Are the Houston Texans Worth Your Super Bowl Bets?
Thu 17th December 2020

The Houston Texans’ Deshaun Watson has proven himself to be one of the NFL’s top quarterbacks. But his defense and the team’s weak running game have kept him from getting back in the playoffs. The Texans have a +70000 betting line to win Super Bowl LV.

The Texans don’t have a chance to get in the playoffs, nor do they have much of a shot to win the Super Bowl in the next few years. Here are some of the reasons why the Texans aren’t the best team for wagering this year.

Overworked Watson

Deshaun Watson is one of the most productive quarterbacks in the league. He has 3,500 passing yards in twelve games, and he completes close to 70 percent of his passes. He also has twenty-four touchdowns versus six interceptions, making him an efficient player. But he is also being pressured to where he has to carry much of the team’s load.

The Texans average about 85 rushing yards a game, with David Johnson covering slightly more than half that total. Watson can run and has more than 300 yards, but he has fumbled three times. He has also been sacked thirty-three times, with many of those sacks being due to him trying to set up running plays that didn’t work out well.

Watson is highly talented, and his receiving corps of Will Fuller V, Brandin Cooks, and Randall Cobb helps. But the team needs to diversity its offense if it wants to be more competitive.

A Poor Defense

The Texans have problems with their defense, with the running effort being a significant concern. The Texans give up about 150 rushing yards a game. The team has given up 1,800 rushing yards in twelve games, which is close to twice as many yards the Texans have themselves.

The defense does have a few bright spots, particularly from the team getting twenty-eight sacks. J.J. Watt has five sacks, while Whitney Mercilus has four. But the team needs extra help in resolving this concern.

How Will the Coaching Situation Go?

Romeo Crennel is currently serving as the Texans’ coach after Bill O’Brien was fired early in the season. The Texans haven’t shown much improvement since then, so it is likely Crennel will not return in 2021. The team’s four wins haven’t been of the best quality, with two of those victories coming against the last-place Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Texans will need to look around to find a quality coach, but there are too many options to consider. The team could try and go after the Kansas City Chiefs coordinator Eric Bienemy. University of Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley has also been rumored to have an interest in an NFL coaching position.

Should You Bet on the Texans?

The Houston Texans aren’t the best team to consider for your betting demands. The Texans have too many problems that will make it hard for them to be competitive.

The team is still stuck behind the Indianapolis Colts and Tennessee Titans in the AFC South, so the team will need to figure out a few plans for what they want to do in the future.

Deshaun Watson is definitely the quarterback for the team, but they will need to figure out what they can do elsewhere if they want Watson to stick around for a while.
