Lane Thomas will be looking to extend his 19-game on-base streak as the Washington Nationals (20-28) host the San Diego Padres (22-26) at Nationals Park on Wednesday.
The Padres took Tuesday’s series opener 7-4. Yu Darvish went six innings, allowing three runs on six hits, to get the win, and Josh Hader earned his 12th save with a scoreless ninth.
Juan Soto was 3 for 4 with a home run and two runs in the win. Jake Cronenworth added a home run and two RBIs, walking three times. Thomas went 2 for 4 with a solo home run for the Nationals.
ON THE MOUND
Ryan Weathers (1-2, 3.42 ERA) is in line for the start for San Diego. The left-hander allowed four runs over 5.2 innings in his last start, a 4-0 road defeat against the Dodgers on May 14. He was charged with the loss, giving up three hits while striking out three and walking four.
Right-hander Trevor Williams (1-2, 4.26 ERA) will toe the rubber for Washington. It’s his first appearance of the season against the Padres. Williams made one appearance against the Padres in 2022, throwing two innings for the Mets in a 4-1 home defeat on July 22.
He gave up one hit and walked one, while striking out one. In his last start on Thursday, Williams took the loss on the road against the Marlins. He threw six innings and gave up three runs on five hits, striking out five and walking one in the 5-3 defeat.
