#24 UConn @ St. John’s – 12pm ET

Both of these storied Big East times are coming into this game on a one game losing streak. Despite the losing streaks they are having two very different seasons as well. As UConn seems like a lock for the tournament and the Johnnies look underwhelming at best as they get ready to lock up in this one.

Marko Nadin

The St. John’s Red Storm are 8th in the Big East with a 13-10 record including 10-5 at home. After two wins against Georgetown and Butler, they lost 75-69 to Villanova. The Red Storm are one of the worst teams in the nation with 66.4% shooting from the free throw line which ranks them 324th. They are ranked beyond 300 in points allowed with 74.3,  rebounds allowed with 35.4 per game, and three-point percentage allowed with 36.5%. St. John’s has covered the spread in 5 of the last 6 games. Their best player Julian Champaigne who is averaging 18.5 points per game will not play against UConn.

The UConn Huskies are third in the Big East with a 16-7 record. After winning five straight games, the Huskies have lost 3 of the last 4. They are coming off a 74-68 loss to Xavier. The Huskies rank 42nd in the nation with 77.6 points per game and 9th with 37.7 rebounds per game. The Huskies have played over the total points margin in 5 of the last 6 games against a team with a winning record. UConn has won 6 of the last 10 games against St. John’s, the last one in January 86-78 in overtime.

Marko’s College Basketball Pick: UConn (-170)

Tony Battalio

The UConn Huskies come into this game ranked 24th in the nation. The Huskies are currently 16-7 on the season and have built up an impressive resume as tournament time is quickly approaching. Although, it still feels like they are missing a few more wins or one big marque win. That big win won’t come against this lackluster St. John’s team so they will have to wait for that, but they can still increase their win total with a road victory in this one. UConn is on a one game losing streak after losing to Xavier in their last game on the road by a score of 74-68.

The St. John’s Red Storm are coming into this game with a record of 13-10 on the season. The Red Storm have been somewhat underwhelming compared to the rest of the Big East so far this season. As of right now their only hope at making the NCAA Tournament is by winning the Big East Conference Tournament unless they start stringing a bunch of victories together late in the regular season. St. John’s is also coming off of a loss in their last game after falling to the Villanova Wildcats at home by a score of 75-69. As for the result of this one, I have St. John’s losing a second straight game, this time to the Huskies at home.

Tony’s College Basketball Pick: UConn (-170)

Maryland @ #3 Purdue – 1pm ET

The Maryland Terrapins come into this one on an underwhelming run as of late as they have lost four games in a row. Meanwhile, Purdue will be looking to recover from a blowout loss against Michigan. As both teams will be looking to get back on track with a big win.

Marko Nadin

The Purdue Boilermakers are second in the Big 10 with a 21-4 record including 13-1 at home. After six consecutive wins, they lost 82-58 against Michigan in their last game. The Boilermakers committed 14 turnovers and shot only 22% from the three-point line against the Wolverines. Purdue is fifth in the nation with 83.4 points per game and ranks third with 50.5% from the field and 40.5% from the three-point line. Purdue has covered the spread in 6 of the last 7 games against a team with a losing record. Purdue has won 6 of the last 10 games against Maryland.

The Maryland Terrapins are 12th in the Big 19 with an 11-13 record. They have lost the last 4 games, most recently 110-87 against Iowa. Maryland is scoring 70.4 points per game with 42.7% shooting from the field and 32.9% from the three-point line and in none of these categories is ranked among the top 200 teams in the nation. The Terrapins have played under the total points margin in the last 4 games following a 20+ points loss. Maryland won the last game against Purdue 61-60 less than two weeks ago.

Marko’s College Basketball Pick: Purdue (-2300)

The Maryland Terrapins have seemingly been put through the gauntlet scheduling wise as of late. In their last five games, they have played some top tier competition like Iowa, Ohio State, Indiana, and Michigan State. This is why they are currently on a four game losing streak, and now they will have to deal with potentially their toughest test yet when they hit the road to West Lafayette to play the Purdue Boilermakers. Pending a miracle run to the Big Ten Conference Tournament Championship, Maryland will likely be sitting at home during March Madness. As their 3-10 record inside of the Big Ten has been a disappointment.

The previously mentioned Purdue Boilermakers come into this game ranked as the 3rd best team in the sport of college basketball. They are currently 21-4 on the season and likely a lock for the NCAA Tournament at this point. They can establish themselves as a number one seed, and potentially the number one overall seed with a strong finish to the season. Purdue comes into this game on a one game losing streak after being blown out in their last game against Michigan, which is something they will have to recover from quickly to avoid losing more momentum. As for the result of this one, I have Purdue beating Maryland at home.

Tony’s College Basketball Pick: Purdue -16 (-110)

Northwestern @ #13 Illinois – 2pm ET

In the second featured Big Ten clash of the afternoon, the Northwestern Wildcats are taking on the Illinois Fighting Illini on the road. Northwestern will be looking to continue their winning streak while Illinois will be looking to increase their lead in the conference.

Marko Nadin

The Illinois Fighting Illini are on top of the Big 10 with a 17-6 record. After 4 consecutive wins, Illinois lost 84-68 to Purdue in their last game. Illinois ranks among the top 50 teams in the nation in three-point shooting percentage with 36.7%. They are 32nd in the nation allowing 40.1% from the field. Illinois hasn’t covered the spread in their last 7 Sunday games. They have played over the total points margin in 8 of the last 11 games. They have won the last 7 games against Northwestern, most recently 59-56 in January.

The Northwestern Wildcats are 10th in the Big 10 with a 12-10 record. Following 4 straight losses, Northwestern has won the last three games against Rutgers, Nebraska, and Indiana. The Wildcats score 75.1 points per game and allow 67.8. Northwestern has covered the spread in 4 of their last 5 games but hasn’t done so in their last 4 Sunday games. They have played under the total points margin in 6 of the last 8 games against a team with a winning record.

Marko’s College Basketball Pick: Illinois (-530)

Tony Battalio

The Northwestern Wildcats are coming into this game with a record of 12-10 on the season. They have a few big resume worthy wins already this season, but they certainly have not done enough to be a serious contender for a berth in the NCAA Tournament. The Wildcats come into this game on a three game winning streak, however, after picking up wins against Indiana, Nebraska, and Rutgers. Now they will be looking to make it four straight victories with a big win on the road in this one.

The Illinois Fighting Illini come into this game ranked 13th in the nation. Led by Kofi Cockburn, a lot of people consider Illinois as a potential national championship contender this season. However, to some, it is clear that Illinois has plenty of weaknesses to work out as well. They come into this game with a record of 17-6 on the season. The Fighting Illini are also 10-3 inside of the Big Ten conference which is good enough for first place as well. As for the result of this game I have Illinois adding another victory with a win at home in this one.

Tony’s College Basketball Pick: Illinois (-530)
