Ottawa Senators @ Washington Capitals – 12.30PM ET

The Ottawa Senators hit the road for just one game on Sunday afternoon when they travel to Washington to take on the Capitals. The Senators are currently on a two game losing streak, after suffering losses to the Penguins and Bruins. The Capitals have won three of their last five games, and this takes their season record to 26-14-9.

Marko Nadin

The Washington Capitals are 7th in the Eastern Conference with a 26-14-9 record. The Capitals have won 3 of the last 5 games and are coming off a 5-2 win over the Montreal Canadiens. Previously they lost to Edmonton and Columbus allowing 5 goals in both games. The Capitals are 11th in the league with 3.2 goals per game and 15th with 31.4 shots on goal per game. They are 29th in the league in PP% with 15.3%. The Capitals have played over the total goal margin in their last 4 games. The Capitals have won the last 10 games against Ottawa.

The Ottawa Senators are 14th in the Eastern Conference with a 16-24-4 record. They have lost the last two games against Pittsburgh and Boston without scoring a goal. They have won only 3 of their last 21 games. The Senators score 2.7 goals per game and allow 3.3. They are 12th in the league in allowed PP% with 81.2%. Ottawa has played under the total goal margin in 9 of their last 10 games. The Senators have won only 6 of the last 26 games against Washington and played over the total goal margin in 4 of the last 5 games against this opponent.

Marko’s NHL Pick: Washington Capitals

Tony Battalio

The Ottawa Senators come into this game with a record of 16-24-4 through their first 44 games of the season. They have been one of the worst teams in the National Hockey League this season and at this point they are virtually eliminated from the playoffs. Ottawa has been playing somewhat better as of late as they have won three of their last five, although they were shut out in their last contest by the Pittsburgh Penguins by a score of 0-2 at home. They did however, manage to finish their short three game homestead with a positive record of 2-1-0. Now they will look to get this road trip started off on the right foot against the Washington Capitals.

The previously mentioned Washington Capitals come into this game with a record of 26-14-9. As they are playing well below expectations this season in my opinion. This Capitals team is loaded with enough talent that they should be a regular Stanley Cup contender, instead they look more like a fringe playoff team at the moment. They are currently sitting in fourth place in the Metropolitan Division, three points behind the third playoff spot. Washington is currently on a one game winning streak after beating Montreal in their last game. As for the result of this game, I have the Capitals picking up another victory at home.

Tony’s NHL Pick: Washington Capitals

Jeffery Thomas

The Capitals will welcome in the Ottawa Senators on Super Bowl Sunday, after breaking a small two-game losing streak in their last game against Montreal. The 5-2 win over the Canadiens was without captain Alex Ovechkin who is expected to be back in the lineup for this one. Despite only going 3-2 in the past 5 games, their offense is averaging over 4 goals a game so it’s the defense that needs to be cleaned up. Coming into Sunday, the Caps are 4th in the Metro with 61 points. The Ottawa Senators will be on the back after losing 0-2 to the Bruins on Saturday afternoon.

Goalie Matt Murray did all he could trying to keep his guys in the game, stopping 35 shots and he’s actually stopped 77 of 80 shots in the past 2 games. Including their 0-2 loss to the Penguins on Thursday, it’s been 157 minutes and 6 seconds of scoreless hockey for their offense. The Senators are in a bad spot and struggling to get anything going on offense. Meanwhile the Capitals still have an offense that has the capability of putting in 4+ on any team in the league and that’s what I expect to see in this one, against what should be Ottawa’s backup goalie. Give me Washington to take care of business at home.

Jeffery’s NHL Pick: Washington Capitals

Buffalo Sabres @ Montreal Canadiens – 12.30PM ET

The Buffalo Sabres and Montreal Canadiens, both from the Atlantic Division, will go toe-to-toe on Sunday afternoon in the NHL. The Sabres have lost their last three games in a row, which includes defeats to the Avalanche, Golden Knights and Blue Jackets. The Canadiens have lost eight games in a row, with their last win coming in mid-January.

Marko Nadin

The Montreal Canadiens are at the bottom of the Eastern Conference with an 8-32-7 record. A coaching change has not brought anything new since they lost 1-2 against Columbus in their last game. That was the Canadiens 9th straight loss. Montreal scores 2.17 goals per game, the least in the league. They are also at the bottom with 3.92 allowed goals per game. Montreal has played over the total goals margin in their last 6 games. The home team has won 5 of the last 6 games against Buffalo.

