Iga Swiatek (1) vs Ons Jabeur (5)

The United States Open Finals are finally here for the Women’s side of the bracket and it will feature two of the worlds best as Swiatek takes on Jabeur. The number one ranked playing in the world went to the limit and won after losing the first set. While Jabeur made it through with a 2-0 victory in straight sets.

What a year for Ons Jabeur! After winning the Berlin WTA and finishing 2nd place at Wimbledon and Rome WTA, she reached another final! And what a performance it has been so far in the US Open! She still has lost only one single set in the tournament to Rogers. In every other match, she has won 2 sets to 0, in an impressive dominating display. In the semi-finals, she drew Garcia – the only player who hasn’t lost a single set in the tournament. Instead of a complex, excruciating battle, we saw Jabeur with another masterpiece performance. Flying on the court with swift, well-placed, powerful strikes proved too much to handle for her opponent. A 2 – 0 win, in only a bit more than an hour. Impressive.

Iga Swiatek has been having an even better year than Jabeur! After losing in the semi-finals of the Australia Open, she won Qatar, Indian Wells, Miami, Stuttgart, and Rome WTA. Then she went on to win the big one – Rolland Garros in a genuinely dominating fashion. Swiatek has held the number 1 place in the ATP list since April. Swiatek and Jabeur have met twice on the tennis court, and the score equals 2-2. These two are, at the moment, the best women’s tennis players in the world. I predict the match going in 3 sets, well over the 22.5 games spread.

Aleksandar’s US Open Pick:

Over 22.5 Games (+110)

This is undoubtedly the best end to the WTA Grand Slam season as it will put up against each other the two most consistent players on the Tour. Ons Jabeur became the first Tunisian and Arab tennis player to win a WTA 1000 title as she defeated the competition in Madrid. She went on to cement her momentum with a trophy in Berlin and two finals in Rome and at Wimbledon. At the 2022 US Open, Jabeur only struggled against Shelby Rogers, who became the only opponent who took a set in their meeting. The Tunisian comes into the biggest match of her career on a highly positive after defeating the best performing player during the American swing this summer. She ousted Caroline Garcia in straight sets in a match that lasted 67 minutes.

On the other hand, Iga Swiatek is certainly the best women’s player this season. She took off with 37 straight wins before losing to Alize Cornet at Wimbledon. However, the Polish looked quite unstoppable during the clay-court season winning three tournaments in a row. She is now looking to get back on the winning road after not being able to lift a trophy after her French Open riot. Having in mind that both players have a strong mentality, I think this will go all the way down the wire. Hence, I believe the best pick here is to go with the “Over”.

Dennis’ US Open Pick:

Over 2.5 Sets (+140)

So there we are, this year’s US Open Final is set between Ons Jabeur and Iga Swiatek. It’s a fitting end to the final grand slam of the year that two of the best players of the year will compete for this major prize.

Ons Jabeur has backed up her performance at Wimbledon and has reached a second successive major final, doing it in style with a comfortable 6-1 6-3 victory over Caroline Garcia. She is the first African and Arab woman to have reached the final in New York. From the outset it looked like it would be a comfortable night for Jabeur who had Garcia all at sea thanks to her mixture of slices and spins. Playing on her big match experience she was the better player physically and mentally. If she can repeat this level of performance she will have a great chance of winning her first major title.

Standing in Jabeur’s way is the world number one and top seed Iga Swiatek. Swiatek has had a great year, the winner of this year’s French Open, Swiatek has been dominant on hard courts too, winning in Doha, Miami and Indian Wells. Coming into this year’s US Open as the overwhelming favourite, Swiatek hasn’t disappointed, but she had to battle hard to get past Aryna Sabalenka in the semi finals. Showing a few signs of nerves and a general unease about her game, Swiatek would lose the first set of their semi final before storming back to claim the second. The third set was dramatic as Swiatek twice fought back from a break down to edge it 6-4. The win will allow Swiatek the opportunity to claim her third grand slam. The head to head between Swiatek and Jabeur s locked at 2-2 with Swiatek winning their last match back in May. That win came in Rome on the clay and I just feel with this match being played on a hard court, it might just suit the tricky Tunisian.

Jack’s US Open Pick:

Jabeur (+150)
