The strikeout-prone Seattle Mariners (32-33) will have their work cut out for them at T-Mobile Park on Tuesday against the Miami Marlins (37-30) and Edward Cabrera, owner of one of this season’s best K/9 rates.
The Mariners took Monday’s series opener 8-1. Starter Bryce Miller went six innings, allowing one run on one hit and striking out six, to get the win.
Tom Murphy went 2 for 4 with a home run and a double in the win. He scored two runs. Eugenio Suarez added a solo home run. Nick Fortes had the only hit for Miami, going 1 for 3 with a solo home run for the Marlins.
ON THE MOUND
Cabrera (5-4, 4.29 ERA) is in line for the start for Miami. The righty allowed one run over five innings in his last start, a 6-1 road win over the Royals on Wednesday. He was credited with the win, yielding two hits while striking out four and walking two.
Righty George Kirby (5-5, 3.50 ERA) will take the mound for Seattle. It’s his first appearance of the season against the Marlins. In his last start on Wednesday, Kirby took the loss on the road against the Padres. He threw 3.2 innings and gave up five runs on 11 hits, striking out three, in the 10-3 defeat.

Over the last five games, Miami has averaged 3.8 runs a game, a small drop compared to their season average of 4.0. Against right-handed pitchers like Kirby this season, the Fish have a .693 OPS.
Luis Arraez is the team’s most potent producer against right-handers with a .939 OPS in 178 at-bats. Seattle is averaging 5.0 runs per game in the last five, up slightly from 4.4 for the season.
The M’s have a .691 OPS against right-handers in 2023. With a .802 OPS over 140 at-bats, J.P. Crawford has been their best hitter against right-handers.
