The Arizona Diamondbacks (30-23), one of the best lineups in the NL, are set to host the Colorado Rockies (24-30) at Chase Field on Monday for the opener of a four-game series.
The Rockies are kicking off a seven-game road trip after wrapping up a productive seven-game homestand (5-2). They won two out of three in their last series against the Mets, taking the finale 11-10 on Sunday at Coors Field.
Ryan McMahon was 3 for 4 with a home run and a double. He scored three runs and had five RBIs. Randal Grichuk went 3 for 5 with two doubles and two RBIs. The Diamondbacks are in the midst of a 10-game homestand.
They lost two of three against the Red Sox in their last series, taking the finale 4-2 on Sunday at Chase Field. Geraldo Perdomo went 1 for 3 with a solo home run.
HEAD-TO-HEAD
The Diamondbacks have won two of three in the season series between the NL West rivals, although they suffered a 12-4 defeat in their last meeting on April 30 at Coors Field. Austin Gomber got the win, giving up one run on three hits over six innings.
ON THE MOUND
Karl Kauffmann (0-2, 9.35 ERA) is set to get the start for Colorado. The RHP allowed five runs over 4.1 innings in his last start, a 10-2 home defeat against the Marlins on Wednesday. He took the loss, scattering six hits while striking out two and walking three.
Left-hander Tommy Henry (2-1, 4.68 ERA) is on the mound for Arizona. He has made one prior start against the Rockies this season, giving up four runs over 5.1 innings in an 11-4 road win on April 29.
He gave up seven hits and walked one, while striking out three in the win. In his last appearance on Saturday, Henry pitched in relief at home against the Red Sox. He threw 1.1 scoreless innings and gave up one hit in the 2-1 defeat.
AT THE PLATE
The Colorado offense is averaging 4.6 runs per game for the season, with a slash line of .259/.320/.404. Elias Diaz leads the team in OPS at .903. The catcher is slashing .331/.387/.517 with six home runs, 27 RBIs, and 21 runs over 46 games.
Over the last five games, however, Colorado has averaged 6.4 runs a game while performing better across the board (.312/.380/.543). Against southpaws like Henry this season, the Rockies have a .671 OPS, fifth lowest in the league.
C.J. Cron is the team’s most productive hitter against left-handers with a .829 OPS in 41 at-bats. Arizona is slashing .260/.325/.430 for the season and averaging 5.0 runs per game, third best in the NL. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. leads the team with a .915 OPS.
The left fielder has eight home runs, 28 RBIs, and 29 runs scored with a slash line of .310/.363/.552. Arizona is averaging only 3.2 runs per game in the last five with their slash line slipping across the board (.210/.263/.371).
The D-backs have a .765 OPS against right-handers in 2023, fifth highest in the league. With a .935 OPS over 119 at-bats, Gurriel Jr. also has been their best hitter against right-handers.
HOME AND AWAY
Colorado is on a three-game losing streak away from Coors Field, bringing their record to 9-16 in 2023. The Rockies have scored 3.8 runs per game away from home, while allowing 4.6 runs. Arizona has gone 15-12 at home this season, averaging 4.8 runs per game while surrendering 4.3.
In the last 10 games between the teams at Chase Field, each club has won five, though Arizona has the scoring advantage with an average final margin of 4.2-3.2.
