Two of the lowest-scoring lineups in baseball are set to square off at American Family Field on Friday as the Milwaukee Brewers (34-29) host the Oakland Athletics (14-50) to open a three-game Interleague series.
The Athletics are kicking off the final series of their nine-game road trip. They won two out of three in their last series against the Pirates, taking the finale 9-5 on Wednesday at PNC Park. Seth Brown was 3 for 4 with a double, two runs, and one RBI.
Ryan Noda added a home run, two runs, and two RBIs. The Brewers are amid a six-game homestand. They won two of three against the Orioles in their last series, dropping the finale 6-3 on Thursday at American Family Field.
William Contreras went 2 for 4 with a double and one run. The teams are meeting for the first time since August 1, 2019, when the Athletics finished off a 2-1 series win with a 5-3 victory at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum.
ON THE MOUND
Luis Medina (0-5, 8.19 ERA) is set for the start for Oakland. The right-hander allowed six runs over two innings in his last start, a 12-1 road defeat against the Marlins on Saturday. He took the loss, scattering six hits while striking out two and walking four.
Righty Adrian Houser (2-1, 3.45 ERA) will toe the rubber for Milwaukee. In his last start on Sunday, Houser got the win on the road against the Reds. He threw seven innings and gave up one run on six hits, striking out two, in the 5-1 triumph.
AT THE PLATE
The Oakland offense is averaging 3.6 runs per game for the season, the second lowest in MLB, with a slash line of .225/.305/.359. Noda leads the team in OPS at .888. The first baseman is slashing .255/.415/.473 with seven home runs, 23 RBIs, and 32 runs over 59 games.
Over the last five games, however, Oakland has averaged 6.0 runs a game while slashing better across the board (.298/.371/.459). Against righties like Houser this season, the A’s have a .650 OPS, the third lowest in the league.
Noda also is the team’s most productive hitter against right-handers with a .903 OPS in 147 at-bats. Milwaukee is slashing .231/.308/.382 for the season and averaging 4.1 runs per game, the second lowest in the National League. Rowdy Tellez leads the team with a .768 OPS.
The first baseman has 12 home runs, 28 RBIs, and 21 runs scored with a slash line of .233/.313/.455.
The Brew Crew have a .710 OPS against right-handers in 2023. With a .812 OPS over 156 at-bats, Tellez also has been their best hitter against right-handers.
HOME AND AWAY
Oakland is 7-26 in away games in 2023, scoring 4.0 runs per game while allowing 7.1 runs. Milwaukee has gone 18-13 at home this season, averaging 4.4 runs per game while surrendering 4.2.
Milwaukee is 3-2 in five games at American Family Field between the teams despite an average scoreline favoring Oakland (4.6-3.2).
STANDINGS UPDATE
The Athletics are fifth in the AL West, 27 games behind the division-leading Rangers. The Brewers lead the NL Central by one game over the Pirates.
