Carolina Hurricanes @ Boston Bruins – 7.00PM ET

The Carolina Hurricanes are in the middle of their four game road trip when they travel to Boston and take on the Bruins. The Hurricanes were on a four game winning streak before losing their last two games in a row to the Maple Leafs and the Senators. The Bruins can’t seem to get any consistency as of late, and this has resulted in their season record standing at 26-15-3.

Marko Nadin

The Boston Bruins are sitting in the 8th place in the Eastern Conference, the last one that leads to the playoffs with a comfortable 7 points lead ahead of the Detroit Red Wings. The Bruins are currently at 26-15-3 record and 15-9-1 at home. The Bruins are 5-20 in the puck line at home this season. Boston has lost three of the last five games including a 2-4 home loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins in the last one. Boston Ranks 16th in the league with 3 goals per game and 14th with 2.8 conceded per game. Boston has won 7 of the last 10 against Carolina.

The Carolina Hurricanes are on top of the Metropolitan Division and third in the Eastern Conference with a 31-10-3 record. The Hurricanes have lost the last two games, in overtime against Toronto and 3-4 against Ottawa in the last one. The Hurricanes are the fifth-best scoring team in the league with an average of 3.45 goals per game and rank 1st with only 2.41 conceded goals per game. Carolina has played over the total point margin in the last six games against a team with a winning record. They defeated Boston 7-1 in their last meeting in January.

Marko’s NHL Pick: Over 5.5 (-110)

Jeffery Thomas

Both teams come into this one off a loss on Tuesday and will be looking to get back on track when they meet Thursday in Boston. For the Bruins, it was a 2-4 loss to Pittsburgh at home after being up 2-0 then conceding 4 unanswered goals. They lost more than just the game, as their captain Patrice Bergeron suffered an upper-body injury in the 3rd period in a collision with Sidney Crosby. They also will be without Brad Marchand, due to a looming suspension for his late-game exchange with Pens goalie Tristan Jarry. Sitting at 4th place in the Atlantic, the Bruins will have to rely on their depth in this one.

Carolina has opened their 4-game road trip with back to back 3-4 losses to the Maple Leafs and Senators. Despite that, they are still 7-2-1 in their last 10 games. The Senators game was a 0-4 deficit that they cut to 3-4 with three 3rd period goals but didn’t have enough to complete the comeback. They still cling on to 1st place in the Metro Division coming into Wednesday despite the 2 game slide, but now only up 1 point on both the Rangers and Penguins. The Canes need to get off this losing streak and they know it. On the road against the Bruins though, that’s a tall task and there’s not a lot of confidence on either side in this one. I do, however, see a lot of goals being scored in a tight battle that can possibly get to overtime, so I’m going to take a play on the over.

Jeffery’s NHL Pick: Over 5.5 (-110)

Pittsburgh Penguins @ Ottawa Senators – 7.00PM ET

The Pittsburgh Penguins are in the middle of their three game road trip and they travel to Ottawa to take on the Senators on Thursday night. The Penguins finally managed to snap their losing streak last time out, with a win over the Bruins, 4-2. Surprisingly, the Senators are on a two game winning streak coming into this game, with wins over the Devils and Hurricanes.

Marko Nadin

The Ottawa Senators are 14th in the Eastern Conference with a 16-22-4 record and are 9-11-1 at home. They are coming off a 4-3 upset win over the Carolina Hurricanes which certainly boosts their confidence. The Senators are 19th in the league with just over 30 shots per game and 23rd in goals per game with 2.79. They concede 3.31 goals per game which ranks them 24th. The Senators have played under the total goal margin in 8 of the last 9 games.

The Pittsburgh Penguins went on the All-Star break with four consecutive losses but won the first one after it, 4-2 against the Boston Bruins. The Penguins are now 28-11-8 which puts them 5th in the Eastern Conference. Pittsburgh is 9th in the league with 3.32 goals per game and 6th with 34.4 shots per game. Defensively, they are second in PP% with 87, 4th with 2.57 allowed goals and 9th with 30.4 shots per game. The Penguins have won 7 of the last 10 games against Ottawa.

