Post NHL Season Review of Metropolitan Division, 2021-22
Wed 13th July 2022

After a thrilling season, the NHL is officially over for another year. So, the team at SportsTips thought it would be a good idea to go through every team in the Metropolitan Division, and have a look at the year that was!

Carolina Hurricanes

It was a solid season for the Carolina Hurricanes but it unfortunately ended in yet another playoff disappointment. They started the year a perfect nine and zero before dropping their first game.

They finished the season with a record of 54-20-8 as they ended the regular season with a Metropolitan Division title and second overall in the Eastern Conference standings. They opened up the playoffs in style with a seven game series victory over the Boston Bruins in Round One.

Unfortunately for the Carolina Hurricanes, they would lose in the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs in seven games to the New York Rangers. The Hurricanes were a very hard team to beat at home this season as they finished the year with a record of 29-12, while they ended the year with a record of 25-16 away from home.

Sebastian Aho was the star of the show for the Hurricanes this season as he led the team in goals with 37, assists with 44 and total points with 81. They scored 278 total goals and gave up 202 and finished the year with a goal difference of plus 76.

Columbus Blue Jackets

Year number two of the Columbus Blue Jackets current rebuild showed a lot of progress, as they were competitive in the majority of their games during the 2021-22 National Hockey League season. They are certainly a team on the rise.

One year after finishing as the worst team in the league, they ended the 2021-22 campaign with a record of 37-38-7 which is a 19 win improvement with an extra 26 played on the year. They ended the season in sixth place in the Metropolitan Division and missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the second straight season.

They scored 262 goals and gave up an even number of 300. They finished the year with a winning record at Nationwide Arena as they had a 21-20 record at home. However, things didn’t go as well on the road as they ended the year with a record of 16-25 outside of Columbus.

Oliver Bjorkstrand led the Blue Jackets with 28 goals while Jakub Voracek led the way with 56 assists and 62 total points. Elvis Merzlikins was the top goalie with 28 of the Blue Jackets 37 wins on the year.

New Jersey Devils

It was a disappointing year for the New Jersey Devils this season, as they found themselves positioned towards the bottom of the National Hockey League standings for the majority of the year. They would go to finish the season with a record of 27-46-9.

They finished the year 28 games below the .500 mark and seventh place in the Metropolitan Division. As well as 14th out of 16th overall in the Eastern Conference, which is disappointing after they started out the year with three wins in their first four games of the season.

Not only would they struggle to win on the road away from the Prudential Center but at home as well as they ended the year with 20 wins and 21 losses in the Garden State. As previously mentioned, their road record was even worse as they only managed to win eleven games away from home while losing 30 of them.

They scored 248 goals on the season, while giving up over 300. Jesper Bratt was the main guy on the offense as he was tied for the team lead in goals with Jack Hughes, as they both scored 26. Bratt also led the team with 47 assists and 73 total points in what was his fifth season as a member of the Devils.

New York Islanders

The New York Islanders were predicted to be a solid Stanley Cup contending team but that didn’t go as expected at all. They finished the year as one of the teams in the bottom half of the standings in the National Hockey League. It did not help matters that they had to start the season on a massive road trip.

It was while their brand new arena was being constructed that they played thirteen straight games away from home. However, when they finally got to play in the arena they didn’t exactly give it a warm welcome either. They would start off the year with seven straight losses at home. They would end the year with a home record of 20-21.

They didn’t play much better on the road either as their final road record would end up being 17-24. They would finish the year with a total record of 37-35-10. That was good enough for fifth place in the Metropolitan Division and ninth overall in the Eastern Conference. They would end the year with 231 goals scored and 237 conceded.

Mathew Barzel was once again the leading man for the Islanders as he finished with the lead in total assists with 44 and total points with 59. While Brock Nelson led the way with 37 goals and Sorokin was the leading goalie with 26 of the Islanders 37 victories.

New York Rangers

What was expected to be a disappointing season turned out fantastic for the New York Rangers. They made it all the way to the Eastern Conference Finals after a couple of thrilling playoff series victories. They came back from 1-3 down in the first round to beat the Pittsburgh Penguins and 2-3 down in the second round to beat the Carolina Hurricanes.

