SportsTips’ MLB Power Rankings 2021: Week 10

SportsTips’ MLB Power Rankings 2021: Week 10
Wed 9th June 2021

We have now had our first full week of summer baseball and the Tampa Bay Rays are our No. 1 team in the league! Find out where your team tanks below!

Here’s where all 30 MLB teams stand heading into Week 10 of the 2021 MLB season:

1. Tampa Bay Rays

World Series Championship Odds: +1400
Current Record: 38-23
Previous Rankings: 2

A 4-3 week from their games against the Yankees and Rangers gives the Rays a 38-23 overall record, which is good enough for the best win-loss record in baseball and enough to see them claim the No. 1 spot on the SportsTips’ MLB Power Rankings heading into Week 10. Tampa Bay have now won 19 of their last 23 games.

The Rays are scoring the fifth most runs per game and allowing the fifth fewest as well, giving them the third-highest run differential in baseball at +75. Austin Meadows leads the league with 48 RBIs, and more recently he’s on a 10-game hitting streak, which has produced five homers from 15 hits and 19 RBIs. At the mound, Tyler Glasnow’s 106 strikeouts are the second most in baseball.

2. Chicago White Sox

World Series Championship Odds: +650
Current Record: 36-23
Previous Rankings: 4

The White Sox finished Week 9 with a 4-3 record after their games against a pair of AL Central rivals in the Indians (1-2) and the Tigers (3-1). Although Cleveland were victorious in their series last week, Chicago have built a season high four game lead in the AL Central as a result of reaching a season best 13 games over .500 record.

Strong performances at the mound has been the key to Chicago’s success this season, as they currently rank third in the league for team ERA (3.25) as a result of owning a 2.75 ERA from their past 14 games, in which they boast a 10-4 record. Sunday’s victory over Detroit moved manager Tony La Russa into second place all time on the managerial wins list with 2,764.

3. Boston Red Sox

World Series Championship Odds: +2200
Current Record: 36-23
Previous Rankings: 3

Although they were defeated in three of their four games against the Astros in Houston earlier in the week, Boston closed out Week 9 with a three game series sweep over the Yankees in New York to salvage a 4-3 record. The Red Sox are now 6-0 against their arch rivals (Yankees) this season.

Rafael Devers’ 48 RBIs are the equal most in the league this season, as Devers, Xander Bogaerts and Alex Verdugo have kept Boston’s lineup amongst the top teams in the league in J.D Martinez’ absence on the IL. The Red Sox are scoring 4.98 runs per game this season.

4. San Francisco Giants

World Series Championship Odds: +3500
Current Record: 37-22
Previous Rankings: 5

A 4-2 week from their games against the Angels and Cubs give the Giants the most wins in the National League after one week of summer. Who would’ve picked that! San Francisco began their week by splitting their two game series against Los Angeles before closing out Week 9 with a 3-1 record from their four games against Chicago. The Giants have now won nine of their past 12 games.

San Francisco’s pitching staff owns the fifth best team ERA in baseball (3.30), however their lineup will be tested going forward, as Evan Longoria will be out for up to six weeks with a shoulder sprain. Longoria had nine homers and a .892 OPS at the time of the injury.

5. San Diego Padres

World Series Championship Odds: +700
Current Record: 36-25
Previous Rankings: 1

It was always going to be difficult for the Padres to hold onto the No.1 spot on the SportsTips’ MLB Power Rankings after they began their week by being swept by the Cubs. San Diego closed out their week with a 2-2 split from their series against the Mets at home to finish the week with a 2-5 record.

The Padres still own the best team and starting ERA in baseball, and they will get their chance at redemption early in Week 10 when they host the Cubs for a three game set in San Diego. Offensively, Fernando Tatis Jr. continues to steal the show, as he currently leads the National league in home runs (17), slugging percentage (.695) and stolen bases (13).

6. Houston Astros

World Series Championship Odds: +1600
Current Record: 33-26
Previous Rankings: 7

The Astros had every right of moving into the top five this week after winning five of their seven games against the Red Sox and Blue Jays, however we couldn’t squeeze them in. Houston defeated Boston in three of their four home games early last week before they won two of their three games against the Blue Jays on the road.

