Post NHL Season Review of Atlantic Division, 2021-22
Tue 12th July 2022

After a thrilling season, the NHL is officially over for another year. So, the team at SportsTips thought it would be a good idea to go through every team in the Atlantic Division, and have a look at the year that was!

Boston Bruins

The Boston Bruins had a solid season this year as they found themselves in the Stanley Cup Playoffs for a short spell. They finished the regular season with a record of 51-26-5. They ended the year in fourth place of the Atlantic Division and sixth overall in the Eastern Conference.

In the Stanley Cup Playoffs they didn’t last long as they found themselves eliminated in the first round. They lost in seven games to the Carolina Hurricanes after a tough hard fought series. They lost the first two games but bounced back to tie it at two and then three before losing a huge game seven.

They were a tough team to beat at TD Garden in Boston as they finished the year with a record of 26-15 at home and 25-16 on the road. They ended the season with a plus 35 goal differential as they scored 255 and gave up 220.

Brad Marchand led the way for them as he led the team in assists and total points as well. He dished out 48 assists and ended the year with 80 total points. David Pastrnak scored 40 goals to snag the team lead while Marchand added 32.

Buffalo Sabres

It was another rough year for the Buffalo Sabres as they once again finished as one of the worst teams in the National Hockey League. Midway through the year they also traded away their star player Jack Eichel, which means all signs are pointing towards another rebuild for Buffalo.

The Sabres finished the season with a record of 32-39-11 as they ended the year 18 games below the .500 mark. Their 32 victories was good enough for fifth place and what was a very weak Atlantic Division this season. They finished 11 overall in the Eastern Conference and missed the playoffs for the 11th straight season which is a National Hockey League record.

They weren’t very competitive, even on home ice as they only managed 17 wins at home this season, finishing 17-24. As bad as they were at home, they managed to be even worse on the road as they only won 15 games and finished with a road record of 15-26.

They ended the year with a negative goal differential of 58 after scoring only 232 goals but giving up 290. Tage Thompson led the team in goals with 38 and total points with 68. While Rasmus Dahlin added 40 assists for the Sabres as well.

Detroit Red Wings

It was a long year for the Detroit Red Wings in 2021-22. They finished the season with a record of 32-40-10, which put them in sixth place in the Atlantic Division and 12th overall in the Eastern Conference. They were at least somewhat respectable at home as they won 18 of their 41 games. On the road is where they took their bumps and bruises as they only managed 14 wins.

They would end up finishing the season with a home record of 18-23 and a road record of 14-27. They ended the year with a negative goal differential of minus 88 as they only scored 230 goals while giving up 312.

They have now missed six straight Stanley Cup Playoffs which is a huge disappointment for a franchise that won a Stanley Cup in the last 15 seasons. It has been a huge fall from grace from a once historic franchise.

The Red Wings were led by Dylan Larkin in goals and total points this season. He scored 31 goals and added 38 assists to finish with 69 total points. Mortiz Seider led the team with 43 assists as well.

Florida Panthers

The Florida Panthers had a solid season but they once again came up short. They finished the regular season with a record of 58-18-6. They won the Atlantic Division and finished as the top team in the Eastern Conference as well. They went into the Stanley Cup Playoffs with home ice advantage throughout the postseason.

They were nearly impossible to beat at home as they won 34 of their 41 home games. They also did not lose a single game in overtime at home. Florida finished with 24 wins in 41 road games as well as they had a final record of 24-17. Unfortunately for the Panthers their success didn’t quite carry over into the playoffs.

They continued their success even after their coach stepped down following the Chicago Blackhawks scandal. Florida started out the year 8-0 and won ten out of their first eleven games of the season. They won their first round playoff series against the Washington Capitals but then lost in the second round to Tampa Bay in four games.

Leading the way for the Panthers in 2021-22 was Aleksander Barkov, as he scored 39 goals for the Panthers. Jonathan Huberdeau led the way with 85 assists and 115 total points as he added 30 goals as well.

Montreal Canadiens

It was an absolutely horrible year for the Montreal Canadiens. One year after making a run all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals, they finished as the worst team in the National Hockey League. They did end up with the number one pick in the 2022 National Hockey League entry draft. They finished the season with a record of 22-49-11.

They won the exact same number of home games as they did road games, as they went 11-30 both in their home venue and on the road as well. They finished with a negative goal differential of 98 as they struggled to score goals all year long, but also struggled stopping them from going into their own net.

The Canadiens finished in last place of the Atlantic Division and in dead last of the Eastern Conference as well. They were far removed from the season they had the year previously. They fired their coach on November 28th when they had a record of 6-19.

Leading the way for Montreal this season was Cole Caufield with 23 goals. Nick Suzuki added 40 assists and ended the year leading the team in total points as well with 61, as he had 21 goals as well.

Ottawa Senators

The Ottawa Senators had a rough season in 2021-22. They finished the year with a record of 32-44-7 as they were 19 games below the .500 mark. They finished in 7th place in the Atlantic Division and 13th overall in the Eastern Conference.

They were pitiful at home and somehow better on the road. They finished the year at home with a record of 15-26 and on the road with a record of 18-23. They missed their fifth straight Stanley Cup Playoffs as well this season.

Ottawa had a negative goal differential to end the year as well as they scored 227 goals and 266 goals scored against them. They were led by Brady Tkachuk and Josh Norris, as Norris led the team with 35 goals.

Tkachuk led in assists and total points as well as he dished out 37 assists and scored 30 goals as well to finish with 67 total points. They did improve from the 2020-21 season as they won ten more games than the previous season, and showing signs of improvement is the ultimate goal in the rebuild stage.

Tampa Bay Lightning

The Tampa Bay Lightning had a solid season as they looked to win their third Stanley Cup in a row. They finished the regular season with a record of 51-23-8 and won yet another Eastern Conference championship.

They were nearly unbeatable at home this past season as they finished with a 27-14 record at home. They were decent on the road as well as they finished with a record of 24-17 away from home. They finished in third place in the Atlantic Division and fifth overall in the Eastern Conference.

They had a great run through the Stanley Cup Playoffs as they went all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals before losing their first playoff series in over three years. There was no shame in losing however, as the Colorado Avalanche were the better team and favored for the majority of the season.

Leading the way for the Tampa Bay Lightning this season was Steven Stamkos with 42 goals. Victor Headman had 65 assists as well. Stamkos led with the overall points as well as alongside his 42 goals he had 54 assists. Andrei Vasilevskiy led the way in net with 39 out of Tampa Bay’s 51 wins.

Toronto Maple Leafs

The Toronto Maple Leafs put together a solid campaign but once again failed to get out of the first round. They had a solid regular season and Auston Mathews led the way with an incredible campaign himself.

They finished the regular season with a record of 54-21-7. Despite having a lead in their first round series against the Tampa Bay Lightning, they would go on to lose in the first round again in seven games. They have gone a number of years without winning a playoff series at this point.

They were a tough team to beat at home as they won 31 out of their 41 home games on the season. They were tough on the road as well as they won 23 out of their 41 road games this season.

They finished with a positive goal differential of 62 as they scored 315 and gave up 253. Auston Mathews scored 60 goals on the season, and added 46 assists as well to lead the team in total points with 106. Mitch Marner led the way with 62 assists as well.
