SportsTips’ MLB Power Rankings 2021: Week 11

SportsTips’ MLB Power Rankings 2021: Week 11
Tue 15th June 2021

We are well over one third of the way into the 2021 MLB season and the Tampa Bay Rays have held onto the top spot on the SportsTips’ MLB Power Rankings after 10 weeks of action!

Here’s where all 30 MLB teams stand heading into Week 11 of the 2021 MLB season:

1. Tampa Bay Rays

World Series Championship Odds: +1400
Current Record: 42-24
Previous Rankings: 1

The red hot Rays have done enough to hold onto the No. 1 spot on the SportsTips’ MLB Power Rankings heading into Week 11, as they only dropped one of their five games in Week 10. After splitting their two game home set against Washington, Tampa Bay finished the week with a three game series sweep against Baltimore at home. As a result of their 7-1 victory on Sunday, the Rays outscored the O’s 16-7 in what was their seventh series sweep of the year.

With a 23-5 record from their past 28 games, Tampa Bay owns a +86 run differential over their collective opposition in that time. The Rays will face a great test in Week 11 when they face the AL Central leading White Sox in Chicago.

2. Chicago White Sox

World Series Championship Odds: +650
Current Record: 41-24
Previous Rankings: 2

Chicago recorded a pair of 2-1 series victories from their sets against the Blue Jays at home and the Tigers in Detroit. The White Sox have now won 15 of their past 20 games, while their starting pitchers boast a 11-4 record and 2.85 ERA during that time.

Carlos Rodon took a no hitter into the seventh innings of Sunday’s game in Detroit, improving his ERA to 1.89. Only teammate Lance Lynn (1.23) has a better ERA in the American League. Offensively, the White Sox averaged 6.16 runs per game in Week 10, including a 15 run performance against the Tigers on Saturday.

3. San Francisco Giants

World Series Championship Odds: +3500
Current Record: 40-25
Previous Rankings: 4

San Francisco have held onto the No. 1 spot in the loaded NL West as a result of their 3-3 Week 10 record from their games against Texas and Washington. The Giants split their two games on the road against the Rangers before splitting their four match series against the Nationals in the nation’s capital.

Although he gave up two earned runs on Saturday, which was the most that he has allowed since April 13th, Kevin Gausman (1.43 ERA) still owns the third best ERA in the league and he is the driving force behind San Francisco’s fourth ranked pitching staff. Having played more games on the road than any other team in baseball this season, the Giants are about to face the Diamondbacks, Phillies and A’s in their next 12 games, 10 of which will be in San Francisco.

4. Boston Red Sox

World Series Championship Odds: +2200
Current Record: 39-27
Previous Rankings: 3

The Red Sox managed a 3-4 Week 10 record from their games against the Marlins, Astros and Blue Jays, all of which took place at Fenway Park. Boston are now 7-6 to start the summer, losing four of their past six outings to find themselves three games behind the division and league leading Tampa Bay Rays.

Although their offense is still one of the most potent in the league when fit and firing, Boston’s pitching staff has fallen apart so far in June, as their starting rotation own a 6.26 ERA from their 13 games this month. Boston’s next eight games will be on the road as they look to stay within striking distance of Tampa Bay, who they will play in that stretch of road games.

5. Los Angeles Dodgers

World Series Championship Odds: +340
Current Record: 39-26
Previous Rankings: 7

Although it has not been smooth sailing for the reigning champions so far this season, the Dodgers did what good teams do in Week 10 and that is defeat the teams that they should defeat. Los Angeles swept the Pirates in Pittsburgh and defeated the Rangers at home on two occasions to finish the week with a 5-1 record.

In what has been a tough week for the Dodgers on the injury front, Max Muncy and Cody Bellinger both failed to finish Friday’s game against Texas and Muncy was placed on the IL the following day. However with the ball, Walker Buehler improved to 6-0 record this season after Sunday’s victory over the Rangers. Buehler has now made 22 consecutive regular season starts without a loss. He’s 8-0 with a 2.74 ERA in that time and the Dodgers are 17-5 in those games.

6. Houston Astros

World Series Championship Odds: +1600
Current Record: 37-28
Previous Rankings: 6

A 4-2 week has improved Houston to a 10-4 record from their past 14 games. The Astros collected a pair of 2-1 series victories from their sets against the Red Sox in Boston and the Twins in Minnesota.

Jose Altuve, Carlos Correa and Alex Bregman are hitting well after poor 2020 seasons, as Houston are hitting at .307 as a team with a .535 slugging percentage and scoring 6.17 runs per game so far in June. Framber Valdez has boosted the Astros rotation since his return from the IL, boasting a 3-0 record with a 1.42 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 25.1 innings.

