Japan vs Costa Rica – 5AM ET

Japan will be looking to extend their winning streak in this game against Costa Rica. Japan pulled off an upset against the powerhouse German team, winning 2-1. Costa Rica was spanked by Spain, in a blowout scoreline of 7-0.

Tony Battalio

Japan had a fantastic come from behind win against the Germans in their first Group Stage game. Now they will be looking to grab another win and clinch their spot in the knockout stage of the 2022 World Cup in this early morning game against Costa Rica. They are a very solid team and a serious dark horse to make a deep run in this tournament as well.

Costa Rica looked completely outmatched in their first Group Stage game. Now they will have another tough task against this solid Japanese team as they will be fighting for their World Cup lives. However, I truthfully don’t believe they have enough talent to get the job done in this one. I expect Japan to earn another win in this game and advance to the knockout stages.

Tony’s FIFA World Cup Pick:

Japan (-217)

Japan gave us the upset of the tournament, beating Germany in the first round. Tight and sturdy defensively, dangerous on counter-attacks, Japan showed the world they belong competitively in the World Cup. The game against Costa Rica poses a different challenge. Japan won’t have to do so much defending, and there won’t have as many open spaces to exploit in their attacks. Japan will have to open up the Costa Rican defense with smart, intricate passes, and that’s a side of them we still haven’t seen in this tournament. A win against Costa Rica practically guarantees them one of the two top places in the group, which leads to the next round of the World Cup.

Costa Rica got pummeled by Spain. Spain completed almost 600 passes only in the first half of the match, as the Costa Ricans completed 230 in the entire game. The difference in class resulted in a one-sided match, with Spain winning it 7-0. Japan is a much less frightening team than Spain, but they also possess the ability to hurt teams. I expect Costa Rica to show their national pride and play much better in this matchup. This should be a close game, but I do expect Japan to pull through and win it.

Going into the World Cup this game looked tough to predict, but based on what we saw in the opening round of Group E, things look pretty clear at the moment. Both teams faced the favorites in this group in the opening round with completely different outcomes. Japan stunned the four-time World Cup champion Germany, turning things around in the last 15 minutes after being a goal down at halftime. All they need to do to advance to the knockout phase is to defeat Costa Rica in this game.

Costa Rica was brutally blown away by Spain losing 7-0, and their spirit is really low at this point. Costa Rica will not give up, but their level of play cannot bring them anything at this tournament. Japan has a positive attitude and has shown an amazing willingness to compete which will be crucial once again in the match against Costa Rica. It may not be that easy, but Japan is winning this one.

Japan (-217)

Belgium vs Morocco – 8AM ET

The second game of the day will see Belgium face off against Morocco. Belgium snuck home with a win in the first game against Canada, winning 1-0. Morocco’s first game was against Croatia, and that clash ended in a 0-0 draw.

Tony Battalio

Belgium looked like a solid team in their first Group Stage game against Canada, as they ended up getting a 1-0 win when the final whistle blew. Now they will be looking to grab another win in this game and all but punch their ticket into the knockout stages of the 2022 World Cup. They have a solid attack and it can carry them far in this tournament as long as they stay consistent throughout the next two games.

Morocco comes into this game after drawing Croatia in their first Group Stage game here in Qatar. They will be looking to bounce back in this second game against Belgium but it certainly won’t be easy for them to do that as they will have to control the Belgium attack and play solid counter attacking football. However, I don’t see that happening as I have Belgium getting the win.

Belgium (-111)

Belgium played a mediocre game against Canada. They were sloppy in possession of the ball, didn’t defend properly, and their best player, Kevin de Bruyne, had an average game by his standards. However, Hazard was a bright spot, as he looked like the most dangerous Belgian on the field, and Batshuayi, the replacement for the injured Lukaku, scored a goal. This is a bad omen for Morocco because I don’t believe de Bryune will have two bad games in a row. If Hazard again shows up in good form, this will be a long day for Morocco’s defense.

Morocco played against Croatia in the first round. It was a tactical battle, and both teams got what they wanted from the match, a point each in a 0-0 draw. With a packed and composed midfield, Morocco will be hard to break down in this match. Their defense is well organized and great at defending set-pieces. This is a proud nation, and they won’t lay down their weapons before the match has even started, that’s for sure. However, the combination of de Bruyne and Hazard will prove too much for Morocco. They will find a way to create a goal, and if they both show up shining in their best light, this could easily be an embarrassing loss for Morocco by 4 or 5 goals. Belgium wins.

Both Belgium and Morocco are satisfied with the result of the opening games of Group F which is probably not the case with the way they played. It is fair to say that Belgium barely survived in the game against Canada; and Morocco was the worse team in the draw with Croatia. Now, they will be going into this second round match playing with a high intensity and possibly end up being very dramatic. Belgium didn’t show any dominance or class that was expected of them against Canada and now they will have an even tougher opponent.

Morocco is a much more experienced team than Canada and is hungry to stay undefeated to keep their chances to advance. They can be dangerous from the left side where Achraf Hakimi plays and Morocco will definitely score against Belgium. Whoever watched Belgium’s game against Canada saw that the only reason they kept a clean sheet was the magnificent day by goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. The same cannot be said for the rest of the Red Devils but knowing how good they actually are, they will not allow any surprise against Morocco and win at least a point. The safest bet for this game is for both teams to score.

