SportsTips’ NHL Power Rankings 2021: Week 17

SportsTips’ NHL Power Rankings 2021: Week 17
Tue 11th May 2021

The top 4 teams of each division are officially decided, with the majority of teams finished with the regular season and looking ahead to the playoffs!

Our rankings are based upon a number of factors, including recent level of play, injuries, and quality wins.

1.Colorado Avalanche

Stanley Cup Odds: +450
Record: 37-13-4
Last Week’s Ranking: 2

The Avs reclaim the top spot from the Golden Knights this week, the move is the result of a solid week which saw them win 3/4 games, including a 2-1 win away from home over the Knights yesterday.

The Avs have 2 more games to play in the regular season, both of which are set to be played on home soil against the Kings who they swept over 2 games in Los Angeles over the weekend.

2.Vegas Golden Knights

Stanley Cup Odds: +550
Record: 39-14-2
Last Week’s Ranking: 1

The Knights were close to another flawless week, they first got some revenge over the Wild with a tight overtime win on Wednesday before returning to Vegas to host the Blues over 2 games, winning both, 8-4 on aggregate.

They slip to second place only because of their loss to the Avs yesterday, it was a bitterly disappointing loss for the Knights who attempted nearly twice as many shots as the Avs and even held a 1-0 lead for 20 minutes, eventually losing 2-1.

3.Florida Panthers

Stanley Cup Odds: +1500
Record: 37-14-5
Last Week’s Ranking: 7

The Panthers jump back up the rankings this week, a well earnt move for the Florida side who boast the longest active win streak in the league (6), and the joint best record over the last 10 games (8-2-0).

At +1500 to lift the cup, the Panthers are definitely an underdog, however, with a season record of 37-14-5, the Panthers’ 79 total points places them third overall in the league, and after their recent clean sweep over last year’s Stanley Cup winners, the Lightning, they are hitting their strides ahead of playoffs.

4.Pittsburgh Penguins

Stanley Cup Odds: +1400
Record: 37-16-3
Last Week’s Ranking: 8

The Penguins got a well earnt move northbound up the ranks following a 3/3 week which saw the Pittsburgh side roll over the Flyers and the Sabres, scoring a whopping 16 goals over the 3 games, and also notched their 5th shutout of the season.

With their regular season over, the Penguins currently sit atop the table with the most goals scored in the league, and have all but won the division title, pending a near impossible result from the Caps in their final game of the season.

5.Minnesota Wild

Stanley Cup Odds: +2500
Record: 35-14-5
Last Week’s Ranking: 5

The Wild wrapped up their 7 game homestand this week, and it was an incredibly successful one, picking up points in 6 of the 7 games, claiming 10 points from a possible 14 against some tough opposition.

They finished the homestand with 2 games against the Ducks, both of which were won 4-3 in overtime, and both were highlighted by an uncharacteristically brilliant performance from Kirill Kaprizov, with the young talent picking up 4 points over the 2 games.

6.Toronto Maple Leafs

Stanley Cup Odds: +650
Record: 35-13-6
Last Week’s Ranking: 6

The Maple Leafs remain in 6th, they didn’t have much to do this week, playing just the 2 games against the Canadiens and winning both, 8-4 on aggregate. Mitch Marner was crucial in both games, scoring twice and assisting another for his 67th point of the campaign.

With a 6 point lead between them and the Oilers in second place, the Maple Leafs have already secured the division title, they now hit the road for their final 2 games of the season.

7.Tampa Bay Lightning

Stanley Cup Odds: +750
Record: 36-17-3
Last Week’s Ranking: 3

The Lightning had a week to forget, earning them a significant move down the ranks. It got off to a good start with a convincing 6-2 win over the Stars in game 1 of their 2 match set, but the scoreline was flipped in the second game as the Lightning lost 5-2.

They then hit the road to face the Panthers, who they will be facing in round 1 of the playoffs, and were completely dismantled, losing 9-1 over the two games to their bitter Florida rivals, ending their regular season on a season high 3 straight losses.

