SC State @ #2 Duke – 8pm ET
South Carolina State will travel north to play Duke at Coach K Court. SC State is 3-7 coming into this one. This is a game that is by far their toughest test of the year as they face off against the 7-1 Duke Blue Devils. Duke comes into this game ranked second in the country.
SC State will face a seeded team for the first time this season in the face of #2 Duke. The team has been playing really well despite having only 3 wins out of 10 games. The Bulldogs fought well against much better teams in the likes of Citadel, Lipscomb, and East Carolina. However, they suffered an upset to Loyola Maryland, but their most recent victories over South Florida and High Point might have turned the tables once again. They rely much on depth and balance within the roster as their top-scorer has been able to average just 11.5 points per game.
Duke, on the other hand, has proved to us that they will be a tough contender this year. They went for a 7-0 start to the season, but a loss against Ohio State put an end to their streak. The Blue Devils haven’t played a single match after the final day of November and this might get the better of them. They will certainly try to make up for this surprising loss that occurred mainly due to their inability to drain clutch shots in the decisive moments of the game. However, I think this long break will have a negative impact on the team led by Mike Krzyzewski and they won’t be able to cover the spread.
Denis’ College Basketball Pick: SC State Covers +36.5 (-110)
Despite having collapsed late to Ohio State, Duke is still one of the best teams in the country, as they come into this one ranked second, with the loss to OSU as their only slip-up of the year. Led by freshman Paulo Banchero and junior Wendell Moore Jr., this Blue Devils team looks like one that could make a deep run in the tournament this year, in Coach I’d last season at the helm.

They get a South Carolina State team in this one that just isn’t very good, despite entering on a two-game winning streak. There are some games that regardless of heart and effort a team just doesn’t have the talent to compete, and that’s what this game is for SCSU. Duke wins easily at home.
Noah’s College Basketball Pick: Duke (-50000)
Duke comes into this game with a record of 7-1 on the year. They are nationally ranked as the second best team in the country as well. They will be looking to rebound from a loss to Ohio State in their last game. They already have a resume defining win over Gonzaga as well. They will be looking to use this game and a few others as one final tune up before getting into ACC play.
The South Carolina State Bulldogs are not having the greatest start to the season. They come into this game with Duke sporting a record of 3-7 on the year. However they do come into this game on a two game winning streak after picking up wins over South Florida and High Point, to open up the month of December. They will need to play a nearly perfect game to pick up a huge upset win on the road in this one. However I don’t see that being the case as I have the Duke Blue Devils winning this one with ease.
Tony’s College Basketball Pick: Duke (-50000)
Louisiana @ #14 Houston – 8pm ET
Louisiana picked up a loss in their last game as they fell to Louisiana Tech. While the Houston Cougars also lost in controversial fashion to the Alabama Crimson Tide. Now they will both meet and look to get back into the winners column against each other.
Louisiana and Houston will face each other on Tuesday in the NCAA. The Cougars have suffered yet another narrow loss in their last game. They lost to Alabama as a late dunk by JD Davison got the lead for the Crimson Tide. With this loss Houston is now on an 8-2 record, still standing in 1st place in the American Athletic Conference. Marcus Sasser is their main player, but his 25 points weren’t enough against Alabama. He averages 18.4 points per game, while his quickness and sharp movement on the court led him to a total of 24 steals for 10 games.
Louisiana, on the other hand, are 5-4, as they come into this game after a tough loss to Louisiana Tech in their last meeting, 78:69. Although they have a positive win-rate, they are underperforming so far. The Ragin’ Cajuns lost 75:70 to Jackson State a couple of weeks ago in a game where Lafayette were 13-point favorites. The team has been struggling from the field, scoring just 41% of their attempts. They have gone for 65% from the free-throw line and average 16 turnovers per game. In my opinion, Houston are huge favorites to win this one and I also think they will be able to cover their spread. Having in mind Louisiana’s clumsy performance so far, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Cougars win by more than 30 points.
Denis’ College Basketball Pick: Houston -23.5 (-110)
Look for Houston to get back on the winning track in this one after dropping their last outing on the road to a good Alabama team (more on them later). The Cougars come in ranked 14th in the country, with an 8-2 record, and the only losses were to Alabama and Wisconsin, which are both quality losses. They’re yet to lose to a team they were supposed to beat, which is a good sign for the Cougs moving forward.
As for Louisiana, they’ve been mediocre at best this season, as they sit at 5-4, but of those four losses, a few have been inexcusable, including a loss to Jackson State earlier in the year. In all honesty, I don’t see how a team that fell to Jackson State and Marshall are going to get it together and take down a top-15 Houston team on the road. Give me the Cougars to take care of business easily in this one.
Noah’s College Basketball Pick: Houston (-10000)
The Houston Cougars come into this game with a record of 8-2 on the season. They are nationally ranked inside the top 25 at #14 in the country. Both of their losses this season have come to top teams like Alabama and Wisconsin. They will be looking to rebound quickly after their one-point, heartbreaking loss to Alabama in their last game.
