Portland Trail Blazers @ Miami Heat – 7:30PM ET

After a five game home stand, where they went 3-2, the Portland Trail Blazers get on the road for a four game east coast swing and start it off against the Miami Heat tonight. This is the first of the Florida back to back for Portland with Orlando waiting for them tomorrow night, so the Blazers will want to regain some momentum with a win here.

After winning three straight games, the Blazers have struggled over their last two, losing by 40 to Dallas before a narrow four point loss to Brooklyn on Tuesday where the Nets were missing multiple key players including Irving and Durant. Damian Lillard led seven different Portland players in double figures with 22 points while Enes Kanter feasted inside with 19 points, 19 boards and six assists.

One of the main issues for Portland was that Robert Covington got into foul trouble early when guarding James Harden, so that eliminated their best wing defender and a nice spot up shooter too. He will be needed going up against Jimmy Butler and the Heat, who have now lost four straight games and dropped back down to 0.500 for the first time in two weeks.

Tuesday saw the Heat struggle from the jump against a very good Phoenix side, going down by 15 at halftime and seeing that lead balloon to 23 points in the third quarter before the Suns took their foot off the gas. Kendrick Nunn enjoyed some increased playing time in the blowout, scoring a game high 25 points for the Heat.

The role players have been struggling for Miami over their four game skid, evidenced by Duncan Robinson, Kelly Olynyk and Tyler Herro combining for 13 points on 5/23 shooting. Portland’s role players have been thriving with players like Gary Trent Jr, Carmelo Anthony and Covington all having their moments to shine and contribute to successful basketball.

The Blazers are 11-6 following a loss and are 10-6 against Eastern Conference teams so far this season. The Heat are slightly favored here however we don’t see how they have the pieces to keep up with Portland. Miami has averaged just 100 points over this losing streak and Portland has the seventh best offense in the league and actually scores more points per game as a road team.

*Update: Multiple players for both teams (Portland: Gary Trent Jr and Rodney Hood (Trade), Miami: Jimmy Butler (Illness) and Kelly Olynyk (Trade)) will be out for this game. Butler is obviously the biggest loss and Portland is still the play here.*

Washington Wizards @ New York Knicks – 7:30PM ET

A rematch of Tuesday night’s action which saw the New York Knicks run away with a 131-113 victory over the Washington Wizards. New York never looked like losing, putting up 39 points in the first quarter, holding a 20 point halftime lead and then extending it to 28 after three before taking their foot off the gas late.

Normally Washington can score enough to be competitive or sneak a win, behind excellent play from Bradley Beal and Russell Westbrook. However on Tuesday, Beal had just 22 points and is now averaging 19.5 over his last two, while Wesbrook managed just 14 points on a putrid 3/14 shooting.

Julius Randle was dominant for the Knicks, putting up a game high 37 points on 54.2% shooting. The best bit was he had plenty of help, getting 21, five and five from RJ Barrett, 20 off the bench from Alec Burks and 16 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks off the bench from Mitchell Robinson, in just his second game back from a long term ankle injury.

While New York is known for their defense, being that they allow the fewest points per game, the 131 points was their second highest total for the season and there aren’t many surprises that it came against Washington, as the Wizards have the fourth worst defensive rating and allow the most points per game.

The pair combined for 0/6 from deep and the team shot 9/23 all up while the Knicks hit an incredible 16/30 (53.3%), making a big difference in the end result. New York and their stingy defense forced 16 turnovers out of the Wizards while commiting just 10 of their own, allowing them to put up an extra 13 field goal attempts in the win.

This sort of performance is unlikely to be replicated again tonight and we expect the Wizards to shoot better from the field and put up more of a fight, but New York are playing very well at the moment. Given we are in the Garden for this one again, the Knicks will be keen to end their four game home stand on a high note.

Los Angeles Clippers @ San Antonio Spurs – 8:30PM ET

The Los Angeles Clippers and San Antonio Spurs face off for the second time in as many nights and the former will be looking to make it two from two in San Antonio after their impressive 134-101 win last night. Using a 41-29 first quarter as their launch pad, the Clippers went on to win every quarter and never looked like losing.

Kawhi Leonard dominated in the blow out, putting up a line of 25 points, seven rebounds and five steals while five other LA players scored in double figures. Marcus Morris Sr has been stepping up and hitting shots of late and last night was no different, scoring 20 points on 7/12 from the field including five from deep.

