The No. 14 Marquette Golden Eagles (17-5, 9-2 Big East), one of the nation’s top scoring teams, play host to the Villanova Wildcats (10-11, 4-6 Big East) on Wednesday.
Villanova was beaten by the Providence Friars 70-65 at Wells Fargo Center on Sunday. With 21 points and nine rebounds, Cam Whitmore had a standout performance in the loss. The Wildcats remain seventh in the Big East Conference.
Marquette won their third in a row in dominant fashion on Saturday at Wintrust Arena, beating the DePaul Blue Demons 89-69. David Joplin topped the scoresheet with 28 points.
With 24 points, 10 assists, and nine rebounds, Tyler Kolek also produced a strong performance. The Golden Eagles slipped to second in the Big East Conference.
The teams are meeting for the final time this season. Marquette will be pursuing a season sweep against Villanova after taking the only earlier game 68-66 at Finneran Pavilion in December 2022, their third straight head-to-head victory.
Stevie Mitchell led the Golden Eagles with 19 points. Whitmore had 14 points and eight rebounds in the losing effort. The Wildcats have been led this season by Caleb Daniels and Eric Dixon, who are averaging 16.3 and 15.7 points per game, respectively.
Dixon also has grabbed 6.5 rebounds per game, while Daniels has dished 3.0 assists per game. Kam Jones and Olivier-Maxence Prosper have been the primary providers of the Golden Eagles’ offense, averaging 16.0 and 14.0 points per game, respectively.
Kolek is doling out 7.9 assists per game, third-most in the nation, and Oso Ighodaro is pulling down 6.2 rebounds per game. The Golden Eagles are one of the top scoring offenses in the nation, ranking 13th with 82.6 points per game.
In the last 10 games, Villanova is 4-6 with an average margin of +0.2 (69.8-69.6). Marquette has an 8-2 record over the last 10, scoring 84.4 points per game on average while allowing 74.9 (+9.5 margin). The Golden Eagles are averaging 82.6 ppg for the full season while allowing 70.9.