Marko’s NHL Pick: Pittsburgh Penguins (-225)

Jeffery Thomas

The Penguins are projected to face their former franchise goaltender, Matt Murray on Thursday when they travel to Ottawa. He was slated to face them in Pittsburgh’s 6-4 win over the Sens back on January 20, but was out with COVID. He helped the Pens to a Stanley Cup in 2016 and 2017, but then struggled before eventually being shipped off to Ottawa in 2020. His struggles have popped up this season as well, resulting in him going through waivers and a stint in the AHL, but he’s put it together in his last two starts. He won both of those games, only giving up 3 goals total and will hope to keep that momentum going against his former team. That includes a 4-1 win over the Devils on Monday, where he made 32 saves, earning his first star of the game. Pittsburgh also came out of the break in the win column, a 4-2 comeback over the Bruins in Boston.

In that game, Sidney Crosby netted his 499th career goal, which set up an opportunity to get the milestone 500th in front of an empty crowd in Ottawa due to pandemic crowd restrictions north of the border. Speaking of COVID, they will be without center Evgeni Malkin for a second straight game, due to contracting symptoms over the break. They will hope to get a big win in this one and possibly overtake the Canes for 1st place in the Metro, as they are only one point back heading into Wednesday. The Penguins got a win in their last time out, but it was still another subpar performance and now they get a date with a team that has beaten them in 7 of the past 9. The Senators always find a way to play these guys tough and with the added motivation Matt Murphy will have against his former team, I expect the Senators to at least keep this within a goal throughout. Give me the Sens on the underdog spread line.

Jeffery’s NHL Pick: Ottawa Senators +1.5 (-148)

Washington Capitals @ Montreal Canadiens – 7.00PM ET

The Washington Capitals have a short one game road trip to Montreal when they take on the Canadiens. The Capitals come into this game on a two game losing streak, as they have lost their games to the Oilers and Blue Jackets. The Canadiens enter this game also on a losing streak, but theirs stands at seven in a row, which drops their season record down to 8-30-7.

Marko Nadin

The Montreal Canadiens have fired coach Claude Julien on Wednesday. They have been the biggest disappointment this season as they are at the bottom of the Eastern Conference with a 8-30-7 record after reaching the Stanley Cup last season. The Canadiens have won only one game in 2022 and are currently on a seven-game losing streak. They are hosting the Capitals following a 1-7 loss to the New Jersey Devils. Montreal scores 2.20 goals per game with only Arizona scoring less. The Canadiens allow 3.98 goals per game which is the worst in the league.

The Washington Capitals are 7th in the Eastern Conference with a 25-14-9 record. They are not playing their best hockey lately which saw them falling to 7th place even though they were on top in December. Washington has lost 4 of the last 6 games. They are coming from a 4-5 loss against Columbus at home and previously they also failed 3-5 against Edmonton. The Capitals are 10th in the league with 3.21 goals per game and they allow 2.77 which ranks them 13th. Washington has won 6 of the last 10 against Montreal.

Marko’s NHL Pick: Washington Capitals (-225)

Jeffery Thomas

The Caps will travel to Montreal in hopes to snap out of this slump m they’ve been in. Their record since the calendar has switched to 2022 is 5-8-2 and they’ve lost 4 of their past 6. They came out of the All-Star break with a disappointing effort against the Blue Jackets, losing 4-5. They held leads throughout, and even erased a 3-4 deficit in the third, before the CBJ netted the winner in the final minute. They emphasized putting together a consistent 60 minutes after the loss and will also need to fix the special teams and goaltending to turn things around. Columbus converted 2 of 3 power play opportunities in the game on Tuesday. In fact the Caps have only killed three of nine penalties over the past 3 games and are 2-9 on their own power play.

It also won’t help they will be without Ovechkin for this one, due to Canada’s COVID restrictions. For the Canadiens, their horrible season continued Tuesday, with a 1-7 loss to the struggling Devils. They have now lost seven in a row and 13 of 14 (1-9-4). They’ve also allowed 5 or more goals in five straight games. They only have 2 wins in their past 25 and haven’t won two in a row all season. They also fired their head coach Dominique Ducharme on Wednesday. The Canadiens are exactly what the Capitals need to see and this game will get them back in the win column. Even without Ovechkin, they should control the game from start to finish and cruise to a nice road victory north of the border.

Jeffery’s NHL Pick: Washington Capitals -1.5 (+114)

New Jersey Devils @ St. Louis Blues – 8.00PM ET

The New Jersey Devils wrap up their road trip on Thursday night with a trip to St. Louis to take on the Blues. The Devils finally put an end to their losing streak, which stood at seven, with a dominating win over the Canadiens, 7-1. The Blues will be looking to get back on track after dropping two of their last three, which includes losses to the Flames and Jets.