7. Chicago Cubs

World Series Championship Odds: +4500
Current Record: 38-27
Previous Rankings: 8

After dropping their opening game of Week 10 to the Padres in San Diego, the Cubs won five consecutive games to close out last week, including a three game series sweep over the Cardinals in Chicago. The Cubs have well and truly turned their season around after a rough April, owning a 26-11 record in May and June, only the league leading Rays have been better in that time.

Kyle Hendricks has been one of the keys to Chicago’s turnaround in form, earning a win in his last six starts, the longest streak in the majors, and owning a 3.12 ERA in eight starts since the beginning of May. Offensively, the Cubs are putting up 4.6 runs per contest.

8. Oakland Athletics

World Series Championship Odds: +2000
Current Record: 40-27
Previous Rankings: 9

Oakland have extended their lead on top of the AL West as a result of five wins from their six games last week. The A’s won each of their two games against the Diamondbacks before winning three of their four games against the Royals to improve their record in June to 9-2.

With a 5.9 runs per game average from their 11 games in summer, Oakland have scored the third most runs of any team in June, only trailing two division opponents in Los Angeles and Houston. Matt Olson has been headlining the offense recently, with five homers and 14 RBIs this month.

9. Milwaukee Brewers

World Series Championship Odds: +2200
Current Record: 38-27
Previous Rankings: 11

The Milwaukee Brewers have stormed back into the top 10 of SportsTips’ MLB Power Rankings after a 5-1 Week 10 record from their six games against the Reds in Cincinnati and the Pirates in Milwaukee. The Brewers are now 9-2 in June and 14-2 from their past 16 games.

Having scored 5.6 runs per game in June, Milwaukee holds a share of first place in the NL Central as a result of being a season high 11 games above .500. The Brewers 3.57 team ERA is also good for the eighth best in baseball.

10. San Diego Padres

World Series Championship Odds: +700
Current Record: 38-29
Previous Rankings: 5

With just two wins from their six games in Week 10 and four wins from their past 14, the Padres have dropped to third place in the talented NL West, one game behind the Dodgers and three games behind the division leading Giants. In that stretch of 14 games, San Diego have scored two runs or fewer on nine occasions and they rank last in the league for scoring throughout that period of time.

As much as their offense has struggled recently, Fernando Tatis Jr. gave San Diego a recent spark with a grand slam in the seventh inning of a come-from-behind win over the Mets. It was Tatis Jr.’s 19th homer for the season, which is the equal most in the National League, and the win ended a four-game losing streak for the Padres.

11. New York Mets

World Series Championship Odds: +900
Current Record: 32-25
Previous Rankings: 10

After splitting their two game set against the Orioles in Baltimore, the Mets won two of their three games against the Padres in New York to finish the week with a 3-2 record.

While the Mets 3.16 team ERA is still the second best in baseball, their offense has recently begun to fire, averaging 5.4 runs per game last week and 4.7 runs throughout the season. Francisco Lindor, Pete Alonso and the recently acquired Billy McKinney are all finding form at the plate.

12. Toronto Blue Jays

World Series Championship Odds: +2500
Current Record: 33-30
Previous Rankings: 13

After winning just one of their three games against the White Sox in Chicago, Toronto salvaged a 3-3, .500 record after winning two of their first three games against the Red Sox in Boston. The Blue Jays will be looking to capture a series victory on the road against their division rivals when they conclude their four game set at Fenway Park on Monday.

Led by Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr, Toronto’s offense are scoring 5.09 runs per contest. Bichette leads the majors with 56 runs scored this season, which places him on track for a 144 run year, while Guerrero Jr is a genuine AL MVP chance. The 22-year-old leads MLB in home runs (21), RBIs (55), OBP (.450) and slugging (.688), and his .344 batting average is second among qualified hitters.

13. Cleveland Indians

World Series Championship Odds: +4000
Current Record: 34-28
Previous Rankings: 12

A 3-2 week for the Indians gives them a 13-14 record from their past 27 games and leaves them five and a half games behind the division leading White Sox. Although they are talented, Cleveland’s thin rotation is halting them from progressing as only Shane Bieber and Aaron Civale have managed to consistently pitch deep into games.

And speaking of the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner, Bieber gave up five earned runs on Sunday, despite having only allowed 28 in his first 13 starts. Cleveland’s 4.10 team ERA is now the 15th best in baseball and they will need Triston McKenzie, Cal Quantrill and Jean Carlos Mejía to start contributing more innings in an effort to relieve their starters as the season progresses.

14. Philadelphia Phillies

World Series Championship Odds: +5000
Current Record: 32-31
Previous Rankings: 19

The Phillies have made up some ground in the NL East after winning four of their five games against the Braves and Yankees. Philadelphia will enter Week 11 with a four game winning streak behind them and they are now just three games behind the division leading Mets.

