The Purdue Boilermakers (26-5, 15-5 Big 10) take on the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (19-13, 11-10 Big 10) Friday at United Center in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tourney.
Rutgers defeated the Michigan Wolverines 62-50 at United Center yesterday in the second round. Cam Spencer was a top performer with 18 points. Purdue found victory on Sunday at Mackey Arena, beating the Illinois Fighting Illini 76-71 to close out their regular season. Brandon Newman had 19 points and six rebounds to lead the team.
Rutgers triumphed in the only game against Purdue this season 65-64 at Mackey Arena on January 2. Paul Mulcahy led the Scarlet Knights with 16 points, eight rebounds, and six assists.
Zach Edey had 19 points, 11 rebounds, and three assists in the loss. Clifford Omoruyi and Spencer, averaging 13.3 and 12.9 points per game, respectively, are leading the Scarlet Knights in scoring this season.
Omoruyi also has grabbed 9.8 rebounds per game. Meanwhile, Mulcahy is dishing 4.3 assists per game. Edey (21.2 ppg) has been the primary provider of the Boilermakers’ offense.
Edey also has posted 12.4 rebounds per game, second-most in the country. Braden Smith has recorded 4.2 assists per game.The Scarlet Knights are fifth in defensive efficiency in the country, while the Boilermakers rank 11th in offensive efficiency.
Rutgers is 4-6 in the last 10 games with an average margin of -2.9 (60.4-63.3). For the season, the Scarlet Knights are averaging 68.0 points per game, compared to 60.0 for opponents.
Purdue has a 6-4 record over the last 10, scoring 72.2 points per game on average while holding opponents to 67.1 (+5.1 margin). The Boilermakers are averaging 73.2 ppg for the full season while allowing 62.5.