Marko Nadin

The St. Louis Blues are having a solid season as they are 5th in the Western Conference with a 26-13-5 record. They have won 4 of the last 6 games but surprisingly lost 1-4 at home to the Winnipeg Jets in the last one. The Blues are 15-9 in puck line at home and 7-3-0 in the last 10 games. They are 6th in the league with 3.43 goals per game and second in PP% with 28.5. Defensively, St. Louis is 10th with 2.71 allowed goals per game. The Blues have won 9 of the last 10 games against New Jersey but lost the last one 2-4.

The New Jersey Devils are 13th in the Eastern Conference with a 16-26-5 record. The Devils were on a seven-game losing streak before defeating the Montreal Canadiens 7-1. The Devils are 11-12 in the puck line on the road. They rank 20th in the league with 2.83 goals per game while they allow 3.49 which puts them 29th. The Devils have played over the total goals margin in four of the last five games following a win.

Marko’s NHL Pick: St. Louis Blues (-275)
fanduel sign up bonus

Jeffery Thomas

The Blues had a nice groove going from the holiday break up to the All-Star break, posting a 9-4 record. They are back at home for this one, where they are 17-5-2 on the season. It was a 1-4 loss to the Winnipeg Jets in their last game, which was at home, before the break on January 29. They’ll enter the second half of the season in the playoff race, currently sitting at fourth place in the Central Division with a record of 26-13-5. The Devils on the other hand, are coming off a blowout win over the hapless Canadiens, which could serve as a much needed confidence boost. Prior to that game, they had lost seven straight (0-5-2) so they’ll try to build on that win.

They are currently sitting at last place in the Metro and have a road record of 6-15-2. The Devils will be very short-handed in this one as stat defensemen Dougie Hamilton is recovering from a broken jaw, top center Jack Hughes is in COVID protocols, and their top two goalies are still sidelined with injuries. The Blues on the other hand, are almost back to full strength with only rookie defensemen Scott Perunovich out of the lineup. That sets up for a great start to their post break season against a struggling team and I expect them to take care of business at home. This is the first meeting of these teams this year and it will be won by the Blues on the spread.

Jeffery’s NHL Pick: St. Louis Blues -1.5 (-104)

Tampa Bay Lightning @ Colorado Avalanche – 9.00PM ET

Probably the best game on Thursday’s slate, as we will see the Tampa Bay Lightning face off against the Colorado Avalanche. The Lightning have won seven of their last nine games, which includes an overtime win, 3-2, over the Sharks last time out. The Avalanche had their 10 game winning streak snapped last time out, by the Coyotes of all teams, 2-3, in a shootout.

Marko Nadin

The Colorado Avalanche are hosting the Stanley Cup champions Tampa Bay Lightning as the second- best team in the league this season with a 32-8-4 record. The Avalanche are on top of the Western Conference with 8 points lead to the Nashville Predators. Colorado was on a ten-game winning streak before losing 2-3 in shootout against the worst team in the West, the Arizona Coyotes. Colorado is the best scoring team in the league with 4.09 goals per game and ranks 8th with 35 shots per game.

The Tampa Bay Lightning are second in the Eastern Conference with a 30-10-6 record and three points shy from the leading Florida Panthers. Tampa has won 3 of the last 4 games, most recently 3-2 against San Jose in a shootout. Tampa is 7th in the league with 3.37 goals per game and 11th with 2.74 goals allowed. The Lightning have played over the total goal margin in the last six games as an underdog. They have won 7 of the last 10 games against Colorado.

Marko’s NHL Pick: Tampa Bay Lightning (-110)

Jeffery Thomas

We get a possible Stanley Cup preview in this one, as the two-time defending champion Lightning travels to Denver to face the Avalanche. This was a makeup game of a postponed one that was originally scheduled for December 18. The Lightning will try to do something that no team has done in Denver since October 26, and that is beat the Avs in regulation in Ball Arena. The Avs 18 game home winning streak was snapped with a shocking shootout loss to Arizona on February 1. Tampa Bay is 7-1-1 in their last nine games but still trail the NHL-leading Panthers by 3 points.

Colorado will use this game against the Lightning as a good measuring stick, as they feel they are a team that can dethrone the champs. They won the first matchup 4-3 in a shootout at Tampa on October 23. It’s hard for me to pick against the Avs at home as they’ve been on a historic run there. The fans get behind them and they just seem to always find a way to put up their best performances no matter the opponent. The Lightning have the championship pedigree, but this one will go to the home team who has already got one against them this year.

Jeffery’s NHL Pick: Colorado Avalanche (-110)
