The Denver Pioneers (8-1) will try to slow down one of the country’s top shooting teams when they travel to face the No. 19 UCLA Bruins (7-2, 2-0 Pac-12) on Saturday. Denver beat the Texas A&M-Commerce Lions 84-75 at Hamilton Gymnasium on Sunday, their sixth win in a row. Tommy Bruner was the standout player with 20 points.
UCLA won their fourth in a row on Sunday at Pauley Pavilion, beating the Oregon Ducks 65-56. Jaylen Clark and Amari Bailey topped the scoresheet with 14 points each. With 12 points, Jaime Jaquez Jr. also had an impressive game. The Bruins dropped to third in the Pac-12 Conference.
The Bruins got the win in the last meeting between the teams 81-62 at Pauley Pavilion in December 2019. Cody Riley led the Bruins with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Ade Murkey had 18 points in the losing effort. The Pioneers have been led this season by Tevin Smith (14.5 ppg), Bruner (14.4), and Tyree Corbett (12.8).
Corbett also has grabbed 9.3 rebounds per game, while Bruner has dished 4.0 assists per game. Jaquez Jr.’s 17.3 points per game have powered the Bruins on offense. Clark is pulling down 5.7 rebounds per game, and Tyger Campbell is distributing 4.9 assists. Shooting 52.7% from the field, the Pioneers are one of the country’s most accurate field goal shooting teams (2nd).
