Alabama State @ #25 Texas Tech – 2pm ET

Alabama State will be looking to end the calendar year off on a high note. Despite the fact that their season hasn’t gone their way up until this point a win in this one would be a huge momentum boost. While Texas Tech will be looking to get a win in what is likely a tune up game for them. With a win they may even move up in the top 25.

Denis Kirilov

Alabama State has been one of the worst performing teams in the NCAA in recent years. They hold to a 2-10 record this year, as for comparison, they finished off the previous campaign winning just 4 out of 18 matches. The team is in a 5-game losing streak as only Gerald Liddell manages to stay above the 10-point per game mark so far. He actually leads the Hornets in assists and steals as well which further underlines his impact on the whole team. Alabama State will try to minimize the damages until the end of the year and improve their shooting, if possible.

Texas Tech is an ambitious team that will be looking for an easy win over the unseeded opponent. The Red Raiders are 9-2 so far as the two losses came against Providence and Gonzaga. They defeated Tennessee in a narrow match that finished 57:52 after overtime. In their last match, Texas Tech outclassed Eastern Washington, 78:46, which marked their fifth win by over 30 points this campaign. Kevin McCullar leads the team, but he will need to work on his shooting, if he wants to be shortlisted by the scouts. The Red Raiders’ greatest strength seems to be the sheer balance and the ability to rotate the team without losing much of its edge throughout the match. That’s why, I will go with Texas Tech covering their spread in the first game since almost 10 days for both squads.

Denis’ College Basketball Pick: Texas Tech -30 (-110)

Noah Dunlap

Alabama State is legitimately one of the worst teams in the country this year, and that isn’t going to get better as they now take on a ranked Texas Tech team that has stayed relatively consistent all year long, as they consistently find themselves right around that 20-25 spot in the rankings week after week. The Hornets come into this one at 2-10 on the year, and one of those came in an exhibition game against Tuskegee, which doesn’t bode well for them moving forward. The one good thing you can say about Alabama State right now is that they aren’t scared of playing anyone, as so far this year they’ve already taken on the likes of Texas, Iowa State, Iowa, and had games against Memphis and UCLA both canceled due to Covid. That’s the sign of a team, that while they may not be very good, they are fearless, which I can respect.

Texas Tech, on the other hand, come in at 9-2, and have a big win over Tennessee to help boost their resume. The problem is that outside of that win over the Vols, they have losses to Providence and Gonzaga, and the rest of their wins came over pretty bad competition. They’re certainly a tournament team come March, but I question whether the offense is good enough to allow them to make a deep run, or even let them cover the number here. Give me Alabama State at +30 as the safe play in this one.

Noah’s College Basketball Pick: Alabama State +30 (-110)

Tony Battalio

Alabama State is having a rough year coming into this game. Out of their first twelve games on the season they have only managed to pick up two victories. They are currently on a five game losing streak as they picked up losses against Texas, Pepperdine, Samford, Dayton, and North Alabama in recent weeks. Now they will be looking to close out the calendar year strong, but they will need a perfect performance to have a chance to beat Texas Tech in this game on Tuesday. The Texas Tech Red Raiders come into this game with a record of 9-2 on the year. They are nationally ranked just inside the top 25 rankings at number 25 and will be looking to pick up a few more wins to keep moving up. Both losses for them on the season have come in the month of December, most recently was a 15 point loss to Gonzaga. In their last game they picked up a blowout win over Eastern Washington, and they will be hoping to carry that momentum into this one. As for the result of this game, I have the Texas Tech Red Raiders picking up the victory at home and closing the year out on a two game winning streak.

Tony’s College Basketball Pick: Texas Tech -30 (-110)

North Alabama @ #4 Gonzaga – 5pm ET

North Alabama is taking their 7-5 record on the road to Washington to play the top five ranked Gonzaga Bulldogs in this one. They, much like many other teams, will be looking to cap off 2021 strong with a win. Meanwhile Gonzaga is likely looking at this one like it’s a free steak dinner before they enter into conference play.

Denis Kirilov

The North Alabama Lions might hold a 7-5 record, but this is quite misleading. They are surely far away from the levels shown by the seeded teams. This was further proven in their game against Auburn, which they lost 70:44. Sometimes, they really struggle in front positions as they are unable to go beyond the 60-point mark. North Alabama finished off the previous season with 13 wins and 11 losses and I think we might be expecting something similar during this campaign, if not worse.

