New York Rangers @ Washington Capitals – 12.00 PM EDT

Playing at the Capital One Arena it’s the Capitals who play host to the Rangers. Washington head into this clash off the back of a strong 4-0 victory over the Devils, a match in which Alex Ovechkin scored twice. As for New York, well their last outing was a disappointing 2-1 defeat to the Flyers.

Washington’s win has helped them consolidate 1st place in the East Division. While New York on the other hand is in 6th and 5 points off a playoffs spot. The Capitals have only lost twice from their last 13 games. For the Rangers they have suffered 6 losses over that same span. While Washington is sitting comfortably up top, New York is perhaps struggling a little bit.


From the Capitals emphatic victory, outside of Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom scored 11:50 into the 1st and Conor Sheary also got one 7:13 into the 3rd. And the Rangers sole goal was produced via Mika Zibanejad after a good pass from Ryan Strome. That was 10:54 into the 1st.

From 7 of Washington’s last 9 games, they have scored 4 goals or more in each encounter, including putting 6 past the Sabres at one stage. It’s simply undeniable how good their attack can be when it all clicks together. That’s why they get the win.

Columbus Blue Jackets @ Detroit Red Wings – 3.00 PM EDT

This unpredictable clash sees Detroit host Columbus only a day after they pulled out a massive performance over them as they won 3-1. Two goals in the 1st through an Adam Erne shot from in front and a Robby Fabri goal after putting in the centring feed from Dylan Larkin was enough to see them through the match, despite Columbus pulling the margin back to one in the 2nd.

The Blue Jackets remain on 13 wins, while the Red Wings are now only two behind them on 11.  When you analyse why each side is underperforming this season DEFENCE is a keyword. In 5 of their last 6 clashes Columbus have given up 4 goals or more, that includes when they gave up 5 to the Panthers at one point. It’s sad to see given their attack has been decent at various stages.


Moving onto the Red Wings, over their last 3 games prior to their win, they had given up a total 12 combined goals. The lowlight of that was their 7-1 defeat to the Predators, a game which saw them lose 4-1 in the 1st alone.

Whatever each side is doing in games/training isn’t working and to make the finals you need to have good defensive tendencies, it’s that simple.

Anaheim Ducks @ St Louis Blues – 5.00 PM EDT

The St. Louis Blues play host to the Anaheim Ducks at the Enterprise Center in what is a battle of 4th vs 8th in the Honda West Division. While the Blues may have 6 more wins this season than that of the Ducks (16 vs 10), given each side has a negative DIFF of -12 and -38 respectively, that should make it interesting to see how this one plays out.

St. Louis have lost their last 3 games in a row with the latest of those coming heavily, going down 4-1 to Anaheim. With the Ducks scoring twice in both the 2nd and 3rd periods they made life incredibly difficult for the opposition.


The Ducks pulled out the win somehow despite a lot of the major statistical categories going against them. They had 24 shots to the Blues 34 and won only 37.8% of their faceoffs in comparison to St. Louis who won 62.2% of theirs. Anaheim also turned the puck over on 9 occasions.

The scoring was opened in the 2nd after Jacob Silfverberg took a sharp angle shot that went in off Sam Steel. And the final goal came via Rickard Rakell after he shot it into an empty net in the 3rd.

The clash should be a lot closer this time around.

New Jersey Devils @ Boston Bruins – 5.30 PM EDT

It’s the Bruins playing the Devils at home in an encounter being contested between two Massmutual East Division rivals. When these two teams last went head-to-head all that separated them was a late 3rd period Kyle Palmieri goal. Will struggling New Jersey take charge again here? Or will it be the Bruins who win it?

Former NO.25 pick David Pastrnak is one to keep an eye on. The RW for the Bruins has failed to score over his last two appearances vs BUF and NYI. Adding onto that pressure is the fact that his +/- on the season which is 7 would rank as his second worst since the 2015-16 season. Now coming up against a struggling New Jersey side, this match is the perfect opportunity for him to change all of that.


Moving onto form, the Bruins last 3 games have seen them beat BUF 3-2, L (OT) vs NYI (3-4) and W vs BUF 4-1. For the Devils, their score-lines have been L 4-0 vs WAS, L 3-4 vs WAS and a 4-3 W vs PHI. Boston has the form headed into this one whereas New Jersey just doesn’t.

Linking back to Pastrnak, expect him to be one of the key offensive difference makers in what should be a fairly easy Boston victory.

Florida Panthers @ Dallas Stars – 6.00 PM EDT

The Panthers and Stars latest matchup saw Florida prevail 4-3 in OT in what was a hugely entertaining clash. Now going at it again at the American Airlines Center, will the Panthers continue their clutch magic? Or will the Stars reverse the result? For Dallas the loss was a severe blow to their finals hopes, so no doubt they’ll come out fired up in this clash!

In OT it was at the 4:50 mark that the game was won. Aaron Ekblad managed to get rid of several defenders before he committed to the strong backhander which delivered his side an extra two points. Outside of his commanding game, Carter Verhaeghe was also incredibly strong as he scored on 3X occasions. It was a wrist, backhand, then wrist shot again for him.


This was the Panthers first win in four attempts. Prior to that they had gone down 3-0 and 2-3 to the Blackhawks, as well as losing 3-5 to the Lightning. For the Stars, this was their 5th loss from 7 attempts. Two of their losses were during shootouts. In all fairness to them they are right there competing with others, they just don’t have the finishing touch required.

This may well prove to be what costs them vs Florida … again.

Ottawa Senators @ Montreal Canadiens – 7.00 PM EDT

Nashville Predators @ Chicago Blackhawks – 8.00 PM EDT

Only just today it was the Predators who sunk their teeth into the Blackhawks as they came away with a relatively easy 3-1 win. Scoring a goal over each period Nashville simply proved to be no match for Chicago. And with the Predators only having 4 more shots then the Blackhawks did (34 vs 30), their performance should be seen as quite an impressive one.

Chicago didn’t really offer many signs of encouragement to show that things will change for this clash. They were 0/2 on their power plays while they also lost the puck 6 times in comparison to Nashville who only gave it up twice. If Chicago were to win here, then a lot of basic things would have to change about their game.


The Predators first opened the scoring via C Ryan Johansen. That was in the 1st, then in the 2nd it came from RW Rocco Grimaldi. Their final goal was through C Mikael Granlund in the 3rd. It was also a 3-star performance from 23-year-old C Luke Kunin. You just cannot fault them as it was a great game from Nashville.

Patrick Kane had a +/- of +1 in that match for the Blackhawks. If they want to win, then one of their best will have to do a lot better. If not a team effort should see the opposition through here.
