SportsTips’ MLB Power Rankings 2021: Week 14

SportsTips’ MLB Power Rankings 2021: Week 14
Tue 6th July 2021

As we approach the halfway point of the MLB season, we’re only one week away from the 2021 All-Star break! As it stands, the Los Angeles Dodgers are the No. 1 team on the SportsTips’ MLB Power Rankings after 13 weeks of baseball!

Here’s where all 30 MLB teams stand heading into Week 14 of the 2021 MLB season:

1. Los Angeles Dodgers

World Series Championship Odds: +400
Current Record: 53-31
Previous Rankings: 4

Los Angeles swept San Francisco at home early in Week 13 before extending the active winning streak to nine consecutive games with a four game sweep over the Nationals in Washington. The Dodgers were the MLB’s only undefeated team in Week 13 and they are now just half game behind the Giants for the No. 1 spot in the NL West.

Since Chicago gave Los Angeles their first no-hit game since 2015, Los Angeles have won their past nine consecutive games, outscoring their opponents 48-19 in that time. As we approach the halfway mark of the season the reigning champions are still the team to beat.

2. San Francisco Giants

World Series Championship Odds: +1600
Current Record: 53-30
Previous Rankings: 1

After being swept in their two game series by the Dodgers in Los Angeles, San Francisco dropped the opening match of their four game series against the Diamondbacks in Arizona, giving them an 0-3 Week 13 record and an active four game losing streak. However, the Giants won their final three games last week to return to the winners list and claim a 3-1 series victory on the road.

San Francisco were the first 50 win team of the year, they have hit the most home runs in baseball and their 3.24 team ERA is the second best of any MLB pitching staff. The Giants are truly the biggest surprise from the first half of the 2021 MLB season.

3. Boston Red Sox

World Series Championship Odds: +1400
Current Record: 53-32
Previous Rankings: 5

The Boston Red Sox have extended their lead on top of the AL East thanks to a 6-1 record from their seven games last week. Boston swept Kansas City at Fenway Park early in Week 13 before winning two of their three games against the A’s in Oakland. The Red Sox are one win ahead of the Astros for the No. 1 record in American League and their 26-15 record on the road is the best in baseball.

As much as Boston have been praised for their potent offense in 2021, their pitching staff looks to have returned to form after a terrible start to the summer. The Red Sox have given up just 3.0 runs per game across their last 10 matches and they own a 9-1 record in that time.

4. Houston Astros

World Series Championship Odds: +650
Current Record: 52-33
Previous Rankings: 2

In what was another strange result for the Astros in 2021, Houston kicked off Week 13 by being swept by Baltimore at home in their three game series. Thankfully for the Astros, they returned to form in the back half of the week, sweeping the Indians in Cleveland to salvage a 4-3 record. Houston also brought up their 50th win of the season last week and they are only trailing Boston for the best record in the American League.

Now a two time All-Star, Carlos Correa hit at .444 in the series against Cleveland, giving him a .298/.398/.529 slash line for the season, to go along with 16 homers and 52 RBIs.

5. Milwaukee Brewers

World Series Championship Odds: +1500
Current Record: 51-34
Previous Rankings: 9

Although they had their 11 game winning streak brought to an end on Sunday, Milwaukee’s 6-1 record in Week 13 has extended their lead on top of the NL Central. The Brewers began their week by sweeping the Cubs in Milwaukee before closing things out with three wins from their four games against the Pirates in Pittsburgh.

Since trading for Willy Adames on May 21st and welcoming back Christian Yelich from a stint on the IL, the Brewers have scored 218 runs, the most of any team in the NL. The offensive improvements combined with the sixth best pitching staff in baseball (3.52 team ERA) have made Milwaukee a contender at the halfway mark of the 2021 MLB season.

6. San Diego Padres

World Series Championship Odds: +900
Current Record: 50-36
Previous Rankings: 6

After winning two of their three games against the Reds in Cincinnati, San Diego dropped two of their three games against the Phillies in Philadelphia, giving them a 3-3 Week 13 record. Given the Giants surprising rise in 2021, the Padres would be disappointed with their third place ranking in the NL West, as they are currently four and a half games off the pace.

Although Dinelson Lamet and Blake Snell have underperformed throughout the first half of the season, San Diego would been over the moon with the production of the recently acquired Yu Darvish, who is about to enter his first All-Star game since 2017 after starting the season with a 2.65 ERA through 17 starts.

7. Chicago White Sox

World Series Championship Odds: +800
Current Record: 49-34
Previous Rankings: 7

The White Sox have extended their lead in the AL Central after recording four wins from their six games against a pair of division rivals. Chicago began Week 13 with a four game winning streak as they swept Minnesota and won their first game against Detroit. However, the Tigers won the final two games of the weekend to complete an upset 2-1 series victory. The White Sox six game lead in the AL Central in their biggest of the season.

