Carolina Hurricanes @ Toronto Maple Leafs – 7.00PM ET

The Carolina Hurricanes and the Toronto Maple Leafs will be one of two games that kick off the season again after the All-Star break. The Hurricanes are currently on a four game winning streak, which takes their season record to 31-9-2. The Maple Leafs are on a five game winning streak, after beating the Islanders, Ducks, Red Wings and Devils (twice).

Marko Nadin

The Toronto Maple Leafs are currently 6th in the Eastern Conference with a 29-10-3 record and 8 points behind the leading Florida. They are 15-6-1 against the conference rivals. Toronto is fourth in the league in goals per game with 3.6 per game. Auston Matthews leads the team with 29. Mitch Marner is also playing great recently as he has 8 goals and 8 assists in the last 10 games for Toronto. Defensively, the Maple Leafs are sixth in the league with 2.64 conceded goals per game. They won the last five games averaging 5.6 goals per game.

The Carolina Hurricanes are third in the Eastern Conference with a 31-9-2 record and also 15-6-1 against Conference rivals. The Hurricanes have the fifth best offense in the league with 3.48 goals per game while they concede only 2.33 which ranks them at the top of the league. The Hurricanes have won their last 4 games and 3 of those finished under 5.5 goals. Both teams have split the last 10 games. The last time they played Carolina won 4-1.

Marko’s NHL Pick: Under 6.5 (-114)

Tony Battalio

The Carolina Hurricanes come into this game as one of the best teams in the National Hockey League so far this season. As the second half of the season is set to begin they are still a serious threat to dethrone the Tampa Bay Lightning and stop them from three peating as Stanley Cup champions. Carolina is currently 31-9-2 through their first 42 games of the season. As they are currently in the driver’s seat of the Metropolitan Division at the moment, due to them currently holding a tiebreaker lead over the New York Rangers.

The Toronto Maple Leafs come into this game sitting in third place in the Atlantic Division. Toronto is currently 29-10-3 through their first 42 games of the season. They will be looking to hold onto their current playoff spot and move up in the standings as well, as the second half of the season gets underway. Toronto is currently on a five game winning streak coming off of the All-Star break so they will be hoping that momentum carries over into the last part of the year and the playoffs. As for the result of this game however, I don’t see that happening as I have the Carolina Hurricanes getting the win in this one.

Tony’s NHL Pick: Carolina Hurricanes (+115)

Jeffery Thomas

The Leafs are on their fourth 5 game winning streak of the season, and none have extended to 6, which is something they will hope to change on Monday night against Carolina. Another notable streak on the Leafs is right winger Mitch Marner’s seven game goal streak, netting 8 goals and 8 assists in that span. Toronto’s last game before the All-Star break was a 7-1 victory over the Devils that moved their record to 29-10-3, good for 61 points. They start the second half of the season at 3rd in the Atlantic Division behind the Florida Panthers and Tampa Bay Lightning. The Canes come in on a 4 game winning streak of their own and will be excited to get the stretch run of the season started, as they are true Stanley Cup contenders.

Their 64 points rank them 4th in the league and their points percentage (.762) is best in the league. Carolina’s last game before the break was a 2-1 win over San Jose, where all-star and former Maple Leaf goalie, Frederick Andersen was 1st star of the game with 27 saves. This is a great matchup to get the regular season back going and I think both sides will come out trying to make a statement. But for me I’m going to side with the underdog, who I see as the league’s most balanced team. They have a great offense, defense, goaltending and most importantly great penalty kill. Their number #1 ranked penalty kill will do enough to keep Toronto’s lethal PP in check and their offense should be able to have success against the Leafs as well. I see this as a great value pick and I’m going to take the Canes to get a big road win north of the border.

New Jersey Devils @ Ottawa Senators – 7.00PM ET

The New Jersey Devils kick off their three game road trip on Monday night when they take on the Ottawa Senators. The Devils will be looking to turn around their current six game losing streak, which has caused their season record to drop to 15-25-5. The Senators have won three of their last six games, and this includes wins over the Blue Jackets, Sabres and Oilers.

Marko Nadin

The Ottawa Senators are 15th in the Eastern Conference with a 14-22-4. They have loaded the least games by this point since more than 10 of their games were postponed due to the COVID protocols. The Senators are 8-11-3 within the conference and are the sixth team with the most penalty minutes per game with 10.2. They are 22nd in the league with 2.76 goals per game and 25th with 3.37 conceded goals per game.

The New Jersey Devils are 15th in the Eastern Conference with a 15-25-5 record. They are 11-14-3 in Conference play and they are 1-9-0 in the last 10 games. The Devils are on a six-game losing streak with their last win coming against the Carolina Hurricanes. New Jersey was demolished in the last game, losing 1-7 to Toronto. New Jersey are 20th in the league with 2.78 goals per game and with 3.53 conceded per game are ranked 29th. They have won 6 of the last 10 games against Ottawa.

Marko’s NHL Pick: Over 6.5 (-110)

Tony Battalio

This game is going to be a battle of two of the worst teams in the National Hockey League on Monday evening. As the New Jersey Devils will travel north of the border to take on the Ottawa Senators. The Devils come into this game with a record of 15-25-5 through their first 45 games of the season. New Jersey is currently on a six game losing streak as they sit dead last in the Metropolitan Division at the moment. They are an abysmal 1-9 in their last ten games as well. They will be looking to get back on track with a win in this one.

The Ottawa Senators come into this game with a record of 14-22-4 through their first 40 games of the season. They are going to have their hands full as they are coming up on a stretch of playing 10 games in nearly the next 20 days as they will be playing virtually night in and night out for the next two weeks. Currently they are in seventh place of the Atlantic Division as they are only ahead of another Canadian team, the Montreal Canadiens. As for the result of this game, I have the New Jersey Devils picking up the victory over the Ottawa Senators on the road.

Tony’s NHL Pick: New Jersey Devils (+114)

Jeffery Thomas

COVID has impacted a lot of teams’ schedules and maybe none more than Ottawa, who are starting a 10 game in 16-day stretch following the All-Star Break. This is due to multiple postponements and for a young team who has already dealt with many injuries on the year this could be a tough stretch. With a record of 14-22-4, the Sens are only ahead of the Canadiens in the Eastern Conference. The Devils are also having a rough season as they went into the All-Star break on a 0-6-0 streak. The 1-7 defeat handed to them by the Leafs in their last game was the biggest loss of the season for them as far as margins are concerned. Zooming out to their past 10, it’s a 1-9-0 record, being outscored 24-41.

This is a battle of 2 teams with eyes on the future but I think there is a clear edge to be had in this one. The Devils are still without their top two goalies on top of their all-star and team’s second highest scorer, Jack Hughes, being placed on the COVID list after participating in the festivities in Vegas. The Devil’s also sport the second worst road record in the league so this is an Ottawa spot all around for me. In the battle of two of the league’s worst I’ll take the Ottawa Senators to pull out the win on home ice.

Jeffery’s NHL Pick: Ottawa Senators (-134)