Both Teams Score (+110)

Croatia vs Canada – 11AM ET

Both Croatia and Canada will be looking for their first win of the FIFA World Cup tournament. Croatia’s first clash against Morocco ended in a 0-0 draw, whereas Canada ended up losing to Belgium, 1-0.

Tony Battalio

Croatia will be looking to finally put a ball in the net after their first Group Stage game against Morocco ended in a 0-0 draw. They will need to get at least a point in this game against Canada to give themselves a solid chance at advancing out of the Group Stage in the 2022 World Cup. The last time they appeared in the World Cup, they made it all the way to the Final but lost. So not being able to get out of the Group Stage would be a major disappointment for them.

Canada has never managed to score a goal in the World Cup and if they don’t score one in this game, that streak will continue for at least another four years. In their first game they played Belgium, but would go on to lose the game 1-0. Now they will be looking to get a point or three in this game and keep their hopes alive of advancing into the knockout round. I’m going with a Canadian win in this game.

Croatia didn’t show enough quality in the first match against Morocco. Their midfield consisting of Modric, Kovacic, and Brozovic fought hard and had control of the defensive aspect of the game, but the trio couldn’t create anything in attack. There is too much of a burden on the shoulders of the 37 years old Luka Modric to create every goal-scoring opportunity on his own, and I am not sure he can carry it anymore. Not every game, at least. Lovren and Gvardiol commanded the defense perfectly and looked like they could score going forward on every set piece or corner kick. Croatia will have to find a way to win this match because they will play against Belgium in the final round of the Group Stage, which is a much stronger opponent than Canada.

Canada put up an outstanding performance against Belgium. Young, energetic, with a clear plan and strategy, Canada is a force to be reckoned with. However, their inexperience showed as they lost the game 1-0, missing lots of clear-cut opportunities to score themselves. If they repeat the same performance, I believe they will get a positive result in this matchup. According to the bookies, Croatia is the favorite to win this match, but I am going for the upset here. Canada wins and sends Croatia home.

Canada (+240)

Croatia didn’t start the World Cup as expected, playing only 0-0 against Morocco. The Croatian manager Zlatko Dalic even before that game said that it will not be the end of the world if they do not beat Morocco. However, if they failed to do so against Canada, it may actually be the end of the World Cup appearance for them. Croatia has a recognizable style of play with a lot of running and passing with many players covering the backfield. The team spirit and confidence are on the highest possible level and Luka Modric will find a way to lead the 2018 finalists to a win in this game.

Canada has their qualities and proved that they are able to compete against the best in the match against Belgium. They play very offensively and are in Qatar to try to achieve something more than just participate. However, they miss that final ingredient which denies them from converting their scoring opportunities and that will cost them in the game against Croatia as well.

Marko’s FIFA World Cup Pick:

Croatia (+120)

Spain vs Germany – 2PM ET

The final game of the day is probably the most exciting, when we see Spain take on Germany. Spain is flying high after their 7-0 blowout win over Costa Rica. Germany, on the other hand, will be looking for a bounce back win today, after going down to Japan, 2-1.

Tony Battalio

This is going to be the best game of the day as these two European powers get set to square off in their second Group Stage game of the 2022 World Cup. Both of these teams are on different paths in this one after Germany lost their first game and Spain won their first game. The Germans will absolutely need a point in this game to keep their hopes of advancing alive, while the Spanish will need a win to clinch their spot in the knockout round.

Spain can afford to drop points in this one, but ideally they would love to grab three and secure their spot in the Round of 16 with a win. At this point their goal differential is almost unbeatable after they battered Costa Rica 7-0 in the first Group Stage game. I think they will have another stellar performance in this one and grab another win.

Tony’s FIFA World Cup Pick:

Spain (+130)

Spain put seven goals past Costa Rica in the first round of the World Cup. The Spanish side looked mesmerizing to watch, and they reminded us of their golden years when they won the World Cup in 2010 by playing some of the best soccer ever. Luis Enrique has an impressive squad to manage. It’s a combination of players playing in Barcelona and Manchester City. They are the perfect match for his tiki-taka system, and they can razzle and dazzle any opponent. Spain completed almost 600 passes in the first half against Costa Rica, and I am sure the neutral fans loved every second of it.

Germany put up a stinker against Japan. What on paper should have been an easy match turned into a tripping stone for the mighty Germans. However, as surprising as this would sound, they are much better suited to play against Spain than they are against Japan. Germany is a team who loves to play against a high defensive line that provides a lot of open spaces and goal-scoring opportunities behind. This matchup should bring lots of excitement and great football. Spain comes into the game as a slight favorite, but I am picking Germany to win this match.

Germany (+195)

These two teams were seen as major favorites to advance from Group E before the World Cup started, but now after the opening round, things look pretty different. Germany surprisingly lost to Japan 2-1 and now the road to the elimination phase looks very difficult. Without any points, Germany is going in this game and losing is not an option. These German players still remember the 6-0 loss to Spain in the Nations League two years ago and that score shows that this will not be an easy game for them at all.

Unlike Germany, Spain did their job in the opener and they did it perfectly demolishing Costa Rica by 7-0. Luis Enrique has put up a great young squad that may go deep in this tournament. Germany will have to go strong in this game as they desperately need the points, and Spain has no choice and the only way they play is to respond the same way. This will be an open game with many scoring opportunities which will result in goals on both ends.

Marko’s FIFA World Cup Pick:

Both Teams Score (-159)