Although New York’s Jacob deGrom has all but sealed the NL Cy Young award, Zack Wheeler is putting together a seriously good season. Wheeler leads the National League with 90.1 innings pitched (32 more than deGrom) and 112 strikeouts. A six-game road trip against the Dodgers and Giants awaits for the Phillies in Week 11.

15. Cincinnati Reds

World Series Championship Odds: +7000
Current Record: 32-31
Previous Rankings: 17

After winning just one of their three games against the Brewers at home, Cincinnati finished Week 10 with a three game sweep over the Rockies to salvage a 4-2 record. Despite their pitching woes, the Reds have a 10-3 record from their past 13 games.

Led by Nick Castellanos and Jesse Winker, the Reds offense scored 6.16 runs per game in Week 10. Castellanos (.361) and Winker (.344) own the best and second best batting averages in baseball. However, Cincinnati’s 4.86 team ERA is good for 26th in baseball.

16. New York Yankees

World Series Championship Odds: +1100
Current Record: 33-32
Previous Rankings: 14

A 2-3 week for the Yankees has continued their recent slump in form, as New York now have a 13-5 win-loss record from their past 18 games. In that time, New York’s starters have a dismal 5.59 ERA and their lineup is scoring just 3.5 runs per game.

Admittedly, their lineup averaged 5.8 runs in Week 10, however New York managed just two wins from their five games against the Twins in Minnesota and Phillies in Philadelphia.

17. Los Angeles Angels

World Series Championship Odds: +6500
Current Record: 33-32
Previous Rankings: 21

The Los Angeles Angels were our only undefeated team in Week 10, sweeping both the Royals in Los Angeles and the Diamondbacks in Arizona to improve to third place in the AL West, four games behind the Astros and six games behind the division leading A’s.

After scoring an average of 7.6 runs per game from their six victories last week, the Angels are now 15-10 in their 25 games since Mike Trout was placed on the IL. Los Angeles are now above .500 for the first time since early May as they prepare for a Week 11 set against Oakland.

18. Atlanta Braves

World Series Championship Odds: +2000
Current Record: 30-33
Previous Rankings: 15

As a result of their 2-4 week against the Phillies in Philadelphia and Marlins in Miami, Atlanta have relinquished second place in the NL East as they are now five games behind the division leading Mets.

The Braves reached a .500 record for the fifth time this season last week, however they still are yet to own a winning record in 2021.

19. St Louis Cardinals

World Series Championship Odds: +2200
Current Record: 32-33
Previous Rankings: 16

After splitting their two game set against the Indians in St Louis, the Cardinals were swept by the Cubs in Chicago, giving them a 1-4 Week 10 record from their five matches. St Louis are now fourth in the NL Central, six games behind the division leading Cubs/Brewers, after winning just two of their last 13 games.

The Cardinals are scoring just 3.5 runs per game in June and they will warmly welcome the return of Paul DeJong, who returned from his fractured rib on Friday. DeJong homered in his first game back after a month-long absence.

20. Miami Marlins

World Series Championship Odds: +10000
Current Record: 29-36
Previous Rankings: 23

A 4-3 week has moved Miami off the bottom of the NL East, as the Marlins won two of their three games against the Rockies before splitting their four game set against the Braves. Although they are in fourth place in their division and seven and a half games behind the division leading Mets, only Miami and New York own positive run differentials amongst teams in the NL East.

As has been the case all year, Miami’s pitching staff has been keeping them afloat this season, as the Marlins own the seventh best team ERA in baseball (3.55). However, Jesus Aguilar and Starling Marte have been driving up their trade value and the team’s offensive performances recently. Aguilar is on a nine game hitting streak (.412 batting average) and leads the National League in RBIs, while Marte is hitting at .348/.439/.563 this season.

21. Seattle Mariners

World Series Championship Odds: +15000
Current Record: 32-35
Previous Rankings: 20

As a result of their 2-4 week coinciding with a 6-0 week from the Angels, the Mariners have slipped to fourth place in the AL West, now eight games behind the division leading A’s. Seattle won the second game of both three game sets against the Tigers and Indians on the road last week, however dropped both rubber games to give the Mariners a pair of 2-1 series losses.

Although they are the only 30+ win team in the bottom 10 of this week’s Power Rankings, Seattle’s record is flattering, as is evident by their 5-1 record against the lowly Tigers in 2021.

22. Washington Nationals

World Series Championship Odds: +7000
Current Record: 27-35
Previous Rankings: 22

Washington split both their two game set against the Rays in Tampa Bay and their four game series against Giants in Washington to give themselves 3-3, .500 Week 10 record. Washington are now eighth and a half games behind the division leading Mets in the NL East.