8.Carolina Hurricanes

Stanley Cup Odds: +850
Record: 36-12-8
Last Week’s Ranking: 4

The Canes were also met with a fall down the power rankings this week, the result of losing 3 of the 4 games they played. Their week played out very similarly to the Lightning, starting off with a win before losing the next 3, including a recent clean sweep away to the Predators, 8-1 on aggregate score.

With the division title secured, the Canes will be playing the Predators in the playoffs for the first time ever, making their back to back defeats to them this week all the more interesting.

9.Washington Capitals

Stanley Cup Odds: +1300
Record: 35-15-5
Last Week’s Ranking: 9

The Caps retain the 9th place this week after picking up wins over the Rangers and the Flyers, the most recent of which was a last minute 2-1 victory over the Flyers, with Conor Sheary burying the late winner.

The Caps have just one game left to play in the regular season, and it is against the Bruins today, with the match serving as a precursor to their playoff series which begins this Saturday.

10.Edmonton Oilers

Stanley Cup Odds: +2200
Record: 34-18-2
Last Week’s Ranking: 11

The Oilers were a game away from a perfect week, through a congested bunch of fixtures which saw them play 4 games the Oilers walked away with 3 wins. They won 2 games and lost another to the Canucks, and then travelled to Montreal and edged out the Canadiens 4-3 in overtime.

Unsurprisingly, Connor McDavid has been immense for the Oilers recently, as has Leon Draisaitl, the pair have contributed 32 points between them in the 6 games this month, with the two in such good form the Oilers are in great shape for the playoffs.

11.Boston Bruins

Stanley Cup Odds: +1200
Record: 33-15-7
Last Week’s Ranking: 10

The Bruins had a shaky week, starting with an overtime defeat to the Devils before bouncing back with a shutout win over the Rangers, they played the Rangers again on Saturday and lost 5-4, ending the week with a 3-2 overtime win over the Islanders thanks to a Taylor Hall brace.

12.Nashville Predators

Stanley Cup Odds: +4100
Record:31-23-2
Last Week’s Ranking: 13

With a 7-2-1 record over the last 10 games, the Predators are the second best performing team in the Central Division, and after a disappointing loss to the Blue Jackets at the start of the week the Predators bounced back in the biggest way possible, a 2 game sweep over the Canes.

Prior to the 2 game set the Preds were yet to record a win from 6 games against the Canes this season, having just beaten them in back to back games they will be filled with confidence ahead of their playoff clash.

13.New York Islanders

Stanley Cup Odds: +1500
Record: 32-17-7
Last Week’s Ranking: 12

The Islanders’ suffering continued this week, losing 3 of the 4 games they played, sporting a record of 3-4-3 over the last 10 games played. Fortunately their dip in form didn’t come any sooner, as their success earlier in the season is enough for them to qualify for the playoffs.

However, in the playoffs they meet the Penguins who have beaten them in 6 of 8 games this season, and are in great form at the moment, so the Islanders will need to sort out their woes pretty soon.

14.St Louis Blues

Stanley Cup Odds: +4100
Record: 24-20-9
Last Week’s Ranking: 14

The Blues clinched playoffs this week, but on all other fronts they had a pretty terrible week, losing 3 of the 4 games they played, including a 2 game sweep at the hands of the Knights, who they will most likely be meeting in the first round of playoffs.

15.Winnipeg Jets

Stanley Cup Odds: +2800
Record: 28-23-3
Last Week’s Ranking: 16

The inexplicably out of form Jets are not only the worst performing side in the North Division, but also in the entire league, and while they did win a game since the last power rankings, they are sporting a 1-9-0 record over the last 10 games and have a plethora of creases to iron out if they want to challenge during the playoffs.

16.Montreal Canadiens

Stanley Cup Odds: +3000
Record: 24-21-10
Last Week’s Ranking: 15

The Canadiens round out the rankings, and having lost their last 4 games straight they are basically interchangeable with the Jets, however, we are placing them last due to the fact they have the longest active losing streak, and because they will likely be playing the Maple Leafs in the playoffs.
