We are now into the final game at the Australian Open. The world number one is hoping to win her first Grand Slam in her home country. Standing in her way is the 27th seed, American Danielle Collins. Who will be victorious in this all important clash?

Enjoy our free tennis picks and predictions for each round of the 2022 Australian Open tournament.

Ashleigh Barty (1) vs Danielle Collins (27)

The world number one, Ashleigh Barty will face off against her third American opponent in a row, in Danielle Collins for the final at the Grand Slam. Barty comes into this game as the heavy favorite as she has been so consistent and dominant throughout the tournament so far. Collins has also had a fantastic tournament, only dropping two sets to make her way to the final, and in the semifinal, she knocked out the seventh seed, Świątek.

Ashleigh Barty comes into this Australian Open Final as a huge favourite to win it after enjoying a fantastic run in Melbourne. She is yet to lose a set as she managed to dismantle players like Amanda Anisimova, Camila Giorgi, Jessica Pegula, and Madison Keys on her way to breaking another record in her career. The Aussie will try to bring the Australian Open title back home for the first time since 1978 when Chris O’Neil won it for the home-side for the last time. Her playing style is impressive as it allows her to keep her consistency throughout the match. The 25-year-old player from Ipswich, Queensland, has never reached the final in her home Grand Slam, but she won two titles from the most decorated tournament in tennis as she won the 2019 French Open and the 2021 Wimbledon Championship. Throughout the last three years she has managed to end the year ranked number 1 which is another example of her consistency.

Danielle Collins, on the other side, has been magnificent in her dominant win over Iga Swiatek in the semifinals. She also displayed a high quality game against Alize Cornet in the quarterfinals which helped her pick up some pace in the most important moment in Melbourne. With this final, the world number 30 will jump up some places in the rankings as she will reach a new career-high 10th place. Even if she wins, she won’t be able to climb the ladder as the gap to Anett Kontaveit in 9th place is quite huge. Her game has improved throughout the tournament and I think she might be able to put up a good fight against Barty. However, on the other hand, the Aussie will be supported by almost everybody in the stands which will serve as a great motivation to win the Grand Slam with the same ease as the previous matches. My pick here will be in Barty’s favour, hoping that she will be more concentrated in the opening games and she will build a decent advantage in the first set.

Ash Barty stands on the brink of history in becoming the first Australian female player to reach the Australian Open final since Wendy Turnbull all the way back in 1980. Barty came into the tournament as the world number one and top seed, and under a huge amount of pressure in trying to end Australia’s wait for a home Grand Slam champion. If Barty is feeling the pressure she certainly isn’t showing it, as the world number one has been supreme this tournament. Barty is yet to drop a set in the tournament and has only dropped serve once. Only once has a player managed to win at least four games in a set against Barty, she has been ruthless and a class above everyone she has faced.

In a sign as to how open the women’s side of the draw is, Barty faces off against 27th seed Danielle Collins in the final, a name few would have predicted advancing this far. Collins has had her best Grand Slam results at Melbourne Park and her final appearance marks the first time she has ever reached this level of a Slam and eclipses the semi final she reached back here in 2018. Make no mistake about it, this will be a test for Barty, Collins is one of the most fiery competitors on Tour, and the prospect of facing an Australian on the Rod Laver arena in the final will not phase her. In fact, I think it’s an atmosphere that Collins will relish. Collins has had a reasonably good draw to reach this stage but will take confidence from wins against both Elise Mertens and Iga Swiatek. The pair have played four times and Barty leads the way 3-1 but Collins was the victor when they last played. I think Collins can play spoiler here, and will back her to pick up the first set which could make this a fascinating final.

Jack’s Australian Open Pick: To Win Set 1 – Collins (+280)