The Astros 5.31 runs per game is the equal best offensive return in baseball, and with a mix of young arms and veterans, the Astros are the 11th ranked pitching staff in the league, with a 3.79 team ERA. Houston held Boston’s potent offense to just four runs combined in their three victories over the Red Sox last week.

7. Los Angeles Dodgers

World Series Championship Odds: +340
Current Record: 34-25
Previous Rankings: 6

The Dodgers began their week with a 2-1 series victory over the Cardinals in Los Angeles before closing out the week with a 1-2 loss from their set against the Braves in Atlanta, giving them a 3-3, .500 record. With just four wins from their past 10 games, the reigning champions are a season high three games behind the first placed Giants in the NL West.

The Dodgers 5.31 runs per game is the equal best offensive return in baseball, and this may be set for a boost with three of their next four series coming against last placed teams. Los Angeles will face Pittsburgh on Tuesday before heading home to host the Rangers, and after a three-game set with the Phillies, the Dodgers will end this stretch with three games in Arizona.

8. Chicago Cubs

World Series Championship Odds: +4500
Current Record: 33-26
Previous Rankings: 8

Chicago wrapped up an impressive month of May with a victory at home over San Diego, which was just one of the victories in their sweep over the then NL wins leaders. However, summer has not been as kind to the Cubs, as they lost three of their four games against the Giants in San Francisco. Still, a 4-3 record against two quality opponents and a shared lead of the NL Central is worthy of a top 10 spot in the Power Rankings heading into Week 10.

The Cubs good form has seen their pitching staff enter the top 10 teams in the league when looking at team ERA (3.76), while offensively their 4.56 runs per game average also ranks them in the top 10 for scoring this season.

9. Oakland Athletics

World Series Championship Odds: +2000
Current Record: 35-26
Previous Rankings: 9

A 4-2 week from their games against Seattle and Colorado was enough to keep Houston at bay and see Oakland hold onto first place in the AL West.  Although they were on the road in Week 9, the A’s won two of their three games against both the Mariners and Rockies for a 4-2 record.

The A’s rotation finished the month of may with a 2.99 ERA, and Sean Manea continued his solid form as a starter, throwing nine shutout innings against Seattle and allowing just four hits. Oakland’s four game winning streak last week is now their longest since winning 13 straight in April.

10. New York Mets

World Series Championship Odds: +900
Current Record: 29-23
Previous Rankings: 11

The New York Mets kicked off a nine game road trip with seven road games against Arizona (three) and San Diego (four). The Mets posted a 4-3 record in that time, having defeated the Diamondbacks twice before splitting their four game series with the Padres. New York now has a three and a half game lead over Atlanta in the NL East.

New York’s success can largely be attributed to a pitching staff that owns the second best team ERA in baseball (3.05) and is headlined by Jacob deGrom. deGrom has an absurd 0.62 ERA through nine starts this season, as he has given up just four earned runs in 58 innings. The Mets have struggled offensively in 2021, however James McCann is starting to put up some good numbers with the bat, as he is hitting at a .300 batting average with five home runs and 13 RBIs through his last 11 games.

11. Milwaukee Brewers

World Series Championship Odds: +2200
Current Record: 33-26
Previous Rankings: 12

A 5-1 record from their Week 9 games against the Tigers and Diamondbacks gives the Brewers a 9-1 record from their last 10 games, and leaves them in equal first place in the NL Central entering Week 10.

Corbin Burnes and Brandon Woodruff are the only rotation duo in the league with ERA’s under 2.00, proving that they would be worthy starters in most years or on other teams. The Brewers pitching staff owns the ninth best team ERA in baseball (3.65). Offensively, Milwaukee’s lineup is averaging five runs per contest from their past 10 games and seeing as they don’t play a team with a winning record again until June 28, there is no reason why the Brewers can’t continue to ascend in the National League

12. Cleveland Indians

World Series Championship Odds: +4000
Current Record: 31-26
Previous Rankings: 14

The Indians made up some ground in their division early in Week 9 by winning two of their three games against the AL Central leading White Sox. However, Cleveland then dropped two of their three games against the lowly Orioles to give them a 3-3 record from their six games last week.

