Casper Rudd (5) vs Carlos Alcaraz (3)

The fifth seeded Casper Rudd and the third seeded Carlos Alcaraz will face off to see who wins their first U.S. Open championship in this matchup. In the semifinals Rudd defeated 27th seeded Khachanov in four sets. While Alcaraz outlasted Tiafoe in a five set thriller.

It’s safe to say there is a changing of the guard in the creme de la creme of the tennis elite. Federer is close to retiring, Nadal and Djokovic are getting up there with age, and their body slowly starts breaking down. Casper Ruud and Carlos Alcaraz met each other in the Miami ATP final in April, and this result in the US Open proves they are here to stay and be a force to be reckoned with for years to come. If these two stay healthy and avoid major injuries, I expect them to meet in many finals in the upcoming years!

Ruud and Alcaraz have played each other on three occasions; Alcaraz won two matches, and Ruud was the winner of one. Every match ended 2 – 0 in sets. However, In a final match, previous results and good form – go out of the window. It’s about who can adapt faster and better to the atmosphere and environment and who’s in a better mood. It’s the little things that end up deciding the outcome in the finals. I expect Ruud and Alcaraz to put up a real show for the fans. I would be shocked if any of them could win this match in 3 sets. They will cover the 40.5 games spread – easily!

Aleksandar’s US Open Pick:

Over 40.5 Games (-140)

This year’s US Open Final will be a direct battle for the World No.1 ranking. Both players will have a shot at winning their maiden Grand Slam in their career. Casper Ruud became the first Scandinavian to reach the final since 1992. The Norwegian might write his name in the history books with a win on Sunday night as he can claim both the World No.1 and his first US Open title. Ruud is a typical clay-court player who managed to adapt his playing style to the fast-paced hard surface. He has been on top of his game in New York as he completely dismantled the opposition on his way to the Final. Van Rijthoven, Berrettini, and Khachanov are among his victims this year.

Similar to Ruud, Alcaraz has been dreaming of this moment his whole life. The young Spanish has made his way into the top 10 as he showcased some versatile tennis throughout the past two seasons. However, he enters the US Open Final after three consecutive five-setters. Alcaraz held his nerves against Marin Cilic, Jannik Sinner, and Frances Tiafoe to claim a spot in the most important match of his career. His all-around game helps him be creative enough to be unpredictable for his opponent. On the other hand, he hasn’t yet faced a consistent player on his road to the Final and that’s why I think Ruud might get the upper hand on Sunday.

Dennis’ US Open Pick:

Rudd (+190)

After two contrasting semi finals, the final line up for this year’s US Open is set as third seed Carlos Alcaraz takes on fifth seed Casper Ruud. This final is more than a match. The winner of this match will not only just win their first Grand Slam title, but they will also climb all the way to the top of the world rankings and start next week as the new world number one. Both Ruud and Alcaraz advanced to their first US Open Finals in very contrasting styles.

Casper Ruud took full advantage of an ailing Karen Khachanov dispatching the Russian in four reasonably comfortable sets. The big hitting Russian had battled through two consecutive five set matches to set up the semi against Ruud but was clearly struggling both physically and mentally. Ruud was clearly the fresher man and the better player and his four set victory will see the Norwegian compete in his second major final of the year. Whereas Ruud’s progression has been reasonably serene, Carlos Alcaraz has had to battle through three consecutive five set matches. He staved off a match point in his quarterfinal contest against Jannik Sinner and survived a late fight back against Frances Tiafoe to reach the first Grand Slam final of his career. The two have faced each other in a high profile contest earlier this season when Alcaraz beat Ruud in straight sets in the final of the Miami Masters. Alcaraz is the better player but whether he has enough energy to defeat a player of Ruud’s calibre remains to be seen.

Jack’s US Open Pick:

Alcaraz 3-1 (+290)
