The No. 16 Gonzaga Bulldogs (19-5, 8-2 WCC), the NCAA’s top scoring team, host the San Francisco Dons (15-11, 4-7 WCC) on Thursday. San Francisco was defeated by the Santa Clara Broncos 83-70 at War Memorial Gymnasium on Saturday.
Khalil Shabazz had a standout performance in defeat with 31 points and eight rebounds. The Dons remain eighth in the West Coast Conference. Gonzaga came up short on Saturday at University Credit Union Pavilion, falling to the Saint Mary’s Gaels 78-70 in overtime. Drew Timme topped the scoresheet in defeat with 23 points.
With 13 points, Malachi Smith also produced a strong performance. The Bulldogs remain second in the West Coast Conference. The teams are meeting for the last time this season.
Gonzaga will be seeking a season sweep against San Francisco after earning the win in the only previous meeting 77-75 at War Memorial Gymnasium on January 5, their 25th straight head-to-head victory.
Rasir Bolton led the Bulldogs with 21 points. Tyrell Roberts had 18 points in defeat.Shabazz and Roberts, averaging 16.0 and 15.2 points per game, respectively, are leading the Dons in scoring this season. Shabazz also has dished 3.0 assists per game.
Meanwhile, Zane Meeks is grabbing 5.8 rebounds per game. Timme (21.2 ppg) has been the primary provider of the Bulldogs’ offense. He has the 10th-best scoring average in the NCAA. Timme has also averaged 7.5 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game.
The Bulldogs are the most explosive offense in the nation with 85.7 points per game. The Dons are winless in their last 10 trips to McCarthey Athletic Center. In the last 10 games, San Francisco is 4-6 with an average margin of -1.4 (74.6-76.0).
For the season, the Dons are averaging 74.9 points per game, compared to 70.7 for opponents. Gonzaga has an 8-2 record over the last 10, scoring 86.5 points per game on average while allowing 76.1 (+10.4 margin).
