Free NHL Picks Today for Thursday, April 15th, 2021
Thu 15th April 2021

We did it again yesterday with one of our best days to date, hitting 13/15  NHL picks. Today’s fixtures are looking just as promising, with 9 games set to play we have picked 5 from the lot which look like the money makers.

New Jersey Devils @ New York Rangers – 7.00 PM EDT

The Devils get another chance at their rivals today following their 3-0 defeat in Jersey on Tuesday, and while it may not seem ideal for them to be playing away from home this time, it is favourable for the Devils given their atrocious home record this season.

The shutout win marked the Rangers’ 4th for the campaign, and surprisingly, for a team that have lost 27 games this season, it was just the 2nd time the Devils have been kept goalless.

It didn’t come through a lack of shooting, as the Devils made 7 more shots for the game than the Rangers, but couldn’t get past Igor Shestkerin in net, who picked up his first 1st shutout of the year.

The scoresheet was largely unsurprising, with both Adam Fox and Pavel Buchnevich picking up double points in the victory, and Artemi Panaring notching his 43rd point with his goal in the final period.

With the win the Rangers claim the temporary bragging rights over the head to head record, leading the Devils 3-2 with 2 games in New York ahead.

Philadelphia Flyers @ Pittsburgh Penguins – 7.00 PM EDT

The Flyers lost their second straight game at the hands of the Capitals on Tuesday, the 6-1 defeat was the Flyers’ 6th loss in 8 games, and their 4th from 5 games against the Washington based team.

The two sides attempted a similar amount of shots for the game, but the Flyers were exposed defensively, conceding 3 goals while shorthanded from just 6 penalty minutes.

On top of their questionable defending, the Flyers have consistently struggled to convert their chances, over the last 16 games the Flyers have only scored >3 goals on 2 occasions, and have been kept to a goal or less 5 times.

The Penguins are rolling into this game hot off the back of their third straight victory, winning the most recent game on Sunday 5-2 away to the Devils for a 2 game sweep.

It was the final match of a 6 game road trip of which the Penguins return home with a solid 4 wins, and an impressive 29 goals scored, averaging out to 5.8 goals per game.

They came out firing on Sunday with Colton Sceviour bagging his first brace of the season in the opening 5 minutes of the match. Jake Guentzel must have felt inspired by Sceviour because he went on to score the Penguins’ 3 remaining goals, securing his 4th consecutive 20+ goal season, and his 3rd career hat trick in the NHL.

Winnipeg Jets @ Toronto Maple Leafs – 7.00 PM EDT

The Jets avoided an embarrassing clean sweep at the hands of the last place, Ottawa Senators yesterday, winning 3-2. They are now in the unfortunate position of having to play the Maple Leafs with just a day’s rest.

The Jets were determined not to let the Senators make it 2 from 2, they came out swinging this time around, making 10 extra shots for the game, and capitalized on a power play opportunity.

The Senators took the lead early, but Mark Scheifele was there to pull one back just minutes later, and after a goalless second term, Mathieu Perreault popped up with a powerplay goal to take the lead for the first time.

The Maple Leafs took a surprising defeat on home turf to the Flames on Tuesday, the match went to overtime at 2-2, but was decided just 30 seconds in when Johnny Gaudreau buried the winner.

After going down early in the first term, the Leafs were constantly chasing and never took the lead for the game.

Zach Hyman and John Tavares both finished the game with 2 points, unfortunately Auston Matthews wasn’t able to produce a point, bringing an end to his 5 game streak.

It was just the 3rd time the Maple Leafs have lost to the Flames from 9 games this season, and marks their 2nd straight loss ahead of today’s match with the Jets.

Buffalo Sabres @ Washington Capitals – 7.00 PM EDT

The Sabres narrowly missed out on a chance to make it 2 wins in a row against the Bruins on Tuesday, with the match being decided in a shootout after the game finished 2-2 in regulation time.

After taking the lead early through a goal from Colin Miller, the Sabres then lost the lead for the majority of the game. Rasmus Dahlin came up with the goods midway through the final term with the hard fought equaliser to force the overtime.

Historically, overtime situations have not been kind to the Sabres, they are 0-4 in games decided in extra time, however, they have fared better in shootouts (3-2 at the time), but the Bruins were clinical, sinking their first 2 attempts while the Sabres missed both.

The Caps notched their third straight win on Tuesday with an impressive 6-1 dismantling of a helpless Flyers outfit. The win comes just 2 days after their 8-1 blowout win against the Bruins in Boston, 14 goals scored over the 2 games while conceding just 2.

After 43 games this season, only the Avalanches’ 154 goals scored is more than the Caps’ 152, and they have only been kept to a goal or less on 4 occasions.

There were multiple brilliant performances from the Caps on Tuesday, with Conor Sheary registering his first 3 point haul of the season, and fan favourite, Alexander Ovechkin, scoring a goal and an assist.

However, all eyes were on Anthony Mantha, who made his debut for the Capitals after signing from the Red Wings in a high profile trade before the deadline.

It was a dream debut for Mantha, assisting in the Caps 2nd goal to take the lead before scoring 1 of his own in the second period.

Columbus Blue Jackets @ Dallas Stars – 8.30 PM EDT

The Blue Jackets are coming into this match desperate for a win, currently the worst performing team in the league over the last 10 games (2-7-1), the Blue Jackets have now lost 3 straight following their match on Monday against the Blackhawks.

After going down 4-3 to the Hawks 2 days earlier, the second game played out very similarly, only this time the match went to overtime, where they would ultimately lose.

The same problems plagued the Jackets in both games, taking the lead early only to then lapse defensively and concede goals in quick succession, finding themselves chasing the lead.

They once again gave up far too many penalty minutes in comparison to the Blackhawks, with a total of 26 minutes to the Blackhawks’ 2, and conceding a powerplay goal in each game.

The Jackets head to Dallas for 2 games against the Stars, who just recorded their second straight defeat, both of which came past regulation time following a 2-2 finish.

After losing in a shootout to the Predators on Sunday, the Stars returned home for a 5 game homestand, starting with a single game against the Panthers.

The Stars gave it their all against the 3rd place Panthers, coming back from a 1 goal deficit on 2 occasions to send the game to overtime, but a penalty in extra time led to the Panthers scoring the decisive goal on a powerplay.
