Wimbledon Predictions: SportsTips’ Top Tennis Picks For Round 3

Wimbledon Predictions: SportsTips’ Top Tennis Picks For Round 3
Thu 1st July 2021

Round Three at Wimbledon is upon us! While it may not be the best time for us here in America, we are still keen to see how things shape up, especially considering there are HEAPS of Americans left in the draw. On the women’s side of the draw, there are five Americans left, and on the men’s side of the draw, there are four Americans left.

Unlike in Round One on the men’s side of the draw, there actually wasn’t that many surprises, but there were still some very good games. One of the stand outs has got to be the five set match between Andy Murray and Oscar Otte, and much to the fan delight, the Brit managed to get through.

There were a few more upsets on the women’s side of the draw, the fourth seed, Sofia Kenin was taken out by fellow American, Madison Brengle, and our very own Shelby Rogers managed to dispatch the 15th seeded, Maria Sakkari in straight sets. The third seed, Elina Svitolina was also dispatched in straight sets, by unseeded Magda Linette.

With so much drama already in the first three days, we are expecting more of the same again as we head into the third round. Enjoy our free tennis picks and predictions for each round of the 2021 Wimbledon tournament.

Round 3 Tennis Picks For Wimbledon: Men’s

Novak Djokovic (1) vs Denis Kudla

Things just keep looking better for Novak Djokovic as he continues his quest for yet another Grand Slam title when he takes on Denis Kudla in the third round. Djokovic had a much smoother second round compared to the first. In the second round he comfortably beat Anderson in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3. His first serve was okay, at 63%, but it was the percentage of points won on the first serve that set the two players apart, at 84%.

Djokovic is the clear favorite to win at Wimbledon, at -185, and the next closest player is Daniil Medvedev, at a whopping +700. Even at the -185, we would still see that as a good betting option. We simply cannot see anyone who is left in the draw that could give him a run for his money. Other players just can’t keep up at the same level as Djokovic for a sustained period of time.

Djokovic’s opponent, American qualifier Kudla, took out 30th seed Davidovich Fokina in the first round, in a mammoth five sets. His second round was a lot eaiser for the American, winning in straight sets against Seppi. But Kudla will face a challenge unlike anything else when he faces Djokovic. The pair have met twice before, both at Grand Slam level, and Djokovic has the upper hand, winning the two matches in straight sets.

With Djokovic’s confidence sky high, not to mention his actual skills and experience, we just can’t see how Kudla can even get a shoe in for this match. The only thing that could potentially threaten Djokovic is a lapse in concentration, but even then, that isn’t really too likely. Djokovic will steam roll Kudla in straight sets.

Tennis Pick: Total Sets – Under 3.5 (-330)

Taylor Fritz (31) vs Alexander Zverev (4)

It will be a clash of two seeded players as Taylor Fritz takes on Alexander Zverev in the third round at Wimbledon. It has been an all American encounter for Fritz in the first two rounds of the Grand Slam. He faced off against fellow American Nakashima in the first round, and won in four sets. In the second round he was up against another American in Johnson, and Fritz was pushed to five sets.

It is very surprising to see Fritz perform so well at Wimbledon, considering he had knee surgery just three weeks ago! He is also having a fairly decent season in 2021, with his record currently sitting at 15-10. Fritz also managed to take Djokovic to five sets earlier in the year at the Australian Open. So this is not going to be a walk in the part for the forth seed.

So far this tournament, Zverev has been in cruise control, winning his opening two matches in straight sets, losing only eight and ten games in the first two matches (respectively). Zverev has a lot of confidence coming into Wimbledon, and he has won 26 of his 36 total games so far this year. The pair have played each other three times before, with Zverev leading 2-1. They have only played each other in one Grand Slam match, which was at Wimbledon three years ago, where Zverev won in five sets.

Don’t let the difference in rankings trick you into thinking this will be a clear cut and easy match for Zverev to win. While Fritz does not have the same level of big match experience as Zverev, the experience he does have is pretty promising. Both Zverev and Fritz have a good game that is suitable for grass, and while we think Zverev has enough to get across the line, we think the American can steal a set or two off the German.

Tennis Pick: Total Sets – Over 3.5 (-118)

Marin Čilić (32) vs Daniil Medvedev (2)

Another very interesting clash for us to feast our eyes on, as two seeded players come together in the third round. Marin Čilić will take on Daniil Medvedev for a spot in the next round. Čilić has has a fairly comfortable ride to the third round, only dropping one set in the process.

Although winning his second round match, he did not take all the opportunities he was given by his opponent, only winning three out of 17 break points. The 2014 US Open champion will need to make sure he converts better, if he is given the chance from Medvedev in the third round encounter.

Medvedev is the second favorite to win at Wimbledon, but there is quite a distance in the odds between him and the favorite, Djokovic. He has also had a fairly easy ride into the third round, only dropping one set so far, in his first round clash. Medvedev was much more clinical in his second round match, only dropping seven games. The pair have met once before, and Medvedev won that match in straight sets.

