MLB Free Agency Signings: How Does This Impact the New York Mets?

MLB Free Agency Signings: How Does This Impact the New York Mets?
Mon 15th February 2021

Could 2021 bring the second edition of the Subway Series? The New York Mets are hoping they will reach the World Series this season, where they might potentially compete against the New York Yankees.

The team brought in a high-value player in a trade with the Cleveland Indians, but they were also active in the MLB free agency market. They focused on bringing in some new faces while getting rid of some of the weaker links on the roster.

The Mets have some new faces coming to Willets Point this season, and new owner Steve Cohen is doing everything he can to make the Mets a contender.

Here’s a look at some of the MLB free agency moves the Mets made in 2021.

Various Acquisitions

The New York Mets brought in several free agents this past offseason. The Mets brought in James McCann from the Chicago White Sox to be their new catcher.

McCann had a .289 average with seven home runs this season. McCann was signed to a four-year contract and will replace Wilson Ramos, who left for the Detroit Tigers.

The Mets signed setup man Trevor May from the Minnesota Twins this offseason. May will be a useful asset for closer Edwin Diaz and has a potential to get a hundred strikeouts. The team also signed mid-reliever Aaron Loup from Tampa Bay Rays.

Most of the other free agent picks from the team are bench players. The team acquired two outfielders from the Chicago Cubs, Albert Almora Jr. and Jose Martinez. They also collected utility player Jose Peraza from the Boston Red Sox.

The most substantial move for the Mets this offseason came from a trade with Cleveland, where they acquired shortstop Francisco Lindor.

The trade shows how committed the Mets are to competing this season, plus it helps make up for how second baseman Robinson Cano will be suspended for the coming season for violating the league’s drug policy once again. The team also brought in starting pitcher Carlos Carrasco through the same trade.

The Mets also resigned infielder Brandon Drury and starting pitcher Marcus Stroman. These moves, alongside Noah Syndergaard returning from Tommy John surgery this offseason, will make the Mets substantial contenders for the National League pennant in 2021.

Team Departures

There were a few departures of note in Queens this offseason, as starting pitcher Michael Wacha left for Tampa Bay on a one-year deal. Fellow starter Ervin Santana also left for the Kansas City Royals on a minor league deal, although whether he will make it in the major leagues this season remains an uncertainty.

Shortstops Amed Rosario and Andres Gimenez both left as part of the team’s trade with Cleveland. The team also declined to resign a few of their current free agents, including second basemen Eduardo Nunez and Jed Lowrie, third baseman and Todd Frazier, and catcher Robinson Chirnos.

But many of these players were considered expendable following some of the various improvements the Mets brought in this past season.

A Final Note

The New York Mets showed this offseason they are committed to winning the World Series, but they will need to compete with the Atlanta Braves and Washington Nationals this coming season.

The Braves are still favorites and already got two significant free agents in starting pitchers Charlie Morton and Drew Smyly. The Nationals also picked up Jon Lester and Kyle Schwarber on the free agency market.

But while the Mets will have some substantial threats to watch for, as new ownership is aiming to turn things around for this franchise. You can expect the Mets to be a substantial contender for the NL East and the World Series this coming season.