The Buffalo Sabres are 15th in the Eastern Conference with a 14-24-8 record. They have lost the last three games, 3-4 in overtime to Columbus in the last one. Buffalo scores 2.6 goals per game while allowing 3.5. They rank 31st in the league with 34.8 shots tallied per game. Buffalo has won the last 4 games as road favorites but have lost the last 4 Sunday games. Buffalo has won the last two games against Montreal, 4-1 and 5-1.

Marko’s NHL Pick: Under 5.5 goals

Tony Battalio

This game could be ugly, or it could be an interesting game between two of the teams in the bottom half of the standings in the National Hockey League. As the Buffalo Sabres travel north of the border to take on the miserable Montreal Canadiens. The Sabres come into this game with a record of 14-24-8 through their first 46 games on the season. It is a far cry from the surprisingly fast start they had to kick off the 2021-22 season. However, reality quickly set in and now they find themselves in seventh place of the Atlantic Division, ahead of only their opponents in this one.

The Montreal Canadiens are coming into this game with a record of 8-32-7 through their first 47 games of the season. They are sitting dead last in the Atlantic Division and the worst team in the National Hockey League based on their number of victories. They are currently on a lengthy losing streak and will be playing the second game of a back to back in this one. In the first game of their back to back they were beaten at the buzzer by the Columbus Blue Jackets, as Columbus scored a game winning goal with eight seconds to go. As for the result of this game, I don’t expect it to get much better for Montreal as I have Buffalo picking up the win on the road.

Tony’s NHL Pick: Buffalo Sabres

Jeffery Thomas

The Canadiens will be right back on their home ice after a tough 1-2 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday. They gave up a goal 1:16 into the game and then showed a lot of fight and held the Jackets scoreless until 8 seconds left when they scored the game winning power play goal. Their goalie Sam Montembeault’s 40 saves was a great performance in the loss and was enough for him to get first star of the game. It was Montreal’s first time giving up less than 5 goals in the past seven games. The Buffalo Sabres will also come into this Sunday matinee game off a loss at the hands of the Blue Jackets.

It was a 3-4 overtime loss at home for them on Thursday after being up 3-1 in the third period. This is not a matchup a lot of people will be running to the TV to watch and for good reason. Both of these teams are well below .500 and aren’t really playing for anything this season. It’s a back to back for Montreal and their 4th game in 6 days so I expect tired legs on their side while Buffalo is off two days rest. That’s enough of an edge to get me on the Sabres in regulation as I see this one being a hot start for them and a comfortable win that won’t need overtime.

Jeffery’s NHL Pick: Moneyline (3-way) – Buffalo Sabres

Pittsburgh Penguins @ New Jersey Devils – 1.30PM ET

These two teams come in with similar recent results, as both the Pittsburgh Penguins and the New Jersey Devils suffered sizable losing streaks, but have recently bounced back with back-to-back wins. The Penguins had lost four in a row before winning consecutive games against the Bruins and Senators. The Devils were on a seven game losing streak, but have since fought back, beating the Canadiens and Blues in their last two games.

Marko Nadin

The New Jersey Devils are 12th in the Eastern Conference with a 17-26-5 record. After 7 straight losses, the Devils have won the last two games against Montreal and St. Louis scoring 7 goals in each of them. New Jersey allows 3.5 goals per game, fourth-most in the league. Defensively they are 8th in PP% with 82.9%. The Devils have lost 5 of the last 6 games against teams from the Eastern Conference. They have played over the total goals margin in 5 of the last 6 games following a win.

The Pittsburgh Penguins are 4th in the Eastern Conference with a 29-11-8 record. They have won the last two games after losing the previous 4. The Penguins are ranked 10th in the league with 3.29 scored goals per game and ranks third with 2.52 allowed goals. Pittsburgh is 7th in the league with 34.6 shots on goal per game. Defensively they are second in PP% with 87.1%. Pittsburgh have won the last 5 road games and the last 6 games following a two-day rest. The Penguins have won 4 of the last 5 games against the Devils.

Marko’s NHL Pick: Pittsburgh Penguins

Tony Battalio

The Pittsburgh Penguins are having a fantastic year thus far. They come into this game with a record of 29-11-8 as they are 10 games above .500 at the moment. They currently find themselves in second place in the Metropolitan Division. National Hockey League All-Star Jake Guentzel is leading the way with 23 goals and 26 assists as he and Sidney Crosby have been essential to the Penguins success so far this season. After losing three in a row to end the season’s first half, they have won their first two of the second half of the season, picking up wins over the Ottawa Senators and Boston Bruins.