Chicago have been heavily reliant on the strength of their pitching staff throughout the year, however they have recently received an increase in offensive output from two young prospects. Gavin Sheets has two home runs and eight RBIs in his last six games, and Jake Burger has hit at .363 to start his MLB career.

8. Tampa Bay Rays

World Series Championship Odds: +1400
Current Record: 48-36
Previous Rankings: 3

The Rays rough start to the summer has continued in Week 13, winning just one of their five games against the Nationals and Blue Jays. Tampa Bay dropped their opening four games last week before avoiding a second consecutive sweep with a 5-1 victory over Toronto on Sunday. The Rays are now four and a half games behind the division and AL leading Boston Red Sox.

Tampa Bay are 5-12 since reaching a season high 19 games above .500, as Tyler Glasnow’s extended stay on the IL has strained an already thin Rays bullpen.

9. Oakland Athletics

World Series Championship Odds: +1800
Current Record: 49-37
Previous Rankings: 8

The A’s managed just a 2-4 record from their six home games last week, recording a pair of 1-2 series losses against the Rangers and Red Sox. Their two losses to Boston were both by just one run as they are now three and a half games behind Houston in the AL West. Oakland will close out the first half of the season with a three game series in Houston and another three game set in Texas.

As much as the A’s have exceeded their preseason expectations throughout the first half of the regular season, they could consider themselves quite unlucky with their lack of representation at the upcoming All-Star game, as Chris Bassitt, Sean Manaea and Mark Canha were not named.

10. New York Mets

World Series Championship Odds: +900
Current Record: 43-37
Previous Rankings: 11

After beginning Week 13 with a 1-3 record against a pair of division rivals (Nationals and Braves), the Mets salvaged a respectable 3-4 record thanks to two wins from their three games against the Yankees in the first instalment of this years Subway Series between the two crosstown rivals. As much as they will take pride out of being the best team in New York, the Mets have been a .500 team to start the summer, leaving the door ajar for Atlanta and Washington in the NL East.

Although Jacob deGrom still has a sub one ERA, the two time NL Cy Young recipient has conceded five earned runs in his last two starts. To put that into perspective, he had allowed just four earned runs in his prior 12 starts.

11. Toronto Blue Jays

World Series Championship Odds: +2400
Current Record: 43-39
Previous Rankings: 10

Although they defeated them twice last week, the third placed Toronto Blue Jays failed to make up any significant ground on the second placed Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East, winning three of their six Week 13 games. After dropping two of their three games against the Mariners, the Blue Jays won two of their three games against the Rays.

The Blue Jays have submitted a proposal to the Canadien government about returning to Toronto for their home games in the second half of the season. If successful, this could be big for the Blue Jays, who own a 19-20 record at ‘home’ this year.

12. Seattle Mariners

World Series Championship Odds: +20000
Current Record: 45-40
Previous Rankings: 18

As a result of their 4-2 Week 13 record, the Seattle Mariners are 11-4 across their last 15 games and they are only three and a half games behind the A’s for second place in the AL West. Seattle recorded a pair of 2-1 series victories against the Blue Jays on the road and the Rangers at home.

Although the Mariners are five games above .500, they rank 22nd in the league for run differential this season, with a -42 differential. Seattle are the masters of winning ugly and even though we don’t believe that their success is sustainable, you cannot fault what they’ve done through the first half of the season.

13. Cincinnati Reds

World Series Championship Odds: +6000
Current Record: 43-40
Previous Rankings: 16

A 5-2 week for the Reds combined with an 0-6 week for the Cubs has seen Cincinnati jump into second place in the NL Central for the first time since April. The Reds had a 2-2 record following their game against the Phillies and their series against the Padres, before they fittingly closed out Week 13 with a three game sweep against the Cubs.

Cincinnati are seven games behind the division leading Milwaukee Brewers, whom they will now face in seven of their next 10 games, giving them a chance to make up some more ground in the NL Central.

14. Los Angeles Angels

World Series Championship Odds: +7000
Current Record: 42-41
Previous Rankings: 20

After winning two of their three games against the Yankees in New York, the Angels swept the lowly Orioles in Los Angeles to give themselves a 5-1 record from their six Week 13 games. Los Angeles are now nine games off the pace in the AL West as they prepare to welcome back Mike Trout in the second half of the season.

However even in Trout’s absence, offensive firepower has not been an issue for the Angels. Although it was not his best week with the ball (seven runs allowed in just 0.2 innings), Shohei Ohtani made up for it with the bat, clubbing six home runs last week to give him a league high 31 homers for the season.