The Clippers shot a blistering 17/33 (51.5) from behind the arc for the game, compared to San Antonio’s 7/22 (31.8%) performance and there is no denying that their hot shooting was what got them over the line here. The 134 points is the most they have scored over their last 10 games and they will want to replicate that tonight for the sweep.

The Spurs were led by DeMar DeRozan’s 19 points but he shot just 38.9% from the field whilst having more turnovers than assists for the game. Dejounte Murray and Keldon Johnson, who average nearly 30 points combined, managed just 14 between them and shot a combined 6/19 from the field.

The Spurs were without Lonnie Walker IV and Rudy Gay last night and while the former is expected to be back for this clash, it doesn’t seem like it will be enough for the Spurs to get over the line. It is a definite watch this space as any of the Clippers players could be rested on the second night of a back to back, however LA put up a performance last night that you can’t go against here.

*Update: Kawhi Leonard has been ruled out with a ‘foot’ injury. While this hampers the Clippers’ chances of winning, they should still have enough to pick up another win here*

Philadelphia 76ers @ Los Angeles Lakers – 10PM ET

The Philadelphia 76ers are absolutely rolling right now, going 5-1 since losing Joel Embiid and now continue their road trip against a lacklustre, star-less Los Angeles Lakers tonight. While many thought the loss of Embiid would be tough to overcome, the loss of LeBron James, joining Anthony Davis on the sidelines, is far too much for LA to handle.

The Lakers have now lost both games since James went down with his ankle injury, following up a 17 point loss in Phoenix with a 111-128 performance in New Orleans. Montrezl Harrell top scored for LA with 18 points while Kyle Kuzma had a good all around game with 16 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists.

Unfortunately the Lakers just don’t have enough composure and depth to handle losing their two superstars and the Sixers should be looking to take advantage. While LA’s defensive rating has been slipping, Philly’s has been improving and seen them come into second overall, just behind the Lakers for the season.

The Sixers haven’t allowed an opponent to reach 110 points in their last eight games and have kept four to 100 or under since losing Embiid. Tuesday was no different, beating the Warriors 108-98. Tobias Harris continues to flourish as the number one option, playing at an All-NBA level for the Sixers. He put up game highs of 25 points and 13 rebounds, shooting 50% from the field and adding four assists as well.

Missing star players is a true test of a team’s depth and Philly have shown that they have built a roster that can withstand the injury bug. Unfortunately for the Lakers they are extremely top heavy and when they are missing the top, the bottom end can’t keep up. This should be a relatively easy game for the Sixers to jump to an early lead and put the game away.

Golden State Warriors @ Sacramento Kings – 10PM ET

We have a clash between Pacific Division and California rivals as the Golden State Warriors are on the road for just one game, against the Sacramento Kings. Tuesday night saw the Warriors lose their second straight game and drop to just 1-4 without Steph Curry for the season. In what initially might seem like an easier game, the Kings looked impressive last night in a win over Atlanta and will want to carry that over here.

After being tied at halftime, Sacramento used a 28-17 third quarter to give themselves a big enough lead to hold on for the 110-108 win. That win now puts the Kings to 4-1 since losing Marvin Bagley as Tyrese Halliburton has stepped up into the starting lineup and flourished. The rookie had 17 points, seven assists and five rebounds last night but the game ball went to De’Aaron Fox who had a game high 37 points on 65% shooting. Although they coughed up the ball 16 times, Sacramento made the most of their extra opportunities, going 20-22 from the line in a decisive and important win.

Despite holding Atlanta to just 17 in the third, the Kings still gave up 108 for the game and their defense has obviously been an issue for them this season. They give up the second most points per game and actually allow more when playing at home, something the Warriors should be looking to capitalize on without Curry in the lineup.

Despite trade rumours circulating around his name, Kelly Oubre Jr was the clear standout player for Golden State in their 98-108 loss on Tuesday. Oubre had 24 points and 10 rebounds, shooting 57.1% from the field and having no turnovers for the game. Looking at other positives out of that game is that five different Warriors players scored in double figures and they held the Sixers to just 7/24 shooting from deep.

Sacramento may be 4-1 since Bagley left the lineup but they are just 2-7 on the second night of back to backs this season. Golden State have had an extra night to prepare and with news breaking shortly after the game that Cory Joseph, who is the main backup point guard and played over 20 minutes last night, has been traded, the Kings will be thin in the rotation.