The New Jersey Devils are coming into this game as one of the weaker teams in the league this season. As they currently sit in seventh place of the Metropolitan Division. They have a record of 17-26-5 through their first 48 games of the season. Bratt is leading the way for the Devils in all three major categories, as he has 43 points, 14 goals, and 29 assists. The Devils are all but eliminated from the playoffs at this point as well with only 34 games left this season. Barring a miracle, they will likely use the rest of this season as extra development for young players. As for the result of this game, I have the Pittsburgh Penguins picking up the victory on the road.

Tony’s NHL Pick: Pittsburgh Penguins

Jeffery Thomas

The Devils will look to stay hot and keep the goals pouring in as they host the Penguins on Sunday afternoon. They’ve scored 14 goals in the last two games against the Blues and Canadiens after going 0-7-0 in the seven games prior. Their playoff hopes are already down the drain, but it’s nice to see they are still fighting and can still play some great hockey. Their Metro Division rivals, the Penguins, beat the Senators 2-0 in their last game out. That extended an impressive run of hockey that has seen them go 19-4-3 since December 1.

Very few teams in the NHL have been better over that stretch and it was good enough to see the Penguins jump to second place in the Metropolitan, one point back of the first place Hurricanes. I don’t see this recent offensive eruption from the Devils being sustainable and with the Penguins seeing first place right within reach, I think we’ll see an inspired performance on the road for them. I’m taking Pittsburgh to pull the Devils back to reality in this one.

Jeffery’s NHL Pick: Pittsburgh Penguins

Colorado Avalanche @ Dallas Stars – 2.00PM ET

The final game on Sunday night’s slate in the NHL will see the Colorado Avalanche face off against the Dallas Stars. The Avalanche are back in the winner’s column after suffering a shock defeat to the Coyotes two games back, last time out they beat the Lightning, 3-2. The Stars are currently on a two game winning streak, with wins over the Predators and Jets.

Marko Nadin

The Dallas Stars are 9th in the Western Conference with a 25-18-2 record. They have won 7 of the last 9 games and are coming off a 4-3 overtime win against Winnipeg. Dallas scores 3 goals per game; as many as they allow. Dallas has played over the total goals margin in the last 4 games at home, the last 4 against a Western Conference rival and the last 5 games following a one day rest. They have played under the total goals margin in 9 of the last 11 games against Colorado. Dallas has won the last two games against the Avalanche.

The Colorado Avalanche are on top of the Western Conference with a 33-8-4 record. They have won 11 of the last 12 games losing only to the worst team in the West, the Arizona Coyotes, in that span. Colorado is second in scored goals per game with 4.07 and 17th in goals allowed with 2.89. Colorado has won the last 4 road games and has won 7 of the last 8 Sunday games. They have played over the total point margin in 5 of the last 6 games following a two-day rest.

Marko’s NHL Pick: Colorado Avalanche

Tony Battalio

The Colorado Avalanche were the preseason favorites to win the Stanley Cup. They are playing just like it as well, as they come into this game with a record of 33-8-4 through their first 45 games of the season. They are currently in first place of the Central Division as they hold a decent ten point lead over the Nashville Predators, who are in second place. They hold an even bigger lead over their opponents in this one, as they are 18 points clear of the Dallas Stars at the moment. The Avalanche will be looking to extend their impressive run of four wins in their last five with a victory in this one.
fanduel sign up bonus

The previously mentioned Dallas Stars are coming into this game with a record of 25-18-2 through their first 45 games of the season. They are currently in fifth place in the Central Division and will have a lot of work to do if they want a chance at winning the division this season. A loss in this one will almost make it nearly impossible for that to happen as they get deeper into the season so they will need to play some impressive hockey for sixty plus minutes in this one. As for the result of this game, I have the Colorado Avalanche picking up another victory on the road over Dallas.

Tony’s NHL Pick: Colorado Avalanche

Jeffery Thomas

This is the first of consecutive meetings between these teams as they will meet again on Tuesday night in Denver. Colorado has just 3 regulation losses since late November, including one November 26 against this Dallas Stars team. Colorado took down the Lightning 3-2 at home on Thursday and will be well rested for this revenge game. The Stars are coming off a 4-3 win in overtime over the Winnipeg Jets on Friday. They’ve now won seven of nine and are 2-0 since coming back from the All-Star break.

A good matchup between two teams who are playing some good hockey lately. It’s well documented how well the Avs have been at home this year, but on the road they are just a pedestrian 12-8-2, while Dallas is 17-6-1 on home ice and I think that plays into how this game will go. We’ve already seen Dallas beat Colorado at home this year and while they can win it outright I’ll take my shot at the spread as I don’t see them losing by more than 1 goal.

Jeffery’s NHL Pick: Dallas Stars +1.5