Three different pitchers allowed at least five runs during Sunday’s 5-18 loss to Baltimore, however any bullpen that features Shane Bieber is still a frightening proposition for any lineup in the league.

13. Toronto Blue Jays

World Series Championship Odds: +2500
Current Record: 30-27
Previous Rankings: 15

Toronto improved on their record last week, winning three of their five games against the Miami Marlins and Houston Astros. Their 3-2 week at ‘home’ gives the Blue Jays a mere 13-13 record at home this season, remembering that their home games are being played in Buffalo due to the COVID-19 pandemic restricting international travel.

With George Springer still sidelined with a quad injury, Marcus Semien is headlining a Blue Jays lineup that is scoring 4.94 runs per game at the second best batting average in the league, .282. Semien has been incredible in May, hitting at .353/.419/.647 splits through 33 games.

14. New York Yankees

World Series Championship Odds: +1100
Current Record: 31-29
Previous Rankings: 13

Since reaching a season high nine games above .500 record (29-19) on May 23rd, the New York Yankees are just 3-10, including a 2-5 record from their seven games in Week 9. New York performed admirably in their first four matches on the week, splitting their four game set with the league leading Tampa Bay Rays. However, the Yankees closed out Week 9 by being swept by the Boston Red Sox in their three game series.

The issues for the Yankees are clearly not at the mound as New York owns the seventh best team ERA in baseball (3.36) and Gerrit Cole’s 2.26 ERA and 104 strikeouts sees him as a frontrunner to win his first Cy Young award. The issues lie with the offense, as New York are scoring just 2.61 runs per game from their last 13 matches.

15. Atlanta Braves

World Series Championship Odds: +2000
Current Record: 28-29
Previous Rankings: 16

We’re now one week into summer and the Braves still haven’t been above .500. However, a 4-3 week from the matches against the Nationals (2-2) and Dodgers leaves Atlanta in second place in the NL East, three and a half games behind the division leading Mets.

Of the teams with a losing record, Atlanta are undoubtedly the most dangerous, owning a 4.85 runs per game average. Ronald Acuna Jr’s 17 home runs are the equal second most in baseball, while Ozzie Albies has batted at .373 in his last 13 games, picking up three homers in that time.

16. St Louis Cardinals

World Series Championship Odds: +2200
Current Record: 31-29
Previous Rankings: 10

A 1-6 week has seen the Cardinals slip from first place in the NL Central down to third, as St Louis are now two and a half games behind the division leading Milwaukee Brewers and New York Mets. The Cardinals won just one of their three games against the Dodgers in Los Angeles before being swept by the Reds in Cincinnati.

In what has been a tumultuous start to the summer for St Louis, three of their starting pitchers have recently found themselves on the IL, Miles Mikolas, Jack Flaherty and Kwang Hyun Kim. Flaherty, who leads the league in wins, is expected to miss an extended period with an oblique injury.

17. Cincinnati Reds

World Series Championship Odds: +7000
Current Record: 28-29
Previous Rankings: 22

After winning two of their three games against the Phillies on the road, Cincinnati made up some ground in the NL Centrals by sweeping the St Louis Cardinals in their three game series at home.

Cincinnati were back to their offensive best last week, scoring 33 runs in their five victories. Jesse Winker put the exclamation mark on the sweep against St Louis, notching his second three home run game of the season on Sunday. Winker’s 17 homers are the equal second most in baseball and his .350 batting average is also good for the second best in the league.

18. Kansas City Royals

World Series Championship Odds: +8000
Current Record: 29-28
Previous Rankings: 18

And just like that, the Royals are an above .500 team once again. Kansas City won four of their six games against Pittsburgh and Minnesota last week, and they are now just two and a half games behind the second placed Indians in the AL Central.