Louisiana comes into this game with a record of 5-4 on the year as they have been trading wins and losses all season long. They have yet to establish any type of momentum and now they will have a much tougher task ahead of them. In this one they will have to play a top 25 Houston team that is sure to be more motivated than ever following their loss to Alabama. I think the outcome of the last game will directly influence this one as I look for Houston to pick up the win in blowout fashion.
Tony’s College Basketball Pick: Houston (-10000)
Arkansas State @ #25 Texas Tech – 8pm ET
Arkansas State is 7-2 on the season, and currently has a four-game winning streak going into this game. Texas Tech is 7-1 on the year and ranked just inside the top 25 at number 25. This game has the potential to be the best one of the night as a top team from the Sun Belt meets a top team from the Big 12.
Arkansas State is on a very surprising 7-2 run so far during this campaign as they travel to Texas to play the 25th-seeded, Texas Tech. The Red Wolves are on a 4-game winning streak and they will try to make a huge upset against their more renowned opponent on Tuesday. Arkansas State defeated Kansas City, Central Arkansas, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, and Mississippi Valley State in their last matches, but as the first team seemed to be the toughest competitor.
Texas Tech is looking at a 7-1 start to their season which puts them in 6th place in the Big 12 Conference. The team lost to Providence in the beginning of December which stopped their wonderful momentum. Later on, they managed to outsmart #13 Tennessee after overtime, 57:52. Terrence Shannon Jr., Kevin McCullar, and Mylik Wilson are the driving forces of the team as they are looking to improve from last year’s 1/16 finals. Focusing on this particular game, I think that Texas Tech is the better team, but they will find it really hard to cover such a huge spread. My preference goes towards Arkansas State as they have a lot to fight for and they won’t lose by such a huge margin.
Denis’ College Basketball Pick: Arkansas State +24.5 (-110)
This is a matchup that looks really good based on the record, but I’m not convinced it ends up being as close as the records suggest. Arkansas State comes in at 7-2, but it’s against an absolutely miserable schedule, and now they get their first real matchup against a quality team, and it’s not something I think they’re ready for.
No place like home 🏠
— Texas Tech Basketball (@TexasTechMBB) December 12, 2021
With Texas Tech, they enter at 7-1, even with losing head coach Chris Beard to Texas this offseason. They still play an aggressive style of defensive-minded basketball, which is a large reason for them having a win over Tennessee, and the offense, while certainly not great, I think is efficient enough against a mediocre Red Wolves team to allow them to get a win and probably able to take the points in this one as well.
Noah’s College Basketball Pick: Texas Tech -24.5 (-110)
The Texas Tech Red Raiders come into this game with a record of 7-1 on the year. They went undefeated throughout the month of November with a 5-0 record before falling to the Providence Friars to open up in December. They rebounded in a big way with a top 25 win over Tennessee in the Jimmy V Classic in overtime in their last game. They will be looking to add to their momentum-building win, with another victory here.
The Arkansas State Red Wolves are having a great season so far as through nine games they possess a record of 7-2. They are currently riding high on a four game winning streak as they prepare for another tough test this year, this time against Texas Tech. The last power five team they played was Illinois, the Fighting Illini picked up a blowout win in that game. I look for more of the same result in this one as I look for the Red Raiders to get the win easily at home.
Tony’s College Basketball Pick: Texas Tech -24.5 (-110)
#6 Alabama @ Memphis – 9pm ET
Bama comes in off a huge win over the Houston Cougars. Now they will face their second straight American Athletic Conference team. As they come into this game 8-1 on the year. The Memphis Tigers are 5-4, but don’t let the record distract you they are still a very good team.
After two remarkable victories in their last matches over Gonzaga and Houston, the Alabama Crimson Tide rose to #6 in the rankings list. They have been performing on a very high level from the start of the season as they have only lost to Iona in a narrow game. The team is 4th in the Southeastern Conference with an 8-1 record, right behind Auburn, Arkansas, and LSU. Jaden Shackleford led his team in the victory over Gonzaga with 28 points and 9 rebounds. Later on, he dropped 18 points and 8 rebounds in their next meeting with Houston. He is, without a doubt, the leader of the Crimson Tide who can also rely on players like Jahvon Quinerly and Keon Ellis.
Memphis has started the season in a very high mood with 5 consecutive victories. However, they entered something like a mini-crisis as they lost 4 games in a row prior to this match. The Tigers suffered three huge upsets, getting defeated by Iowa State, Georgia, and Murray State. They surely deserve better, but this recent performance by their players and the inability of Emoni Bates to carry his team have put them in 8th place in the American Athletic Conference. Their freshman center, Jalen Duren, has been playing on a very high level and might be the game-changer against Alabama. I think that it’s high-time we saw what Memphis is capable of. They will surely want to show the world of basketball that this 0-4 record from their most recent games happened by accident. I will go with the Tigers in this one.