The Russian’s serve and groundstroke will help set him apart from Čilić in this match. It looks like Medvedev has finally found some great form on grass, and we can’t see him slowing down one bit. But Čilić has had success at Wimbledon in the past, so this is not likely to just be a walk in the park for Medvedev. Čilić will put up a good fight, but we still think Medvedev will win in straight sets.

Tennis Pick: Set Betting – Daniil Medvedev 3-0 (+120)

Round 3 Tennis Picks For Wimbledon: Women’s

Maria Osorio Serrano vs Aryna Sabalenka (2)

Unseeded qualifier Maria Osorio Serrano will take on the second seed of Aryna Sabalenka in the third round at Wimbledon. Despite being the number one seed in the qualifiers, Osorio Serrano was taken to three sets in all three of her qualifying matches. She fought through this a made it to the main draw, where she won her first round clash in three sets, and her second round match in two.

It has been a year of transitioning for the 19 year old, as she has made the step up from juniors, where she won the juniors US Open title in 2019. This is her first time in the main draw at Wimbledon and she is certainly turning a lot of heads. But she faces a tough opponent in the third round in second seed Sabalenka.

Sabalenka has dropped one set, in her third round clash, to progress to the third round. There have been a lot of surprising results in the women’s side of the draw, and this has got to be Sabalenka’s best chance of winning a Grand Slam so far, with the likes of Halep, Williams, Kenin and Osaka all out of the tournament. Sabalenka will be looking to make it into the fourth round at Wimbledon for the first time in her career.

The pair have never played each other before, which helps to provide an extra layer of interest for this match! Sabalenka is the clear favorite, thanks to her ranking and experience, but both women will be feeling the nerves, as both look to achieve something they haven’t before in their careers. Sabalenka has an aggressive style of play that will suit her just fine against Osorio Serrano. We think Sabalenka can get the job done in straight sets.

Tennis Pick: Set Betting – Aryna Sabalenka 2-0 (-280)

Elise Mertens (13) vs Madison Keys (23)

We are very excited for this clash and to see another American women in the third round at Wimbledon. Belgian, Elise Mertens will take on American Madison Keys for a spot in the final 16. Interestingly, Mertens didn’t come into Wimbledon with much grass court form under her belt. This hasn’t stopped her from dominating in the first two rounds, only dropping six games in total!

Mertens will face a much tougher opponent in the third round though. This will be a difficult match up for Mertens, but there is a real opportunity for a run deep into the tournament, with a number of star players already out, or never entered The Championships in the first place.

Keys has had a solid year of results so far and has also had two each matches to kick off her Wimbledon campaign, and is yet to drop a set. While Keys has suffered through some injury issues recently, her performances at Wimbledon have been strong, and she will need another strong one to topple the 13th seed. The pair have player each other twice before, with Keys leading the way 2-0.

This is certainly going to be a tight game, and the odds certainly reflect that, with both players sitting on odds of -110 to win the match. Mertens is not a player that is comfortable on grass just yet but she does have powerfully flat groundstrokes that can help her here. Keys will come into this match with confidence, knowing she get beat Mertens. Her style of play is suited to grass more so than Mertens, and despite her recent injuries, we like the look of Keys to get the job done here.

Tennis Pick: Match Winner – Madison Keys (-110)

Ashleigh Barty (1) vs Kateřina Siniaková

World number one, Ashleigh Barty, is back on the again for the third round at Wimbledon when she takes on unseeded player Kateřina Siniaková. Barty showed just why she is the number one player in her second round by making quick work of her opponent, Blinkova, in straight sets. There is still a little bit of concern for the Australian, as she did provide Blinkova with eight break point opportunities.

With the retirement of Williams in the first round, Barty is now the first favorite to take out her first Wimbledon championship, +350. Her next closest rival in the odds is second seeded Aryna Sabalenka, at +750. Barty has been battling injuries as of late, with her injury forcing her to retire from the French Open. But in her first two matches, we have seen no real signs of concerns.

She will face Siniaková who is having a decent start to her Wimbledon campaign, only dropping one game (yes, that’s right – one GAME) in the first match, but faced a tougher opponent in the second round and needed three sets to get the win over American player, Vandeweghe.

The pair have never played each other before, which should make this clash just that little bit more interesting. Barty goes into this match at the favorite, and deservedly so. But there are still dips in her performances to be worried about, and she seems to play a lot of three set matches because of this. She has a kick serve that is the best on court at the moment, and the ability to strike winners at will. It will be tough for Siniaková to get shoe in, if Barty is at her best.

Tennis Pick: Set Betting – Ashleigh Barty 2-0 (-160)

If it's sport, Katherine has got you covered. She doesn't discriminate, and loves all sport equally, from baseball to darts, if there's a competition going on, she is all over it. Her days are filled with watching as much sport, and reading as much as she can.The biggest problem Katherine faces is that she doesn't have enough screens for all the different games she wants to watch (oh and also the lack of sleep...but that doesn't count!).
