The No. 8 seed Maryland Terrapins (21-12, 12-10 Big 10) face the No. 9 seed West Virginia Mountaineers (19-14, 8-12 Big 12) Thursday at Legacy Arena in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
West Virginia was defeated by the Kansas Jayhawks 78-61 at T-Mobile Center on Thursday in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Conference Tourney. Erik Stevenson was the scoring leader in the losing effort with 13 points.
Maryland came up short in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tourney on Friday at United Center, falling to the Indiana Hoosiers 70-60. Hakim Hart had 16 points in the loss to lead the team. The Mountaineers earned the win in the last meeting between the teams 69-59 at Nationwide Arena in March 2015.
The Mountaineers have been led this season by Stevenson, who is averaging 15.5 points per game. Meanwhile, Tre Mitchell is grabbing 5.5 rebounds per game, and Kedrian Johnson is dishing 3.1 assists. Jahmir Young has powered the Terrapins’ offense, averaging 16.1 points per game.
Young also has doled out 3.2 assists per game. Julian Reese has posted 7.1 rebounds per game. The Terrapins rank as one of the top scoring defenses in the country, 26th-best with 63.2 points per game allowed.