Denis’ College Basketball Pick: Memphis (+146)
Alabama comes into this one looking like one of the best teams in the country so far this year, as they already have wins over Gonzaga and Houston, and their only loss comes to a Rick Pitino-coached Iona team in a game that their shots just weren’t falling. With the Tide, the key to their success is the three ball falling, as they’re absolutely an outside-in team that relies heavily on success from the perimeter.
And as for Memphis, living in the Memphis area, I can safely say that head coach Penny Hardaway is absolutely on the hot seat. The recruiting classes he’s able to bring in are almost certain to be top-10 virtually every year, just because of his personality and character, but eventually, the coaching has to be there too, and currently, we’ve seen nothing of the sort for this Tiger team. Emoni Bates and Jalen Duren, while both are top-2 players in their class, are both early enrollees that should typically be high school seniors, which explains some of the shaky play from them, but the biggest issue is the lack of a point guard. Without a real point guard with size, Memphis is going to struggle to slow down a really good Bama perimeter attack, which is why I’m leaning heavily on Alabama for this one.
Noah’s College Basketball Pick: Alabama -3.5 (-114)
The Alabama Crimson Tide are coming off an emotionally fueled victory over Houston in a game that ended in controversy. How they will look to pick up their second straight win over an AAC team against a competitive Memphis Tigers team led by former NBA great Penny Hardaway. They will also be going for their fifth straight win since being upset by Iona. As far as their resume is concerned if the year ended today they would be in the tournament as they hold a win over Gonzaga as well.
The Memphis Tigers are much better than their record shows. However they are 5-4 coming into this game as they have hit a rough patch. They will be looking to break a four game losing streak that started in November as they lost their final game of the month as they have gone 0-3 this month as well. However I don’t see that happening against Alabama, the way Alabama has been playing lately has led me to think they will pick up another big win on the road in this game.
Tony’s College Basketball Pick: Alabama (-176)
Arkansas Pine Bluff @ #17 Texas – 9pm ET
Arkansas Pine Bluff is having a rough year as they have only managed to win one game in their first eleven games played to date. It won’t get any easier for them as they have to travel to Austin to play the Longhorns. Texas comes into this game with a record of 6-2 on the year.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff are off to an awful start this season, winning just 1 out of 11 games played. Their sole victory came against Arkansas Baptist who came really close to beating them. In the rest of their matches, the Golden Lions have been quite the underdog as they had to face teams like Baylor and Iowa State. Arkansas-Pine Bluff have had plenty of troubles in defensive positions, losing to the reigning champions by 45 points.
Texas, on the other hand, suffered a drop from being 6th to being #17 in the current rankings. They are holding onto a 6-2 record which gives them the 8th place out of 10 teams in the Big 12 Conference. The Longhorns are coming into this game after a tough 64:60 loss to the high-flying Seton Hall. Timmy Allen has been underperforming recently for Texas as Tre Mitchell took the matters in his own hands in their last two matches. Courtney Ramey, Marcus Carr, and Andrew Jones are even more people for Arkansas-Pine Bluff to deal with. I don’t see how they will avoid a loss by a huge margin, so I will go with Texas covering their spread, although it seems to be quite a large one at first sight.
Denis’ College Basketball Pick: Texas -33.5 (-115)
I’m not sure how much of a summary we need for this one. Arkansas Pine-Bluff comes in at 1-10 on the year, and while a few of those losses have been to solid competition, many of those losses have been against competition that you simply can’t lose to if you think you have the ability to stay on the floor with a top-20 Texas team, especially one that looks as if they have the talent under new coach Chris Beard to make a deep run in this year’s tournament.
— Ticket Office: 512-471-3333 (@TexasMBB) December 11, 2021
That Texas team comes in at 6-2, but both losses are to quality competition, as they dropped a game earlier this year to Gonzaga, who was ranked number one at the time, and then fell in a tight one in their last outing to a Seton Hall team that I think has the potential to sneak up on a lot of teams this year. UAPB may eventually get the ship righted at some point this season, but it won’t be here, as they simply don’t have the talent or size to hang with Texas for a full 40 minutes. Take the Longhorns big at home.
Noah’s College Basketball Pick: Texas -33.5 (-115)
Arkansas Pine-Bluff is 1-10 so far this season. Now they will face what is yet another tough opponent just like they have all year as they travel to Austin to play the Texas Longhorns. They have already lost to a couple of ranked Big 12 teams this month as they have been beaten by Iowa State and Baylor. They broke a long losing streak at the end of November but quickly went back to their losing ways as they are 0-3 in December.
The Texas Longhorns are having a great season thus far. They come into this game with a record of 6-2 on the year. They will be looking to bounce back after a loss to Seton Hall in their last game. I expect them to do just that, as I have the Texas Longhorns winning this game with ease at home.
Tony’s College Basketball Pick: Texas -33.5 (-115)
