Only three weeks into the new year, the PGA Tour is already preparing for their third event of 2021. Following the Tournament of Champions and Sony Open in Hawaii, the tour is back on the continental United States which will allow some of the best golfers in the world to re-join the tour for the American Express at PGA West.

SportTips’ pick to win the American Express:
Pick: Scottie Scheffler (+1600)
After three rounds at last year’s American Express, 24 year old Scottie Scheffler was tied for the lead having shot 65, 64 and 66 through 54 holes. Scheffler was in just his 19th start on the PGA tour and could almost taste his first victory, before a last round 70 left him in third place, three shots off the pace through 72 holes.
Whether Scheffler is capable of improving on last year’s efforts when he returns to California is still unknown, but what we do know is that of the players in this field only Russell Henley has been better from tee to green than Scheffler over the past six months.
The American tied for 13th at the Tournament of Champions earlier in January, which was his third top-20 finish in his last four starts, including a tie for 19th at the 2020 Masters.
Having shot par or better in his last nine rounds, Scheffler is undeniably in solid form and has proven to be capable of competing at PGA West. Great value to win outright at +1600.
SportTips’ long-shot pick to win the American Express:
Pick: Charley Hoffman (+8000)
With four PGA Tour wins under his belt, 44 year old Californian native Charley Hoffman has proven to be quite the player when competing at PGA West. Hoffman has two top-ten finishes at the American Express and has made the cuts in his last four starts on tour.
In his most recent outing, Hoffman tied for 14th with a score of -16 at the Sony Open at the Waiʻalae Country Club earlier this month. Hoffman was excellent with his irons in Hawaii but lost numerous strokes due to poor putting.
Looking for his first win on tour since 2016, Charley Hoffman will need to be better when on green this weekend, however coming into the tournament with some good form under his belt and returning to a course that he has played well in the past, +8000 for Hoffman to win the American Express is enticing value.
