We are now into the final game at the Australian Open and we could not be more excited! The sixth seed, Rafael Nadal, will be looking to make history and hold the record for the most Grand Slam titles of all time. Standing in his way is the world number two Daniil Medvedev, who was the pre-tournament favorite to win the Australian Open.

Enjoy our free tennis picks and predictions for each round of the 2022 Australian Open tournament.

Rafael Nadal (6) vs Daniil Medvedev (2)

Rafael Nadal has booked himself a spot in yet another Grand Slam final and he will square off against the pre-tournament favorite, Daniil Medvedev. The sixth seed has had a few tough matches so far this tournament, but will be eyeing off his second Australian Open title. The Russian was too good for Tsitsipas in the semifinals, winning in four sets.

Rafael Nadal has been playing on a whole new level throughout this year’s Australian Open. His goal of reaching 21st Grand Slam title, however, goes through the best remaining player in the tournament, Daniil Medvedev. The Spaniard leads 3-1 in head-to-head matches, but all of his wins were from 2019, when the Russian wasn’t that impressive. Once he became even a bit competitive, he defeated Nadal in the 2020 ATP Finals in Turin after making a dramatic comeback in the semifinals. This will surely be one of Nadal’s last chances at reaching the record-breaking 21st title, but his opponent is one of the few on the ATP Tour who can easily stop him. The defensive style of the Spaniard won’t help him much as Medvedev has shown sheer accuracy throughout the last couple of months and also in the most important games here in Melbourne.

The Russian was on the verge of exiting the tournament in the quarterfinals after being 2-0 down against Felix Auger-Aliassime. However, his mentality was on a whole different level than the Canadian as he managed to prevail in the end in a match that went the distance for a total time of 4 hours and 42 minutes on the court. Medvedev was also tested against Stefanos Tsitsipas in the semifinals, but after a narrow third set loss, the Russian had no issues closing out the match – 7-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. He will just need to keep his consistency at a high level against Rafa and his second title will be within his grasp. In my opinion, he is a huge favourite to stop Nadal in his mission and I think he will do so in straight sets – the same exact thing to what he did to Novak Djokovic in the 2021 US Open Final.

The final is set and it’s going to be a cracker as two heavyweights of the game clash as sixth seed Rafael Nadal takes on second seed Daniil Medvedev. Both men stand on the cusp of history with the Spaniard looking to win a record breaking 21st Grand Slam title, whilst Daniil Medvedev would become the first man in the open era to follow up winning a maiden Grand Slam title with another major title. This will be the pairs first Grand Slam meeting since their 2019 epic in the final of the US Open which Nadal won in five sets.

Both players have had their battles on their routes to the final. Medvedev had to stave off match points to get past ninth seed Felix Auger-Alisiamme, whilst Nadal was taken the distance by another Canadian Denis Shapovalov. Nadal has only won in Australia once in his career and despite having much more experience than his rival at this level, Nadal has a tough task ahead of him against the wily Medvedev. Medvedev with his unique style of play will find himself in a lot of the rallies on both his serve and Nadal’s he will come into the final after producing arguably the best two sets of the tournament against Stefanos Tsitipas in the semifinal. If Nadal is to win his record breaking 21st major title, look for the Spaniard to get off to a fast start, there is perhaps no better front runner in the game than Nadal and if he wins the first set he will be difficult to peg back. My money is on Medvedev as he has been my pick since Round 1 –  but it wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest if this match was a repeat of the 2019 US Open final and goes the distance.

Jack’s Australian Open Pick: Set Betting – Medvedev 3-2 (+440)