Last month’s 13 game losing streak now seems like a distant memory as the Royals lineup are now in the top half of the league when looking at runs scored per game, with a 4.41 average. Kansas City will still need to improve at the mound if they are going to remain in contention for a spot in the postseason, currently owning a 4.41 team ERA.

19. Philadelphia Phillies

World Series Championship Odds: +5000
Current Record: 28-30
Previous Rankings: 20

A 3-2 week has seen the Phillies edge closer to a .500 record, as Philadelphia won three of their five games against Cincinnati and Washington. The Phillies are now just half a game behind the Braves for second place in the NL East.

fanduel sign up bonus

Philadelphia once again showed just how good their best baseball can be last week, defeating the Reds 17-3 on Tuesday, and the Nationals 5-2 on Saturday and 12-6 on Sunday. However, the Phillies also showed how bad their worst can be on Monday, losing to Cincinnati by 10 runs.

20. Seattle Mariners

World Series Championship Odds: +15000
Current Record: 30-31
Previous Rankings: 17

The Mariners managed a 3-4 record from their seven games against AL West rivals, losing two of their games against Oakland in Seattle before splitting their four game set against the Angels in Los Angeles. The below .500 week leaves the Mariners five games behind the division leading A’s and four games behind the second placed Astros.

21 year old Jarred Kelenic undoubtedly has a bright future of MLB ahead of him, however he might need a trip back to the minors to clear his head and regain some form. The sixth pick from the 2018 MLB draft hasn’t registered a hit since May 25th, leaving him 0 for 37 with 17 strikeouts in that time.

21. Los Angeles Angels

World Series Championship Odds: +6500
Current Record: 27-32
Previous Rankings: 21

After splitting their two game set against the Giants in San Francisco, the Angels split their four game series against the Mariners in Los Angeles, giving them a 3-3, .500 record from their six games in Week 9.

The Angels offense averaged 5.16 runs per game last week, as Justin Upton and Shohei Ohtani continue their solid form with the bat. Upton is hitting at .333 with four doubles, five homers, 11 RBIs and 12 runs in his last 12 games, while Ohtani has hit 16 home runs this season, to go alone with a 2.76 ERA and 60 strikeouts in 42.1 innings as a starting pitcher.

22. Washington Nationals

World Series Championship Odds: +7000
Current Record: 24-32
Previous Rankings: 24

The Nationals recently wrapped up a 3-4 week against the Braves and Phillies in Week 9, which leaves them seven games behind the first placed Mets in the NL East, and eight and half games out of a wild card spot in the National League.

Offensively, Juan Soto has had a hot start to the summer, hitting at .348 with a triple and three homers since May 30th. Off the field, Washington will still be weighing up whether they deal 36 year old Max Scherzer before the trade deadline. Scherzer has a 2.22 ERA and 0.82 WHIP from 12 starts this season, and he will bring the Nats a substantial haul in return for his services at the mound if he is traded.

23. Miami Marlins

World Series Championship Odds: +10000
Current Record: 25-33
Previous Rankings: 19

Miami’s 3-1 victory on Sunday brought an end to their eight game losing streak, however it was the Marlins only win in Week 9 as Miami lost their first five games of the week against the Blue Jays and Pirates. The Marlins have been competitive in the NL East so far this season, however they are now seven and a half games behind the division leading New York Mets.

Despite their recent record, Miami’s pitching staff still boasts the eighth best team ERA in baseball (3.56). However, the Marlins lineup continued their struggles in Week 9, scoring just 3.5 runs per game last week.

24. Colorado Rockies

World Series Championship Odds: +30000
Current Record: 24-36
Previous Rankings: 28

The Rockies continued their impressive form at Coors Field in 2021 last week, sweeping the Rangers and winning one of their three games against the A’s to finish Week 9 with a 4-2 record. Colorado are now 20-14 at home and an atrocious 4-22 on the road.

Off the field, it was recently announced that Trevor Story doesn’t plan to re-sign with the team, meaning it may only be a matter of time until the Rockies trade him before next month’s deadline. Their 2020 combination of Arenado and Story at third base and shortstop will soon be a distant memory.