15. Washington Nationals

World Series Championship Odds: +5000
Current Record: 40-42
Previous Rankings: 15

The Nationals kicked off Week 13 by sweeping the Rays in Washington, however they then ran into a dominant Dodgers outfit who handed out a four game sweep of their own in the nation’s capital. Despite their 3-4 record, Washington still owns a 14-7 record from their last 21 games.

Shortly after being named the NL Player of the Month, Kyle Schwarber suffered a hamstring injury over the weekend. Schwarber hit 16 home runs in an 18 game span in June, as the Nationals earned a 19-9 record for the month.

16. Atlanta Braves

World Series Championship Odds: +3300
Current Record: 41-42
Previous Rankings: 17

Atlanta recorded back to back 2-1 series victories at home in Week 13, defeating New York and Miami twice respectively. The Braves highlight last week was unquestionable their 18 run victory over the Mets on Wednesday. Atlanta won the match 20-2 as Ozzie Albies recorded four runs from five hits with seven RBIs in six at bats.

The Braves have a great opportunity to pass the .500 mark for the first time this season in Week 14, currently one game under with six games against the Pirates and Marlins on the horizon.

17. Chicago Cubs

World Series Championship Odds: +4600
Current Record: 42-42
Previous Rankings: 12

As a result of being swept by the Brewers in Milwaukee and the Reds in Cincinnati, the Chicago Cubs were our only winless team in Week 13. The six losses has extended Chicago’s losing streak to nine consecutive games and they have subsequently slipped to third in the NL Central, a game and a half behind Cincinnati and eight and half games behind the division leading Milwaukee Brewers.

The Cubs current nine game losing streak is their equal second longest since the turn of the century and they are now at a .500 record for the first time since mid May. Chicago’s lineup has gone cold recently, scoring just 2.44 runs per game across their past nine consecutive losses.

18. New York Yankees

World Series Championship Odds: +2000
Current Record: 42-41
Previous Rankings: 14

In what was another lacklustre week for the Bronx Bombers, New York managed just two wins from their six Week 13 games. The Yankees recorded a pair of 1-2 series losses at home against the Angels and Mets last week.

Although their lineup features Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, DJ LeMahieu and Gleyber Torres, the Yankees currently rank dead last in the American League for runs scored as we approach the midway point of the 2021 MLB season. And if their offensive struggles aren’t enough cause for concern, Aroldis Chapman has continued to struggle as a closer at the mound. Chapman has now conceded 14 earned runs over his last nine appearances, throwing just 5.2 innings in that time.

19. Cleveland Indians

World Series Championship Odds: +4800
Current Record: 42-39
Previous Rankings: 13

Cleveland has a 4-11 record from their past 15 games after dropping six of their seven matches in Week 13. The Indians defeated the Tigers in their first outing last week, however they then dropped their next six games against Detroit and Houston, giving them their longest losing streak of the season (six games).

fanduel sign up bonus

Cleveland are still second in the AL Central due to the inept quality of opponents at the bottom of their division (Minnesota, Kansas City and Detroit), whom they own a 17-11 record against this year.

20. Philadelphia Phillies

World Series Championship Odds: +6000
Current Record: 39-42
Previous Rankings: 19

The Phillies earned a 3-3, .500 Week 13 record from their games against the Reds, Marlins and Padres. Although they are sitting in fourth place with a three game below .500 record, Philadelphia are only four and half games back of the division Mets in the weak NL East.

On a positive note for the Phillies, Zack Wheeler has deservedly earned his first All-Star selection after posting a 2.05 ERA and 0.94 WHIP in 17 starts this season. In his latest outing, Wheeler shut out the Padres for 7.2  innings, allowing just four hits with nine strikeouts in a game that the Phillies won 4-3.

21. St Louis Cardinals

World Series Championship Odds: +6000
Current Record: 41-44
Previous Rankings: 23

As a result of their 4-3 record last week, St Louis now has a 5-8 record from their past 13 games, all of which came against below .500 opponents. The Cardinals did manage to sweep the Diamondbacks in Arizona last week before they were defeated by the Rockies in Colorado in three of their four clashes.

Jack Flaherty’s oblique injury at the start of the summer will be looked back on as the turning point for the preseason NL Central favorites, as the now fourth placed Cardinals owned a 10-17 record in June following their ace landing on the IL.

22. Detroit Tigers

World Series Championship Odds: +50000
Current Record: 38-46
Previous Rankings: 22

The Tigers won four of their six games against a pair of division rivals last week, collecting a pair of 2-1 series victories against the second placed Indians and first placed White Sox. Detroit has moved into third place in the AL Central, two and half games ahead of Kansas City and five and a half games behind Cleveland.

It is unlikely that the Tigers will finish above .500 in 2021, however of all the teams that have struggled this season, Detroit looks to be the one showing the best signs of development and progression. Especially at the mound, as Casey Mize and Tarik Skubal have shown glimpses of what could potentially be a dangerous one-two punch with the ball.

