Los Angeles Angels @ Detroit Tigers – 1:10PM ET

Tony Battalio

The Los Angeles Angels and the Detroit Tigers were originally supposed to play the second game of the series on Wednesday night before it was postponed. Now this game will serve as the first game of the doubleheader here on Thursday afternoon. The Angels were expected to be one of the better teams in the league this season, but they haven’t quite lived up to expectations, and it was announced earlier that they would not be trading Shohei Ohtani, which means they are going to sell out to make the postseason this year. They certainly have a lot of work to do and that starts in the opening game of this doubleheader here on Thursday afternoon.

The Detroit Tigers have been underwhelming so far this season, but they are still within striking distance of the American League Central division as the trade deadline quickly approaches. It awaits to be seeing if they will be buyers or sellers at the deadline as they come into this game under .500 looking to get themselves back to even as they try to chase down Minnesota and Cleveland for one of the top two spots in the American League Central division. With Shohei Ohtani expected to take the mound for the Los Angeles Angels in the opening game of the doubleheader, I have Los Angeles grabbing a comfortable victory over Detroit here on Thursday afternoon.

Los Angeles Angels @ Detroit Tigers – 4:10PM ET

Tony Battalio

The second game of this doubleheader will be a lot more telling then the first because of the overwhelming advantage Los Angeles possesses in the pitching matchup during the first game with Ohtani taking the mound. As Patrick Sandoval is expected to get the start for the Los Angeles Angels in the second game of this doubleheader against the Detroit Tigers on Thursday afternoon. Los Angeles will be hoping to grab a pair of victories here on Thursday as they try to fight their way back into the playoff race in the American League. Los Angeles has been hot as of late as they have picked up seven victories in their last 10 games of the season.

Detroit Tigers coming to the second game of the doubleheader, hoping that I can grab a pair of victories over the Los Angeles Angels to wrap up this three-game series. Detroit has been treading water as of late as they have picked up five victories in their last 10 games of the season and they currently sit in the middle of the pack in the American League Central division. Despite having nearly 10 more losses than wins this season, they are only a handful of games out of first place in the division, because of how poor the division has been up until this point of the year. However, I expect them to have a rough afternoon as I look for them to lose both of these games to the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday.

Washington Nationals @ New York Mets – 7:10PM ET

Tony Battalio

It has been a rough season for the Washington Nationals, but they will have an opportunity to take advantage of a struggling New York Mets team, and get a victory here in the opening game of this four game weekend series on Thursday night. Washington comes into the opening game of this series with a record of 43-59 through their first 102 games of the 2023 Major League Baseball season. Despite being one of the worst teams in baseball, Washington is having a good run of form as of late as they are on a two game winning streak, and have picked up six victories in their last 10 games of the season.

The New York Mets have invested a lot of money into their roster this season, but it hasn’t quite paid off with their play on the field. They have been an average team all season long and with each passing game it looks more and more likely that they are going to miss out on the postseason this year, despite having one of the highest payrolls in all of Major League Baseball. The New York Mets will be looking to bounce back after they dropped the second game of a quick two game series to the New York Yankees on Wednesday night. As they will be looking to get back into the winners column against a less than impressive Washington ballclub. That is exactly what I expect as I have the New York Mets picking up the comfortable victory here in this game.

NY Mets (-200)

Chicago Cubs @ St.Louis Cardinals – 7:45PM ET

Tony Battalio

The Chicago Cubs went down early in the finale of their series against their crosstown rivals, the White Sox on Wednesday night. However, they stormed back with a six run inning midway through the game and the two teams continued to trade shots back-and-forth throughout the remainder of the contest. Is the first time in a while that their offense has shown any kind of life and they will be looking to do the same in the opening game of this four game weekend series between them and the St. Louis Cardinals. Chicago’s has had a rough season up until this point, but they are not quite out of the playoff race yet because of how weak the National League Central division has been.

The St. Louis Cardinals have been underwhelming up until this point of the season and they are quickly running out of time to turn things around if they wanna compete for a spot in the playoffs. They were a team that was expected to compete for the National League Central division title, but they have looked awful as many teams around the league have hit the 100 game mark on the season. The Cardinals come into the opening game of the series well under .500 at the moment, as they have compiled a 46-57 record through their first 103 games of the 2023 Major League Baseball season. I don’t expect it to go much better for them and this one as I have Chicago picking up the victory over St. Louis here on Thursday night.

Chicago Cubs (-110)

Cleveland Guardians @ Chicago White Sox – 8:10PM ET

Tony Battalio

The Cleveland Guardians picked up a big victory on Wednesday afternoon over the Kansas City Royals to grab up their third consecutive series victory. They have knocked the Minnesota Twins lead in the American League Central division down to two games and Cleveland will be looking to use the momentum from their series victory to get a win over the Chicago White Sox in the opening game of this four-game series. José Ramirez has been one of the best hitters in all of baseball over the last month or so and their young starting pitchers are getting the job done as well. This is certainly a team that is capable of a deep playoff run if they can remain healthy and consistent throughout the remainder of the regular season.

It has been a rough year for the Chicago White Sox, and they will be looking to regroup and potentially play spoiler as they open up this four game weekend series against Cleveland at home. They come into this game well under .500 at the moment, as they have managed to take themselves out of the playoff race in the worst division in all of baseball this season. As they are double digit games, out of first place behind Minnesota at the moment, and they are getting further and further away every day. I expect the Cleveland Guardians to grab a comfortable victory in the opening game of the series against the Chicago White Sox on Thursday night in the Windy City.

SportsTips’ MLB Pick:

Cleveland Guardians (-105)
