The No. 1 North Carolina Tar Heels (2-0) welcome the Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs (0-2) Tuesday at Dean E. Smith Center. Gardner-Webb lost to the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks 86-71 at William R. Johnson Coliseum on Thursday.
With 14 points, Julien Soumaoro was the scoring leader in the losing effort. North Carolina were victorious on Friday at Dean E. Smith Center, beating the Charleston Cougars 102-86. Armando Bacot had 28 points, carrying the team.
The Tar Heels triumphed in the last meeting between the teams 77-61 at Dean E. Smith Center in November 2019, their third straight against the Runnin’ Bulldogs. Cole Anthony led the Tar Heels with 28 points. Jose Perez had 12 points in defeat.
The Runnin’ Bulldogs have been led early this season by Soumaoro, who is averaging 13.0 points per game. Meanwhile, Kareem Reid is grabbing 7.0 rebounds per game, and Lucas Stieber is dishing 6.5 assists.
Bacot and Caleb Love have supplied much of the Tar Heels’ offense, averaging 22.0 and 21.0 points per game, respectively. Bacot also has pulled down 7.5 rebounds per game, while Love has distributed 3.0 assists per game.
