Millions around the world will be glued to their TV screens when Croatia face off against Morocco for third place in the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Both Croatia and Morocco played very solidly throughout the FIFA World Cup, and they just missed the Final by one. But there is still so much to play for, as third position in the tournament is up for grabs. Croatia finished second in their group, and then in the knockout stages they beat Japan and the pre-tournament favorites, Brazil. Morocco finished top in their group, and then in the knockout stages they beat Spain and Portugal.

Croatia had an incredible run to the 2022 World Cup Semi Finals, unfortunately they fell just short of making a second straight World Cup Final appearance. They looked like they ran out of gas when they stepped on the field against a much deeper Argentina team and they just couldn’t keep up throughout the 90+ minutes of game time. Now they will be looking to place in the top three for the second straight World Cup after their runner up efforts in 2018 in Russia. This will likely be Modric’s last go at it as well on the international stage. 

Morocco’s Cinderella run finally came to an end against the defending champions on Wednesday afternoon. Now they will be looking to cap off an incredible World Cup experience with a bronze medal and a third place finish with one final win over Croatia. This one could arguably go either way as I could easily see both of these teams staking their claim to a third place finish and a win on Saturday. This is why I am going the safe route and taking both teams to score in this one.

Croatia looked tired and deflated in their loss against Argentina. The amount of time spent on the playing field has caught up with the Croatians, and they will have to dig deep to find some kind of spark. Playing the match for the third place often is an ungrateful task. The player’s spirit is down, and the motivation is low. Croatia is a small country, and after finishing as the runners-up in the 2018 World Cup, winning one more medal will cement their legacy as national heroes. This World Cup is probably the last major tournament for most Croatian players, so they would like to go out with a bang. 

Morocco was the better team in the match against France. Every Moroccan in the world is proud of this national team, and they have a chance to play for a place in history. No African team has ever made it to this stage of the competition. Hurt, injured, and tired, the Moroccan players showed the world what it means to represent your own country in a major competition. I don’t expect anything less from them in the match against Croatia. This will be a slow, low-scoring, tactical match. The 2.5 goals under is a safe bet.

Both Croatia and Morocco are coming off heartbreaking losses in the Semi Final games, cutting short their dream to win the World Cup. Croatia was in their second consecutive Semi Finals but this time stood no chance against Argentina. Luka Modric proved once again that he is a real football legend, leading his team this far in the competition against the odds. Talking about the odds, no one really believed that Morocco would even advance from the Group Stage but they went on to produce historic success, not just for them but for the entire African continent. 

Going into the third place match, a lot will depend on how well the teams have recovered both physically and mentally after the Semi Final losses. Knowing their team spirit and competitiveness, there is no doubt this will be another exciting World Cup game. Usually, the third place games bring many goals since the teams are playing without much pressure and that will be the case this time around.