23. Colorado Rockies

World Series Championship Odds: +50000
Current Record: 37-48
Previous Rankings: 26

Death, taxes and the Rockies winning at home. Colorado posted a 6-1 record from their seven games at Coors Field last week, giving them a more than impressive 31-17 record at home this season. The Rockies swept the Pirates before winning three of their four games against the Cardinals across the weekend.

Elias Diaz hit a three run walk-off homer to beat St Louis on Thursday before he again walked things off on Sunday with an RBI single. Colorado will now head out on a six game road trip, looking to improve on their disastrous 6-31 record on the road.

24. Miami Marlins

World Series Championship Odds: +20000
Current Record: 35-47
Previous Rankings: 24

The Marlins posted a 2-3 record against two division rivals in Week 13, splitting their two game set against the Phillies in Philadelphia before winning just one of their three games against the Braves in Atlanta.

It continues to amaze us how Miami are a season high 12 games below .500 and last in the NL East despite having the best run differential in their division. However, it does make sense when considering that the Marlins added a further three one run losses to their tally last week, giving them 19 for the season.

25. Texas Rangers

World Series Championship Odds: +50000
Current Record: 33-51
Previous Rankings: 25

After taking two games off the A’s in Oakland and one game off the Mariners in Seattle, the Rangers finished Week 13 with a respectable 3-3 record from six games on the road.

Although they sit on the bottom of the AL West, Texas will send three All-Stars to the Midsummer Classic with Joey Gallo, Kyle Gibson and Adolis Garcia all representing the Rangers. Texas signed Adolis Garcia from St Louis for essentially nothing, now he is an All-Star with 20 home runs and 58 RBIs as we approach the halfway point of the season

26. Kansas City Royals

World Series Championship Odds: +20000
Current Record: 35-48
Previous Rankings: 27

After dropping their opening three games of Week 13 to the Red Sox in Boston, Kansas City brought an end to their nine game losing streak with a win against Minnesota at home on Friday. The Royals won a second game against the Twins on Saturday, giving them a 2-1 series victory and a 2-5 record last week.

The Royals have started July with a 2-2 record after going 9-21 in June. Their 5.02 team ERA is the 27th in the league and their -81 run differential is also good for the 27th in baseball.

27. Minnesota Twins

World Series Championship Odds: +13000
Current Record: 34-48
Previous Rankings: 21

Minnesota have once again found themselves on the bottom of the AL Central after winning just one of their six games against a pair of division rivals. The Twins were swept by the White Sox in Chicago before they won one of their three games against the Royals in Kansas City.

Kenta Maeda has taken the biggest step back among starting pitchers in 2021, however the entire pitching staff ranks 28th in team ERA with a 5.04 average. Not even vaguely similar to their elite form at the mound in 2020.

28. Baltimore Orioles

World Series Championship Odds: +50000
Current Record: 27-57
Previous Rankings: 29

Although they still hold the worst record in the American League, Baltimore’s 3-3, .500 week was good enough to see them improve on the SportsTips’ MLB Power Rankings ahead of Week 14. The Orioles pulled off one of the upsets of the season early in Week 13, sweeping the Astros in Houston. Unfortunately, Baltimore soon snapped back to reality as they were then swept by the Angels in Los Angeles.

fanduel sign up bonus

Individually it was a good week for the O’s, as Ryan Mountcastle was named the AL Rookie of the Month for June after batting .327/.382/.634 with nine home runs, and Cedric Mullins was officially named in his first All-Star Game after hitting at .318/.385/.547 with 15 home runs and 32 RBIs so far this season.

29. Pittsburgh Pirates

World Series Championship Odds: +50000
Current Record: 30-53
Previous Rankings: 28

After dropping their opening six games of Week 13, the Pirates avoided the dreaded winless week with a victory in the final match of their four game series against the Brewers in Pittsburgh on Sunday.

Despite Bryan Reynolds and Adam Frazier earning the first All-Star selections of their respective careers, Pittsburgh has still produced the lowest scoring offense in the majors, and their rotation doesn’t include a starter with an ERA below 4.00.

30. Arizona Diamondbacks

World Series Championship Odds: +50000
Current Record: 23-63
Previous Rankings: 30

Although they defeated the division leading San Francisco Giants once last week, Arizona’s 1-6 record from their seven Week 13 games leaves them at the bottom of the SportsTips’ MLB Power Rankings heading into Week 14 of the MLB season. The Diamondbacks were swept by the Cardinals in St Louis before dropping three of their four games against the Giants in Arizona.

The Diamondbacks 3-24 record last month was the second worst June record by any team in baseball history. Arizona are 12–52 in their last 64 games, which has included a franchise record losing streak and an MLB record road losing streak. As the trade season has begun, it looks as if it is time to strip this team for parts.
