each, meeting someone else down the roster is going to need to start stepping up.

With the loss to New York, New Jersey saw their three-game point streak and. They are now 2-1-1. The Devils have also struggled to score goals as well, recording just nine. Miles Wood leads the team with three goals and Jack Hughes has two goals and four assists.

New Jersey is looking for some help further down their lineup as well. Mackenzie Blackwood has been outstanding in his three appearances, posting a 1.90 GAA and a .948 save percentage.

The combination of Alexandar Georgiev (2.40 GAA) and Igor Shesterkin (2.95 GAA) have been solid in net. Artemi Panarin leads the team in scoring with five points. Only 10 players on the roster even have a point this season.

With the shootout victory, Pittsburgh now has three wins in a row, all of them coming in the extra session. They have two shootout wins and an overtime victory. The Penguins have scored 18 goals this year in five games, but they have struggled between the pipes, allowing 21 goals.

Casey DeSmith has been quite good with a 2.76 GAA and a solid save percentage of .871. However, Tristan Jarry (5.28) has struggled. Sidney Crosby continues to dazzle, leading the team in goals (3) and the points (5).

Colorado defeated Anaheim in overtime on Friday, 3-2. Philipp Grubauer continues to dazzle early on, stopping 36 of 38 shots. He now has a 2.00 GAA and a .931 save percentage through four starts. The excellent goaltending has meant that Colorado has allowed just 12 goals the season while scoring 17.

Nathan MacKinnon leads the team in scoring with seven points. Mikko Rantenen is the leading goal scorer with four. MacKinnon, Rantenen and Gabriel Landeskog, who scored the game-winning goal in overtime, have combined for nine of the team’s 17 goals.

With the loss, the Ducks dropped to 1-2-2. It continues to be goal scoring that is a problem for this team as they have netted just eight through the first five games.

Los Angeles earned their first victory of the season on Thursday when they defeated Colorado, 4-2. The Kings are facing the Blues on Saturday. This article was written prior to the conclusion of that contest.

Los Angeles was getting terrible goaltending early on, but Jonathan Quick looked very good against Colorado on Thursday. Since he did not start on Saturday, it is likely he will be in goal on Sunday. Quick has a 3.11 GAA and a .897 save percentage. Anze Kopitar led Los Angeles in points with six heading into Saturday’s action.

St. Louis had split their first four games to start the season. Jordan Binnington was between the pipes for Saturday’s game. Unless the team is willing to come back to him on Sunday evening, that will mean that Ville Husso will be in net.

Husso was bombarded in his one appearance this season, giving up four goals on 14 shots. He lasted just one period. St. Louis has not been much of an offensive machine, scoring 10 goals through the first four games.

NHL Pick – Los Angeles Kings (+175)

Game Totals Pick – Over 5.5 (-110)

Martin Jones has performed just as we have seen over the last four or five seasons, posting a 3.08 GAA and a .893 save percentage. Tomas Hertl leads the team in scoring with six points. Jones is used to his team putting up four goals per night, but is not getting much offensive support early on.

Minnesota is 4-1-0, and have moved to the top of the division. They have scored 15 goals the season while allowing only 10. It has been the incredible combo of Cam Talbot and rookie Kaapo Kahkonen who have done a great job.

The rookie has been particularly sharp, posting a 1.20 GAA and a .951 save percentage in his two victories. Joel Eriksson, Jordan Greenway, and Kirill Kaprizov are tied for the team lead with five points each.

NHL Pick – Minnesota Wild (-161)
NHL Spread – Minnesota Wild -1.5 (+172)

Nashville was absolutely pummelled by Dallas on Friday, 7-0. That moved the team to 2-2-0. The Predators now find themselves with 10 goals and have allowed 14. They have now scored just two goals in the last two games. Offense has been a problem early on. Filip Forsberg has three goals and is tied for the team lead in points with three.

Dallas was playing in their first game of the season and sure made quite an impression. The Stars took a little time to get their legs under them as they were held off the scoreboard in the first period, but netted five goals in the second to take a commanding lead.

Anton Khudobin stopped all the 34 shots he faced. Show Pavelski had two goals and two assists and Alexander Radulov added two goals and an assist. Amazingly, the +7 differential gives Dallas the second best differential in the NHL and they have only played one game this season.

NHL Spread – Dallas Stars -1.5 (+236)
Game Totals Pick – Over 5.5 (-105)

Edmonton Oilers @ Winnipeg Jets – 9:00 PM ET

With the 4-2 loss to Toronto on Friday, Edmonton now falls to 2-4-0. The team struggled to score goals early on with just 15, while allowing 20. The combo of Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl has been great as they are tied for the team lead in points with seven.

Edmonton also has two players with five points each, but the points are few and far between after that. Mikko Koskinen is proving to be a workhorse early on, playing in all six games while posting a 3.21 GAA and a .905 save percentage.

Winnipeg beat Ottawa on Thursday, 4-1. That moved them to 3-1-0. They are playing the Senators on Saturday, but that game did not conclude before this article was written. Winnipeg is getting outstanding goaltending, allowing 10 goals this season.

Connor Hellebuyck has a 2.00 goals-against average and a .935 save percentage in three games. He is in net on Saturday against Ottawa which will likely mean that Laurent Brossoit (2.94 GAA) will get the start on Sunday. Kyle Connor leads the team with three goals and seven points.