Kyle Schwarber has hit leadoff in two of the Nats last three games. In that time, Schwarber has opened proceedings with two leadoff home runs, giving him three homers and five RBI from those three games.

23. Kansas City Royals

World Series Championship Odds: +8000
Current Record: 30-34
Previous Rankings: 18

Just as quickly as they returned to form, the Royals are back on the wrong side of a .500 record after losing eight of their past nine games, including a 1-6 record from their games against the Angels and A’s in Week 10. Kansas City scored three runs or fewer on seven occasions across their past nine matches.

Although the team has struggled with consistency, 26 year old Andrew Benintendi has been performing well after a rough April, hitting at .317/.358/.496 with seven home runs and 23 RBIs in 38 games since May 1st.

24. Minnesota Twins

World Series Championship Odds: +7000
Current Record: 26-39
Previous Rankings: 25

Along with the Tigers, the Twins are once again sharing the worst record in the AL Central after both clubs posted a 2-4 record from their six Week 10 games. Minnesota won just one of their three games against both the Yankees and Astros and they are now 15 games behind the division leading White Sox in the AL Central.

On a positive note, 40 year old Nelson Cruz has shown no signs of slowing down in 2021, hitting at .288 with 13 homers and 31 RBIs so far this year. Cruz will be an interesting trade asset as the deadline approaches.

25. Detroit Tigers

World Series Championship Odds: +25000
Current Record: 26-39
Previous Rankings: 26

After winning two of their three games against the Mariners in Detroit, the Tigers were swept by the White Sox at home in their three game series, giving them a 2-4 record last week. The three losses against Chicago now gives Detroit an 11-24 record against AL Central rivals, leaving them 15-15 against other opponents.

24 year old Tarik Skubal has been impressive in his last five starts, owning a 3-1 record with a 2.67 ERA and 43 strikeouts in 27 innings. Skubal has also allowed just three home runs during that span after giving up 11 in his first 33 innings this season.

26. Colorado Rockies

World Series Championship Odds: +30000
Current Record: 25-41
Previous Rankings: 24

Colorado played each of their six games on the road in Week 10 and after winning just one of those six games, the Rockies now own a dismal 5-27 record outside of Colorado this year. The Rockies won one of their three games against the Marlins in Miami before being swept by the Reds in Cincinnati.

Austin Gomber was the winning pitcher in Colorado’s sole victory last week, improving his ERA to 1.58 from his last six starts. The Rockies 5-27 road record is good for a .156 winning percentage. The lowest road winning percentage in baseball history is .167 by the 1935 Boston Braves.

27. Texas Rangers

World Series Championship Odds: +30000
Current Record: 25-41
Previous Rankings: 28

The Texas Rangers managed to steal one game off both of their opponents in Week 10, giving them a 2-3 record from their series against the Giants in Texas and Dodgers in Los Angeles.

Saturday’s 12-1 victory over the Dodgers not only helped them avoid a series sweep, but it also brought an end to the Rangers 16 game losing streak on the road. It was a short lived winning streak, as Texas dropped the series finale in LA on Sunday. The Rangers now own a 7-23 record from their last 30 games.

28. Pittsburgh Pirates

World Series Championship Odds: +30000
Current Record: 23-41
Previous Rankings: 27

The Pirates came up against two quality opponents in Week 10, and subsequently had their active losing streak extended to seven consecutive games after back to back three game sweeps at the hands of the Dodgers in Pittsburgh and Brewers in Milwaukee.

fanduel sign up bonus

Pittsburgh were not blown out in any of their six losses last week, losing none of the six games by more than three runs. However, the Pirates are now a season high 18 games below .500 as they own the second worst record in the National League.

29. Baltimore Orioles

World Series Championship Odds: +30000
Current Record: 22-42
Previous Rankings: 29

Although Baltimore won just one of their five games in Week 10, they have already equaled their win tally for May in June, as they now have five wins this month. The O’s have not had a shocking start to the summer, however as they are still trying to recover from what was a dismal May (10-28 since May 1st), we cannot rationalise a higher ranking for the O’ heading into Week 11.

Surprisingly, Cedric Mullins’ 78 hits are the most in the American League and he is batting at .321/.387/.527 splits. However, their pitching staff is still the second worst in baseball, owning a 5.08 team ERA.

30. Arizona Diamondbacks

World Series Championship Odds: +30000
Current Record: 20-46
Previous Rankings: 30

After dropping their first two games of Week 10 to the A’s in Oakland, Arizona have now lost 19 consecutive road games. However, things aren’t running much smoother for the Diamondbacks at home, as they were swept by the Angels in their final three games last week to give them an 0-5 Week 10 record.

Arizona are now 6-24 since the start of May and they are now on their second 10+ game losing streak of the season.
