Popular Bet Types for NFL Betting

You’ve got a full array of NFL betting choices to explore every day during the season. Here are a few of the more useful ones you can consider when planning your wagers.

Point Spread

A point spread wager can be more intriguing than a moneyline bet. You can place a bet on a team surrounding the margin of victory or defeat. You can place a bet if you feel an underdog will keep a game closer than the sportsbook says, or you could say that the favorite will dominate the match.

A point spread bet is ideal for parlay betting. You could combine multiple spread wagers in one parlay bet to get a significant payout if you win. But the effort can be risky, especially if you have more items on the same ticket.

Alternate Point Spreads

You could also consider an alternate point spread, which entails a pick different from the original line the sportsbook produces. For example, you could place a bet on Indianapolis to beat Houston at -3.5 with a -106 payout.

But you could also bet on the Colts to win at -9.5 with a +200 payout. Other alternates include the Colts at -6.5 with a +130 payout, or the Texans at -2.5 with a +180 line. Alternate spreads are appealing if you feel the game will go in one direction, but the regular spread odds aren’t as appealing.

Halftime / Fulltime Result

A halftime / fulltime result bet involves picking a team that will be in the lead at different points. Your wager will entail two points:

  1. Who will have the lead at the end of the first half, or if there will be a tie
  2. Who has the lead at the end of regulation, or if the game ties and enters overtime

A halftime / fulltime result is ideal for games where the momentum might change throughout the game. Be aware that the bet is only valid for regulation time.

Winning Margin Bets

You can also place a bet on a team to win by a specific margin. The payouts for winning margin bets may be greater than spread bets.

You would bet on a team to win within a specific range. For example, Chicago may be a -3 favorite over Detroit with a -115 bet, but you could also bet on the Bears to win by 1-13 points with a +120 line. You could also pick the Bears to win by at least fourteen points for a +270 payout.

Score Milestone Wagers

A score milestone bet entails picking who you feel will reach a specific point threshold. You are able place a wager on one of three things:

  1. The home team reaching that point value first
  2. The visiting team getting to that value first
  3. Neither team scoring that many points

Score milestone bets can start at ten points, meaning you can bet on someone to reach ten points first. The odds will change as the point threshold rises. A team may have a -115 line to reach twenty points first, but the odds for that side to get to forty points will rise to +750.