Gonzaga, on the other hand, were considered one of the main favorites for the NCAA title this year, but it seems that they will need to go the long way to capture this. They came up short in their last attempt, being whitewashed by Baylor in the final game, 70-84. The team has already lost twice this season against Duke and Alabama, but their three consecutive wins later on suggest that they are far better than some teams. Chet Holmgren, Drew Timme, and Andrew Nembhard lead the way for the Zags who are hungry for more dominant victories. I think they will easily cruise past the Lions without taking their foot off the throttle. Hence, I will suggest going with their spread in this game.

Denis’ College Basketball Pick: Gonzaga -31.5 (-115)

Noah Dunlap

Don’t be fooled by the records in this one, this game is a mismatch of epic proportions. North Alabama may come in at 7-5 on the year, but they’ve seen nothing like what they’re about to face with this Gonzaga team, who from a talent perspective, may be the best team in the nation. The Zags have had a bit of a roller coaster type year so far, as they’ve already slipped up twice, but both losses have been to quality competition in Duke and Alabama. With at least first round picks in next year’s NBA Draft on the roster, in Drew Timme and Chet Holmgren, I’m going to keep this summary and pick short and sweet, and just tell you to take the Bulldogs in a big way here, as I don’t think they feel the need to take their foot off the gas here, and just continue to pour it on a team that is overmatched.

Noah’s College Basketball Pick: Gonzaga -31.5 (-115)

Tony Battalio

North Alabama has put together a decent year, they sit at 7-5 coming into this game. However this game against the Gonzaga Bulldogs will be their toughest of the season. They are currently on a one game losing streak, after falling to Central Florida by 11 points in their last contest. They will likely be looking to use this game as sort of a measuring stick game to gauge where they are before heading into conference play when the calendar turns to 2022. If they want any chance at a victory they will need to play a perfect game of basketball for forty full minutes.

The Gonzaga Bulldogs come into this game with a record of 10-2 on the season. Despite the recent rough stretch they suffered in December they are still one of the top contenders to win the national championship by the time next April comes around. Much like every other game the Bulldogs have played against lesser opponents, I expect them to pick up the win in blowout fashion in this one as well.

Tony’s College Basketball Pick: Gonzaga -31.5 (-115)

Northwestern State @ #1 Baylor – 8pm ET

Denis Kirilov

Baylor seems to be the best team in the last two years in the NCAA. They might have been considered underdogs in the final last year against Gonzaga, but this match turned into one of the most one-sided games in recent times. They took the lead from the very beginning and didn’t flinch for a second later on. The Bears remain undefeated this season as they went 11-0, defeating teams like Villanova and Oregon. In their match against Villanova, they did something that hasn’t been done for a long time. They kept them under 40 points which set a new anti-record for their opponents.

Northwestern State doesn’t seem like the right opponent that will stop Baylor in their journey towards back-to-back titles. They hold a 3-10 record so far and sit in last place in the Southland Conference. The Demons only managed to defeat Dallas Christian, SW Adventist, and Champion Christian Tigers. They have faced seeded teams twice in the face of Houston and LSU who crushed them by approximately 40 points after more than dominant first halves. I think we will see the same thing happening to them in their visit to Waco, Texas. Therefore, I will strongly suggest going with Baylor’s spread in this game as even if they decide to give more time to their bench players, they will still be able to accomplish this goal.

Denis’ College Basketball Pick: Baylor -38.5 (-110)

Noah Dunlap

In yet another absolute mismatch on a mediocre night of college basketball action, we get the top ranked Baylor Bears getting ready to absolutely demolish the Demons of Northwestern State. This game would be bad enough if it were Northwestern, as I’d still take Baylor big, but instead it’s Northwestern State, who comes in at 3-10, with two losses to ranked teams on the year, a 41 point loss to Houston and a 40 point L to LSU.

