The No. 16 Xavier Musketeers (19-6, 11-3 Big East) head to face the No. 11 Marquette Golden Eagles (20-6, 12-3 Big East) Wednesday in a game that could see a lot of points.
Xavier was narrowly beaten by the Butler Bulldogs 69-67 at Hinkle Fieldhouse on Friday. With 17 points and eight rebounds, Colby Jones was a top performer in the losing effort.
The Musketeers fell to third in the Big East Conference. Marquette emerged victorious on Saturday at Capital One Arena, beating the Georgetown Hoyas 89-75. Tyler Kolek had 14 points and eight assists, carrying the team. The Golden Eagles are first in the Big East Conference.
The teams are meeting for the final time this season. Xavier will be pursuing a season sweep against Marquette after winning the only prior game 80-76 at Cintas Center on January 15. Kolek topped all players in scoring with 25 points and seven assists in the losing effort.
Jack Nunge had 16 points, 13 rebounds, and three blocks for the Musketeers. Souley Boum (16.1 ppg), Nunge (14.7), and Jones (14.4) have led the Musketeers in scoring this season. Nunge also has grabbed 7.9 rebounds per game, while Boum has dished 4.9 assists per game.
Kam Jones and Olivier-Maxence Prosper have been the primary providers of the Golden Eagles’ offense, averaging 15.2 and 13.0 points per game, respectively. Kolek is recording 7.7 assists per game, second-most in the nation, and Oso Ighodaro is pulling down 5.8 rebounds per game.
The Golden Eagles and the Musketeers rank as two of the most potent offenses in the nation, 11th and 21st in offensive efficiency, respectively. Xavier is 7-3 in the last 10 games with an average margin of +3.8 (82.2-78.4). Marquette has an 8-2 record over the last 10, scoring 79.3 points per game on average while holding opponents to 70.4 (+8.9 margin).
