The No. 24 Virginia Tech Hokies (10-1, 1-0 ACC) will try to break down one of the NCAA’s top shooting defenses when they welcome the Grambling State Tigers (6-3) on Saturday. Grambling State edged past the Vanderbilt Commodores 64-62 at Memorial Gym on December 9, their third straight win.
With 12 points, Carte’Are Gordon was the scoring leader. Shawndarius Cowart chipped in with 11 points. Virginia Tech won their fifth in a row on Sunday at Barclays Center, beating the Oklahoma State Cowboys 70-65. Sean Pedulla topped the scoresheet with 16 points. With 13 points and six steals, Justyn Mutts also had a strong game.
The Hokies came out on top in the last meeting between the teams 87-52 at Cassell Coliseum in December 2015. The Tigers have been led this season by Gordon (12.2 ppg), Cameron Christon (11.7), and Cowart (10.7).
Gordon also has grabbed 7.1 rebounds per game, while Cowart has dished 3.3 assists per game. Pedulla (16.9 ppg) and Grant Basile (14.6) have powered the Hokies on offense. Pedulla also has tallied 3.8 assists per game.
Mutts has averaged 7.6 rebounds per game. The Tigers rank as one of the country’s toughest FG% defenses, holding foes to to a 13th-lowest rate of 36.9%.Virginia Tech has gone 9-1 over the last 10, scoring 74.6 points per game on average while allowing 64.3 (+10.3 margin).