They also have a 47 point loss to SMU on their resume, which doesn’t lead me to believe they’re going to give a better effort against the best team in the country. I’m not going to bother giving much of a breakdown for Baylor here, other than to say that they’re the defending champions, and now enter this one as one of the only remaining undefeated teams left in basketball at 11-0. Take Baylor and the points here, as I’m not sure I’ll be able to count as high as the margin of victory ends up being in this one.

Noah’s College Basketball Pick: Baylor -38.5 (-110)

Tony Battalio

Northwestern State is coming into this game with a record of 3-10 on the year, as they have looked horrible through their first 13 games of the season. In their two games against ranked opponents this season they are 0-2 and have lost by a combined total of 81 points to the Houston Cougars and LSU Tigers. Now they will play their toughest opponent of the season on Tuesday night when they meet the number one overall ranked team the Baylor Bears. They will need to play a perfect game of basketball if they want any chance of knocking off Baylor.

The previously mentioned Baylor Bears are coming into this one, as the top team in the nation up until this point and undefeated with a record of 11-0 on the season. Baylor has won 9 of their 11 games by 10 or more points and that will likely increase to 10 of 12 after this one. As I have the Baylor Bears picking up the victory at home in blowout fashion and covering the spread in the process. It will be a perfect last tune up game for them as they prepare to head into Big 12 Conference play.

Tony’s College Basketball Pick: Baylor (-100000)

Incarnate Word @ #17 Texas – 8:30pm ET

Denis Kirilov

Texas will try to continue their good run against unseeded teams this year. The Longhorns are 9-2 so far with two losses coming against Gonzaga and Seton Hall. Many would think that the game against the Pirates was a surprise, but they surely built a competitive team that might upset more teams from top 10. Texas might be underperforming so far in a way that they are quite conservative without showing off their real potential in games against low-tier opponents. They rarely go beyond the 80-point mark which is concerning for a team of their calibre. However, I will give it to the lack of fast break points. Timmy Allen and Marcus Carr lead the way for the Longhorns and I strongly believe they will become an even better duo in the second part of the season.

Incarnate Word might be a 2-10 team this year, but they played quite well against two of the best teams in the NCAA. First, they lost by just 27 points to Baylor which is an achievement in my opinion. In their last game prior to this fixture, they faced off Purdue who are a top 3 team and lost by 20 points. Johnny Hughes III and RJ Glasper lead the way for Incarnate Word as they have attempted almost half of the shots for the team. The only thing that keeps them going is their decent performance from the 3-point line. Apart from that, Incarnate Word is just 43.6% from the field which is far from a competitive number. However, I think that they will continue doing a great job against seeded teams and once again cover the spread.

Denis’ College Basketball Pick: Incarnate Word +34.5 (-110)

Noah Dunlap

Texas comes in as a consistent top-20 team this year, as they hovered around the 16-17 mark for the past 3-4 weeks. They’re a decent team, as they come in at 9-2, but the schedule has been somewhat favorable, with the two quality opponents they’ve faced, Gonzaga and Seton Hall, having both knocked off the Longhorns.

Now they take on Incarnate Word, who is just bad, to put it mildly. The Cardinals come into this one at 2-10, and are a team whose resume to this point features losses such as a 33 point loss to Abilene Christian, a 30 point loss to Rice, and multiple 20+ point losses as well. While I’m not totally sold on Texas being a legitimate contender this year, especially as conference play starts in the Big 12, I think they are just so much better than this UIW squad, that I think the play is to take Texas and the points.

Noah’s College Basketball Pick: Texas -34.5 (-100)

Tony Battalio

The Texas Longhorns are 9-2 on the year coming into this game. They are nationally ranked at number 17 in the country and will be looking to break into the top 15 before heading into Big Twelve conference play full time starting next week. They are currently on a three game winning streak heading into this one, as they followed up their loss to Seton Hall with wins over Arkansas Pine Bluff, Stanford, and Alabama State, they scored over 60 in each one of those three games.

Incarnate Word comes into this game with a record of 2-10 on the year as they have struggled all season long. They have already played two top 25 opponents this season and they were decimated in both games by the Purdue Boilermakers and Baylor Bears, by a combined 47 points. Now this game against the Texas Longhorns will be their third chance to knock off a top 25 school. However I don’t see that happening as I have the Longhorns picking up the win at home in this one.

Tony’s College Basketball Pick: Texas (-50000)
