The No. 8 Virginia Cavaliers (17-4, 9-3 ACC) will try to slow down one of the nation’s top scoring teams when they welcome the No. 22 North Carolina State Wolfpack (19-5, 9-4 ACC) on Tuesday. North Carolina State topped the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 72-64 at PNC Arena on Saturday, their fourth consecutive win.
With 24 points and eight rebounds, DJ Burns led the way. The Wolfpack fell to fifth in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Virginia fell short on Saturday at Cassell Coliseum, falling to the Virginia Tech Hokies 74-68. Jayden Gardner had 20 points and 10 rebounds in the losing effort to lead the team.
The Cavaliers are second in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The teams are meeting for the only time this season. North Carolina State came out on top in the only game between the teams last season 77-63 at PNC Arena in January 2022.
Jericole Hellems led the Wolfpack with 21 points, while Terquavion Smith played a key role with 20 points. Armaan Franklin had 14 points in the losing effort.
The Wolfpack have been led this season by Smith and Jarkel Joiner, who are averaging 18.5 and 16.2 points per game, respectively. Smith also has dished 4.6 assists per game. Meanwhile, Burns is grabbing 4.9 rebounds per game.
Franklin (12.7 ppg), Kihei Clark (11.6), and Gardner (11.2) have supplied much of the Cavaliers’ offense. Gardner also has averaged 5.1 rebounds per game, while Clark has doled out 6.0 assists per game. With 79.6 points per game, the Wolfpack are one of the most explosive offenses in the nation (28th).
North Carolina State is 8-2 in the last 10 games with an average margin of +5.8 (78.1-72.3). Virginia has also gone 8-2 over the last 10, scoring 70.9 points per game on average while holding opponents to 63.4 (+7.5 margin).