However, their luck stopped there as despite having a 2-0 lead over the two time defending Stanley Cup champions, the Tampa Bay Lightning, they would lose four straight and be eliminated. They finished the season in second place of the Metropolitan Division and fourth overall in the Eastern Conference.

They would end the year with a final record of 52-24-6. Inside of Madison Square Garden they were a tough team to beat as they ended the year with nearly double the wins at home than losses. Their final record through 41 games was 27-14. While on the road they finished 25-16 which was successful as well.

Chris Kreider was the leading scorer with an impressive 52 goals. While Artemi Panrin led the way with 74 assists and 97 total points. Igor Shesterkin was in net for 36 of New York’s 52 wins and they scored 254 goals while giving up 207.

Philadelphia Flyers

It was a less than impressive year for the Philadelphia Flyers as the city of brotherly love felt more like the city of disappointment. The Flyers finished the season with a record of 25-46-11 and in last place of the Metropolitan Division and next to last overall in the Eastern Conference.

Not only did they struggle to win at home, as they ended the year with nearly double the losses at home as they did victories, but they only managed to win 11 games away from home as well. They ended with a 14-27 home record and a 11-30 road record. They would also end the season with a negative goal difference of minus 87 as they scored 211 goals and gave up nearly 300.

They went through two head coaches during the 2021-22 season as Alain Vigneault was fired on December 6th after a 8-11-4 start in the middle of a ten game losing streak. While Mike Yeo would finish the season with a record of 17-35-7 and not be retained. They would also trade away capitan and team lifer Claude Giroux towards the end of the year after playing over one thousand games with the team.

James Van Riemsdyk led the team with 24 goals while Travis Konecny had 36 assists and 52 total points. Carter Hart became the leading goaltender as he was in net for 13 of the Flyers 25 victories on the year. Trading Claude Giroux shows that Philadelphia was entering into the first steps of a potentially lengthy rebuild.

Pittsburgh Penguins

It was a solid year for an aging Pittsburgh Penguins squad that seems like it’s nearing the end of its nearly two decade run as a contender team in the National Hockey League. They managed to qualify for the Stanley Cup playoffs but didn’t make a ton of noise while they were there.

That’s not to say they did not have the opportunity as they held a 3-1 lead over the New York Rangers at one point. However, they would go on to blow that lead and find themselves sent home after three straight losses in the first round.

They would finish the regular season in third place of the Metropolitan Division and seventh overall in the Eastern Conference. Their final record on the year was 46-25-11 as they were a respectable 23-18 at home in the steel city and 23-18 on the road as well which shows how consistent they were throughout the season. They scored 272 goals and gave up 229.

Jake Guentzel was the leading scorer with 40 goals, while Kris Letang led the way with 58 assists. Long time star and captain Sidney Crosby finished the season tied for the total points lead alongside Jake Guentzel with 84. While Tristan Jary was the leader in net with 34 of the Penguins 46 victories on the season.

Washington Capitals

While the Washington Capitals once again failed to capture another Stanley Cup, it does not mean the team did not make any history during the 2021-22 campaign. As franchise legend Alexander Ovechkin continued his pursuit towards the all-time goal scoring record currently held by Wayne Gretzky. He led the team in goals with 50 and total points with 90.

The Capitals finished the regular season with a record of 44-26-12 as they finished in fourth place of the Metropolitan Division and eighth overall in the Eastern Conference. Washington made it through all of October without losing in regular time.

They qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs but lost in the first round to the Florida Panthers in six games. They would end the season as one of the rare teams in the National Hockey League with more road wins than home wins. As they went 25-16 on the road and 19-22 at home in the nation’s capital.

They would score 275 goals while giving up 245, as they finished the year with a plus 30 goal differential. Alongside Alexander Ovechkin’s 50 goals, John Carlson and Evgeny Kuznetsov would lead the team in assists with 54 a piece. While Ilya Samsonov would lead the team in net with 23 of the Capitals 44 wins.
