Free Golf Picks For The Open Championship, 2022
Wed 13th July 2022

The Open Championship will have to live up to high expectations this weekend as it follows two thrilling majors. The PGA Championship went to an epic overtime battle between Justin Thomas and Will Zalatoris, with Thomas coming out on top in Tulsa. Then, June’s US Open seemed to have a new leader every day, but after four days of excellent golf, England’s Matt Fitzpatrick came out on top, beating out Zalatoris, who once again had to settle for runner-up.

So, will the third time be the charm for Zalatoris? The 25-year-old currently has the 11th best odds at +2600, so the question remains: will he continue his hot streak and finally breakthrough for his first major? Or, has his luck run out for 2022?

Meanwhile the past two major winners Fitzpatrick and Thomas have the sixth (+1800) and eighth (+2100) best odds respectively. Fitzpatrick will hope to ride his recent success back overseas to his home region of the UK. As for Thomas, he will try to break a tough spell at the Open Championship, a competition he’s never placed higher than 11th in.

Before Fitzpatrick and Thomas, one man started this major season off with a win at The Masters: Scottie Scheffler (+1600). The 26-year-old remains the world’s number one ranked golfer and after a disappointing performance at the PGA Championship, Scheffler looked like his Masters self again at the US Open, finishing in a second-place tie with Zalatoris at -5 — one stroke behind Fitzpatrick. Scheffler (+1600) will look to continue his exceptional 2022 on a strong note with an Open Championship win.

There’s some other heavy hitters atop the odds game right now: with 2021 champ Collin Morikawa (+1800) being right there. Morikawa had a strong weekend at the US Open, finishing fifth, but then he had an abysmal showing at the Scottish Open, where he was cut with a +5.

Morikawa was quoted saying how much “it sucked” having to hand over the Open Championship’s Claret Jug this week after it being his for the last year. That should drive the SoCal native to have a strong weekend at St. Andrews.

Rory McIlroy (+1000) is another name you can never overlook. The Northern Irish golfer heads to his home region as the world’s second ranked golfer, where he‘ll look to add his second Open Championship title.

Also look out for Xander Schauffele (+1400) who’s the hottest golfer in the game right now capturing back-to-back wins at the Scottish Open and the Travelers Championship. The 28-year-old is considered one of the best golfers to never win a major. Is this weekend finally his time.

A big topic for the US Open was how the controversial LIV Golf players would do at the tournament. For the most part they struggled to make much noise. But, some experts think Dustin Johnson (+3200) could have a strong showing this weekend, so per usual, he’s one to keep an eye on.

Michael’s Golf Pick – Dark Horse:

Dustin Johnson (+3200)

Back to the PGA, Cameron Smith (+2200) is one to keep an eye on as well, as he is currently ranked sixth in the world. Smith, like Schauffele, has never won a major — in fact he’s never finished higher than 20th at the Open Championship. But, he’s been having a phenomenal year and I think he could be ready to take the leap at St. Andrews. His odds are pretty good, but it doesn’t feel like there’s a whole lot of media attention on him, which should benefit his play.

Michael’s Golf Pick – Top Choice:

Cameron Smith (+2200)

I say it every time I write one of these golf predictions: picking a winner in these tournaments is never easy. That being said I’ll once again offer a couple options. If you want a couple of picks, I’ll go with Smith as a favorite (he has the ninth highest odds), Johnson as a dark horse and for a long shot I’ll go with the English Justin Rose — who while not mentioned in this article, is a former major winner who always seems to compete.

Michael’s Golf Pick – Long Shot:

Justin Rose (+6000)
