NBA Game Day 05/03: The Clippers clips the Lakers slim play-off hopes and more
Wed 6th March 2019

What a crazy day of NBA games yesterday was! Filled with plenty of upsets and last minute mistakes and winners. Most games were decided by 6 points or less, Sportstips.com has wrapped it all up to cover all the best action that happened yesterday.

Los Angeles Lakers vs Los Angeles Clippers

The game of the night did not disappoint, it was a nail biter pretty much all game until the last few minutes or so. Both teams played with great defensive intensity, but the Lakers lack of defensive centers really showed last night with the Clippers scoring a majority of their buckets inside the paint.

Pat Beverley set the tone early scoring the first 9 points for the Clippers, Rondo was looking great and up for it as well for a game against his old coach. Our player to watch yesterday though was simply unstoppable as the game kept going. Gallinari was scoring in and out and ended up with 23 points to secure the win for the Clippers.

LeBron played 42 minutes for the game, but again just constantly had a lapse in defence letting players easily blowing by or not pressuring the three point shooter. This definitely signals the end of the Lakers hopes to make the playoffs and we would not be surprised if they shut down LeBron and the rest of their star players to rest till the end of the season.

Clippers win 113 – 105

Top Scorer: LeBron James – 27 Points

Top Assists: Rajon Rondo – 12 Assists

Top Rebounds: Montrezl Harrell – 11 Rebounds

SPORTSTIPS TRIPLE DOUBLE X FACTOR: Rajon Rondo 24 Points, 12 Assists, 10 Rebounds

San Antonio Spurs v Denver Nuggets

The Spurs won in thrilling fashion against the 2nd seeded Denver Nuggets to continue their strong win streak. They started off strong finishing the 1st quarter more than 10 points up with LaMarcus Aldridge punishing Jokic’s defense. Jokic was quick to reply though, and it was definitely the battle that we expected to see.

The win condition was set on the back court though with both teams squaring even on the front. The nuggets back court could just not get going though while DeMar Derozan looking at his best since a while, ending the game with 24 points.

We’re not sure what coach Mike Malone told the Jamal Murray and Malik Beasley in the locker room at half time, perhaps it was Michaels secret stuff that he gave them, but they both came out hot and cut the lead down to a measley 2 point by the middle of the 4th quarter.

With 12 seconds left on the clock, the Nuggets fouled Rudy Gay after a failed three point attempt by Murray to take the lead, with the score being 103 Nuggets – 104 Spurs. He misses both free throws giving another chance for the Nuggets to take the win, but Pop played the perfect defensive scheme denying an easy inbound as it was forced to be picked up at half court leading to a bad shot.

The Spurs have secured them another win to keep the 8th seed secure for now while the Nuggets lost another a chance to claim the 1st seed in the west.

Spurs Win 104 – 103

Top Scorer: Jamal Muray – 25 Points

Top Assists: Derrick White – 9 Assists

Top Rebounds: Paul Millsap – 11 Rebounds

Phoenix Suns v Milwaukee Bucks

The upset of the day, the Suns win against the bucks means that they have swept the season series against the NBA Eastern Conference leaders in the Milwaukee Bucks 2 – 0! The Bucks started the game coming out strong, winning the 1st quarter by more than 10 points. It looked to be an easy for win them with Brogdon hitting shots from everywhere.

Things changed really quickly though as the Suns ran them out of the building in the 2nd quarter. Kelly Oubre Jr could not be stopped as he repeatedly went to the line, ending the game with 12 made free throws out of his 27 points. Khris Middleton was a black hole all game though, hitting only 1 of his 13 shots amassing a negative 18 on the plus and minus box score.

The most impressive facet of the game though was the 1st Pick of the 2018 Draft, DeAndre Ayton. He was tasked with guarding Giannis all game and delivered the goods. For a big man better known for his offense, the improvement in defense he’s had for the season has been extremely impressive.

For the playoff guaranteed bucks, the loss shouldn’t hurt too much, but they shouldn’t be complacent as the Raptors are now only 2 game behind them for the 1st seed.

Suns Win 114 – 105

Top Scorer: Kelly Oubre Jr – 27 Points

Top Assists: Devin Booker – 7 Assists

Top Rebounds: TIED at 13, Kelly Oubre Jr & Giannis Antentokounmpo

Utah Jazz vs New Orleans Pelicans

We were sure this was going to be an easy win for the Jazz, but just like the rest of the league we underestimated the strength of the Pelicans even without Anthony Davis. While the Pelicans struggled in the 1st quarter as usual, they clawed back for the win at the end, let’s take a deeper look at the box score.

The most surprising performance without a doubt would be Julius Randle scoring 30 points against the defensive player of the year Rudy Gobert. The big man looked unstoppable as he posted up Gobert for easy buckets. Donovan Mitchell went back into his slump, making 8 out of his 24 buckets and going 1 for 9 from downtown. The Jazz need to figure out the line up quickly before the playoffs approaches, as with both Rubio and Mitchell in the line-up the offense could not get going properly to close the game off. Joe Ingles is still looking great playing point forward as he got his team easy shots leading the game in assists with 11.

Jrue Holiday is still remind the rest of the league that his playoff performances last year was no fluke with his great defense and scoring, hitting 30 points for the game that lead to the win for the Pelicans. The Jazz drop a game and with that the Clippers can look to eclipse them to the sixth seed if they win their next one.

Pelicans Win 115 – 112

Top Scorer: TIED 30 Points, Julius Randle & Jrue Holiday

Top Assists: Joe Ingles – 11 Assists

Top Rebounds: Rudy Gobert – 19 Rebounds.
