UConn defeated the Providence Friars 73-66 at Madison Square Garden yesterday in the quarterfinals, their sixth win in a row.

With 19 points, Jordan Hawkins was the scoring leader. Tristen Newton added 16 points and seven assists. Marquette won their seventh in a row in a close one in the quarterfinals yesterday at Madison Square Garden, beating the St. John’s Red Storm 72-70 in overtime.

Tyler Kolek had 19 points, nine rebounds, and six assists to lead the team. UConn and Marquette split their two matchups this season. The Huskies got the win in the most recent meeting, beating the Golden Eagles 87-72 at XL Center on February 7.

Hawkins led the Huskies with 20 points, while Newton had a triple double with 12 points, 12 assists, and 10 rebounds. Kolek had 17 points in the losing effort. The Huskies have been led this season by Adama Sanogo and Hawkins, who are averaging 16.7 and 15.5 points per game, respectively.

Sanogo also has grabbed 7.2 rebounds per game. Meanwhile, Newton is dishing 4.6 assists per game. Kam Jones and Kolek have been the primary providers of the Golden Eagles’ offense, averaging 15.1 and 12.9 points per game, respectively. Kolek also has distributed 7.9 assists per game, second-most in the country.