25. Minnesota Twins

World Series Championship Odds: +7000
Current Record: 24-35
Previous Rankings: 25

Minnesota gave Baltimore their first win in 14 games on Tuesday as they went down 4-7. To make matters even worse, the Twins dropped a second game against the struggling O’s to hand Baltimore a 2-1 series victory. Minnesota then split their four game set against the Royals in Kansas City, winning the final two matches of the series to salvage a 3-4 Week 9 record.

The Twins recent schedule offered them an opportunity to turn their season around, with 13 consecutive games against the Orioles and Royals. Having managed just a 7-6 record in that time, Minnesota’s hopes of a third consecutive playoff appearance are looking far from realistic.

26. Detroit Tigers

World Series Championship Odds: +25000
Current Record: 24-35
Previous Rankings: 23

Detroit managed to win just one game off each of their opponents in Week 9, splitting their two game set against the Brewers in Milwaukee and winning just one of their four games against the White Sox in Chicago.

As much as Detroit has embraced the rebuild in 2021, the Tigers have gotten some strong performances from promising young pitchers. Former No. 1 overall draft pick Casey Mize owns 2.13 ERA and 0.84 WHIP in 38 innings in May, and he has held opposition batters to a .168/.241/.298 line. As well as Mize, Tarik Skubal (3.09 ERA since May) and Spencer Turnbull (2.88 ERA) have helped lead the Tigers to the 11th best rotation ERA this season, 3.82, which is alsop the fifth best in the American League.

27. Pittsburgh Pirates

World Series Championship Odds: +30000
Current Record: 23-35
Previous Rankings: 27

After losing both matches of their two game set against the Royals in Kansas City, Pittsburgh salvaged a respectable .500 week thanks to three wins from their four games against Miami at home.

Having been on the IL since the second game of the season, Ke’Bryan Hayes made his long awaited return last week. Hayes has hit at .389 with a double, a triple and a home run in his four games since returning to the field, as the 24 year old looks to ignite the Pirates offense, which is scoring just 3.55 runs per game.

28. Texas Rangers

World Series Championship Odds: +30000
Current Record: 23-38
Previous Rankings: 26

A 1-5 week leaves the Rangers with just one win from their last 11 games. Texas began their week by being swept by the Rockies in Colorado before losing two of their three games against the Rays at home. The Rangers are now 12 games off the pace in the AL West and five and half games behind the fourth placed Angels.

fanduel sign up bonus

As a result of their losses to Colorado, Texas have now lost 15 straight consecutive road games. Their next five series on the road will come against the Dodgers, Astros, A’s, Mariners and Blue Jays. Much like Arizona, things could get ugly in a hurry for the Rangers.

29. Baltimore Orioles

World Series Championship Odds: +30000
Current Record: 21-38
Previous Rankings: 30

A 4-2 week for Baltimore was good enough to see them move out of last place in the Power Rankings. The O’s won both of their home series against the Twins and Indians last week. Baltimore’s four wins in June are already just one win shy of matching their total for the month of May.

As well as bringing an end to their 14 game losing streak, the Orioles received some good news on the injury front. Ace pitcher John Means’ MRI revealed no structural damage after he landed on the IL with a shoulder strain. Means has a 2.28 ERA and 69 strikeouts from 71 innings of work this year.

30. Arizona Diamondbacks

World Series Championship Odds: +30000
Current Record: 20-41
Previous Rankings: 29

A 1-6 week from their games against the Mets and Brewers leaves the Diamondbacks with the worst record in baseball and has seen them return to the last spot on the SportsTips’ MLB Power Rankings heading into Week 10. Arizona won just one of their three home games against New York before they were swept by the Brewers in Milwaukee.

The Diamondbacks finished April two games above .500 and have since posted a 6-29 record, including a 2-19 record from their last 21 games. Arizona will enter Week 10 having already lost 17 consecutive games on the road, and their upcoming road opponents include the A’s, Giants, Padres, Cardinals, Dodgers and Cubs. Things could get ugly.
