The No. 13 Xavier Musketeers (17-4, 9-1 Big East), one of the NCAA’s top scoring teams, are on the road to face the Creighton Bluejays (12-8, 6-3 Big East) on Saturday.
Xavier squeaked by the UConn Huskies 82-79 at Harry A. Gampel Pavilion on Wednesday. Souley Boum was the key player with 21 points. The Musketeers remain first in the Big East Conference.
Creighton won their third in a row in impressive fashion on Wednesday at CHI Health Center Omaha, beating the St. John’s Red Storm 104-76. Baylor Scheierman had 17 points, 10 rebounds, and six assists to lead the team.
The Bluejays remain fourth in the Big East Conference. It’s the final meeting of the season between the teams. Xavier will be aiming for a season sweep against Creighton after winning the only earlier meeting 90-87 at Cintas Center on January 11, their fourth straight head-to-head victory. Boum led the Musketeers with 26 points and eight assists. Scheierman had 25 points in defeat.
Boum (16.8 ppg), Zach Freemantle (15.1), and Jack Nunge (14.3) are leading the Musketeers in scoring this season. Freemantle also has grabbed 8.3 rebounds per game, while Boum has dished 5.0 assists per game. Scheierman (13.5 ppg), Trey Alexander (13.0), and Ryan Kalkbrenner (12.8) have been the primary providers for the Bluejays on offense. Scheierman also has collected 8.6 rebounds per game.
Meanwhile, Ryan Nembhard has distributed 5.3 assists per game. The Musketeers are averaging 84.0 points per game, ranking as one of the highest-scoring offenses in the nation (8th).
Xavier is 9-1 in the last 10 games with an average margin of +6.1 (84.9-78.8). Creighton has gone 6-4 over the last 10, scoring 76.7 points per game on average while holding opponents to 67.8 (+8.9 margin).
